NCCU Football Announces 19 New Eagles in Signing Class

DURHAM, North Carolina – North Carolina Central University head football coach Jerry Mack announced 19 new Eagles on Wednesday as part of a 2016 signing class that will bolster NCCU's run at a third consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship.

"This is a very solid signing class," said Mack, entering his third season at NCCU. "We managed to build depth and add transfers and some freshmen that we feel can help us immediately to make that push for a third championship."

NCCU's signing class consists of 11 incoming freshmen and eight transfers. The Eagles added four defensive backs, more than any other position, to fill a void in the backfield. The newcomers also include three wide receivers, two offensive linemen, two defensive linemen and two tight ends, along with a linebacker, running back, quarterback, long snapper, kicker and an athlete.

"We lost some quality defensive backs in C.J. Moore, Ryan Smith and Theo Livingston, so we had to replace them with some solid players in the secondary," said Mack.

Mack and his staff continue to make the state of North Carolina a priority in their recruiting efforts. In each of the three signing classes under Mack, at least 42 percent of the signees are Tar Heels, including eight of the 19 this year.

NCCU opens the 2016 football season on Sept. 3 at Duke University in the Bull City Gridiron Classic inside Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham.

Shoalin McGuire, QB, 6-3, 205, Ridgeway, Va./Magna Vista HS- Led Magna Vista High School to back-to-back Virginia 3-A state championships with a combined record of 27-3 (14-1 in 2014, 13-2 in 2015). As a junior in 2014, named All-Group 3-A West Offensive Player of the Year and 3-A All-State Second Team. UAPB Announces 2016 Football Signees

PRINE BLUFF, Arkansas -- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Football team announced its 2016 football signees today, a roster of 15 signees that includes five defensive lineman, two kickers, one linebacker, two offensive lineman, three wide receivers, one tight end, and one athlete.

"This year's recruiting class was online on to what we were looking for," said Head Coach Monte Coleman.

"We were able to sign a group of young men that will make a big impact on this upcoming football season as we signed linebackers, tight ends, skills position player, athletes and wide receivers," Coleman added.

Advance tickets available for Crosstown Classic

NEW ORLEANS — The energy, enthusiasm and competitiveness synonymous with New Orleans' longest-running college basketball rivalry will return Saturday (Feb. 6) when Xavier University of Louisiana and Dillard University meet in the Crosstown Classic at the XU Convocation Center. Tickets are on sale now.
    
The women's game will start at 3 p.m., followed by the men's game at 5 p.m.

Curtis standout Lacee Ancar signs with Xavier Gold Nuggets

NEW ORLEANS — Lacee Ancar of Harvey, La., and John Curtis Christian School signed a women's tennis scholarship Wednesday with Xavier University of Louisiana.
    
Ancar is a 3-star recruit rated No. 1 in Louisiana, No. 36 in the Gulf States region and No. 289 nationally by tennisrecruiting.net. She has won approximately 20 singles and doubles championships combined during her career in juniors. At Curtis she was a Division III state singles semifinalist in 2015 and the runner-up in 2014.
 
"I have known Lacee since she was 12 years old and have followed her career," XU coach Alan Green said. "Lacee will be a big boost to our team, not only because she's a very good player, but also because she's a great leader. I look for her to come in and lead as soon as she gets on campus."
    
Ancar will graduate from Curtis in the spring and be an XU freshman in August. She will be a biology/pre-medical major, and she hopes to become an anesthesiologist.
    
"Xavier was the best all-around fit for me," Ancar said. "It has a great record of placing African-Americans into medical school. Xavier has a great tennis program. I'm honored to be a part of it."
    
Xavier is a long-time power in women's tennis, qualifying for the NAIA National Championship each of the last four years and nine times in the past 11 seasons. The Gold Nuggets were ranked No. 1 in the NAIA coaches poll for three weeks in 2013 and two weeks in 2014, and both teams were national semifinalists. Xavier is ranked 11th this season.

Tennessee State Football Releases 2016 Schedule

NASHVILLE, Tennessee -- Tennessee State football has announced the schedule for the 2016 season. The slate will consist of four home games, including the 18th annual John Merritt Classic, six road games and a trip to Memphis for the 27th Southern Heritage Classic.

The season kicks off with the Tigers hosting Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Nissan Stadium for the John Merritt Classic on Sept. 3. The Lions last visited TSU in 2012, a 40-13 homecoming win for the Big Blue.

The annual meeting with Jackson State in Memphis on Sept. 10 follows the season opener. TSU is currently on a four game win streak against the Tigers.

The Big Blue continues its nonconference portion of the season with a trip to Daytona Beach, Fla., to take on Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 17.

TSU will host three Ohio Valley Conference games at home, including UT Martin (Oct. 1), Eastern Kentucky (Oct. 15 – Homecoming) and Tennessee Tech (Nov. 12).

Road Conference games consist of Eastern Illinois (Oct. 8), Murray State (Oct. 29), Austin Peay (Nov. 5) and Southeast Missouri (Nov. 19).

On Oct. 22, the Tigers will step out of conference play to head across town to take on Vanderbilt. It is the first of two scheduled games against the Commodores over the next three seasons.

Locations are still being confirmed and game details are subject to change. Game times will be announced at a later date.

Hampton Football Unveils 2016 Signing Class

HAMPTON, Virginia --  Hampton University head football coach Connell Maynor, who is heading into his third season, announced the Pirates' 2016 signing class, 21 players in all, on Wednesday as part of National Signing Day.

"I thought it was a great recruiting class, our biggest so far. We're looking for a lot of great things out of these guys, we've got a lot of quality players," Maynor said. " We think they can help us out a lot if not next year, then certainly in 2017 and beyond."

Matt Ahearn (6-3, 320, OL, Jacksonville, Fla./Trinity HS): Was on Trinity Christian's undefeated and state championship team this past season, was All-American and All-State.

Noah Boone (6-3, 195, WR, Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown HS): Caught 38 passes for 583 yards and five touchdowns this past season and was a First Team All-Conference 1 (Coastal) selection.

Albert (Ryan) Carlisle III (6-1, 280, C, Opelika, Ala./Opelika HS): Helped Opelika go 11-2 this past season, advancing to the state playoffs. Switched to center as a senior.

Terry Chisley (5-9, 180, CB, Hampton, Va., Bethel HS): Played both wide receiver and defensive back for the Bruins, and he was a Second Team All-Conference 10 selection this past season.

Tarus Dameron (5-10, 220, RB, Lincolnton, N.C./Lincolnton HS): Rushed for 2,304 yards and 27 touchdowns as a senior, leading Lincoln County.

Jordan Edwards (6-1, 220, LB, Forestville, Md./Bishop McNamara HS): Played both linebacker and running back for Bishop McNamara, racking up 75 total tackles as a senior, averaging 7.5 per game.

Tylon Patterson (6-5, 190, WR, Covington, Ga./Lithonia HS): Was a two-sport athlete at Lithonia and will add size to the Pirates' receiving corps.

Mehran Roshanaei (5-10, 170, K/P, Arlington, Va./Yorktown HS): Former soccer player who made seven of his nine field goals in 2015, including a season-long of 47 yards, while also averaging almost 50 yards a punt.

Donald Smith (6-2, 190, CB, Danville, Va./George Washington HS): Two-spot star (football and basketball) in high school, helped the football team go 12-2 this past season.

Steven Smith (6-2, 235, LB, Virginia Beach, Va./San Jose City College/Salem HS): Was an All-Conference performer at San Jose City College, showcasing the ability to both rush the passer and drop into coverage.

Keldrick (K.J.) Wilson (6-5, 285, OL, Mt. Ulla, N.C./West Rowan HS): Has seen most of his playing time at tackle, and was an All-Conference performer. Also played basketball.

NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk State University head football coach Latrell Scott announced the bulk of his 2016 recruiting class on Wednesday, a 15-player group which addresses Scott's goals to improve the Spartans' athleticism, size and versatility.

Three members of the recruiting class are already enrolled at NSU and are taking spring-semester classes: quarterback Tyre-Givers Wilson of Indian River High in Chesapeake, and offensive linemen Jordan Crockett and Kenneth Kirby of Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Va. The other 12 players signed national letters of intent on Wednesday.

Of the 15 players, Scott inked five offensive linemen, two quarterbacks, two wide receivers, two defensive backs, one running back, one defensive lineman and two multi-position athletes. Twelve of the 15 are from the state of Virginia, and 10 are from the immediate seven-city Hampton Roads area. The Spartans also welcome players from the Richmond, Va. area and Washington, D.C., in addition to one prospect each from North Carolina and New Jersey.

"We're thrilled about the 2016 recruiting class," Scott said. "Our aim was to identify and address our areas of need to enhance our roster moving forward. We also achieved our recruiting goal of starting locally, then moving out on a regional and national basis. With the addition of these players, we feel we have laid the foundation for success down the road."

Breaking down TSU's 2016 recruiting class

HOUSTON, Texas -- A look at TSU's 2016 recruiting class:

Class ranking: N/A

Analysis: New head coach Mike Haywood essentially had a few weeks to put together his first recruiting class at TSU since being hired in December. Considering the circumstances, he got everything he needed. The Tigers signed 16 players for 2016. Haywood said restocking the trenches was of high priority and he addressed that with three offensive linemen, a tight end, two defensive tackles and a defensive end.

Top prospect: Cameron Davis, QB, Arkansas Baptist/Madison HS. The Madison product is coming back home as a transfer for a chance to help Texas Southern immediately in 2016. Davis stands at 6-3 and 210 pounds. Haywood said this is one he was especially proud to sign.

 

Best of the rest: Jeremiah Credit, ATH, Brazosport. He's one of the shortest players in this class for TSU, but Haywood believes this speedster can be used in a number of different ways for the Tigers. Expect to see him at receiver. Credit's elusiveness will be useful, too.

Late addition: Julian Marcantel, LB, Hamilton Christian (Lake Charles, La.). It's not just Houston that Haywood wants to lock down. He wants to strengthen recruiting ties to Louisiana, too. Enter Marcantel, who committed four days ago. He is joined along with defensive tackle Micah Minter from Byrd High School in Lake Charles, La. Marcantel played quarterback in high school, too.

One who got away: Davis is into the fold, but Hightower quarterback Neiko Hollins would've been a great get for the Tigers. He instead committed and signed to Prairie View A&M. TSU was hoping to flip him down the stretch.

What coach Mike Haywood had to say: "I think it's an outstanding class. I think the assistant coaches did a tremendous job leading the pathway making sure that we were going on the right course to recruit the right student-athletes to make us a better football team."

 

 

New Stadium, Pair Of FBS Opponents Highlight Prairie View A&M 2016 Football Schedule

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas -- Four home games inside the brand new Panther Stadium, two Football Bowl Subdivision opponents and seven games inside the state of Texas highlights Prairie View A&M's history-making 2016 football schedule.

The 2016 season kicks off on Sept. 3 as history will be made with the opening of the university's brand new football stadium. SWAC rival Texas Southern will be the first opponent in the venue as the Labor Day Classic will be played on the PVAMU campus for the first time ever while TSU will also play on campus for the first time.

One week later on Sept. 10, the Panthers will make history once again as they'll make the short trek up Highway 6 to College Station to face Texas A&M at Kyle Field. The contest marks the first time ever both teams will meet on the gridiron and the first against an opponent from the SEC. Following the contest at Texas A&M, the Panthers will remain on the road for the next two weekends as they'll travel to Alabama A&M (Sept. 17) and Mississippi Valley State (Sept. 24).

The Panthers return to the state of Texas for three of their next four contests as they'll face Grambling State in the annual State Fair Classic in Dallas on Saturday, Oct. 1 inside the historic Cotton Bowl. One week later, the team returns to the friendly confines of Panther Stadium as Alabama State will be its opponent for Homecoming 2016 on Oct. 8. After a bye weekend, the Panthers will make the trip to Houston on Oct. 22 for their second FBS match-up of the season at Rice University as PVAMU has not played inside Rice Stadium since the 1995 season. After the contest at Rice, the Panthers will close out the month of October on the road at Jackson State on Oct. 29.

The month of November features consecutive home games back on campus as Alcorn State travels to Prairie View on Nov. 5 followed by a showdown versus Southern on Nov. 12. The 2016 regular season will conclude on Nov. 19 in Pine Bluff, Ark. as the Panthers will travel to Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Gold Nuggets still 24th in NAIA coaches poll

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana is 24th for the second consecutive week in the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll.
    
The Gold Nuggets, 15-8 after a 75-62 victory Monday at SUNO, have been among the top 25 in all seven polls this season. Their highest rank was ninth Dec. 8.
    
Xavier has one game remaining this week, at 3 p.m. Saturday against Dillard in the Crosstown Classic at XU's Convocation Center.
    
Talladega (18-3), the leader in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference by three games over Xavier and Philander Smith, climbed from 20th to 19th nationally. This is the Lady Tornadoes' fifth consecutive top-25 appearance.
    
Ascending to No. 1 for the first time in the program's history was Our Lady of the Lake, which lost 91-86 in overtime to Xavier Nov. 14 in the LSUS Classic at Shreveport, La. Since then the Saints (19-2) have won 19-of-20, including their last 19 in a row. OLLU received 7-of-9 first-place votes and is the fourth school to hold the top spot this season.
    
XU city rival Loyola, which will play host to the Gold Nuggets at 7 p.m. Feb. 17, fell out of the top 25 after ranking 23rd a week ago.

Howard Bison Football Inks 10 on Signing Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Howard announces the signing of 10 football athletes to National Letters of Intent. The Bison signed three offensive linemen, two wide receivers, two defensive linemen, two defensive backs and a linebacker.

"We still have four or five more that we intend to sign," said Howard head coach Gary Harrell.  "As far as these signees, we've filled some of our most important needs. We have people who can come in and fill our needs, and at the same time change the culture and get back to our winning ways.  It was our goal to get bigger, taller, longer and more athletic and I think we accomplished that."

Harrell continues, "two specific areas that we wanted to address is stopping the run of HOWand establishing the run on offense.  I think we now have the people who can help us in those areas."
