Morton, Big Plays Spark Record-Setting PVAMU Panthers Win

PINE BLUFF, Arkansas  – QB Jalen Morton had a record-setting game in a record-setting night for Prairie View A&M football in a 62-13 win at Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the Southwestern Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

 
Morton accounted for 511 yards and six touchdowns as he set a single-game school record with 255 rushing yards, and tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns. Morton broke John Payton's 64-year old school record of 253 rushing yards set in 1953. It was the fourth time in school history a Panther player rushed for four touchdowns (Ed Price 1952; Payton 1954; Archie Seals 1958).
 
The Panthers (2-3 overall, 1-0 SWAC) set a school record with 815 total yards, breaking the previous mark of 772 yards in a 62-59 double overtime loss at Southern on Sept. 14, 2013.
 
RB Dawonya Tucker, who entered the weekend as the leading rusher in Division I (both FBS and FCS), had his third 100+ yard rushing game of the season with 11 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown.
 
PVAMU exploded for 35 first-quarter points. It took the Panthers only 10 plays to score four touchdowns:

• Morton scored on a career-long 89-yard run on the second play of the game.
• On the next snap from scrimmage following a UAPB field goal, Morton connected with TE Zarrian Holcombe on a career-long 75-yard scoring pass.
• Morton's 37-yard scoring run ended a three-play, 83-yard drive.
• Following a fumble recovery by Jason Dumas, a Morton-to-Markcus Hardy 6-yard scoring pass ended a four-play, 29-yard drive for a 28-3 lead with 6:54 to play in the first quarter.

Caleb Broach's nine-yard scoring run ended a seven-play, 84-yard drive for 35-3 lead after one quarter.
 
Tucker (24 yards) and Morton (1 yard) had scoring runs sandwiched around an Arkansas-Pine Bluff touchdown as the Panthers led 49-10 at halftime.
 
Following a 40-yard punt return by Ju'Anthony Parker, Morton ended a 48-yard drive with his rush into history. His 21-yard scoring run set the school record for rushing yards in a game and tied the school record for rushing touchdowns in a game.
 
In the fourth quarter, Trazon Connley connected with Kaleb O'Bryant on an 88-yard scoring pass for the final Panthers, who had their highest-point total since a 67-12 win over Allen in 1959.

Tuskegee drops home opener to Missouri S&T

TUSKEGEE, Alabama -- Roderick Chapman returned Missouri S&T's opening kickoff back 90 yards for a touchdown and never trailed Tuskegee, who dropped its home opener 16-7 Saturday afternoon at Cleve L. Abbott Memorial Alumni Stadium. It would mark the first home loss since a 45-26 defeat in the NCAA Playoffs from November of 2016 against North Carolina Greenville.

Despite the carer high in receiving yards (166) from Javarrius Cheatham on seven catches and one touchdown, the Golden Tigers were held scoreless for three quarters of the game. The Greenville, Ala native helped chipped away a 10 point deficit when he hauled in a 62 yard touchdown from Ahmad Deramus, which made the score 10-7 with 8:30 left before halftime.

Tuskegee (2-2) was stout on defensive only surrendering 172 yards of total offense and was led by Terance Leatherwood and Davoris Thomas who each earned seven tackles. Leatherwood also added three sacks. Kalil Gray, Ricky Norris and Rorrick Steward chipped in five tackles apiece with Norris registering a sack as well.

Tuskegee's first drive of the second half took up 3:55 seconds occupying 53 yards on eight plays, but stalled in the redzone after a blocked field goal denied the Golden Tigers a chance at tying the game. On TU's ensuing possession, they would again stall in the redzone, this time moving the ball for 69 yards on 13 plays. On 3rd and 1 from the S&T 12 yard line with 6:58 left in the contest, Deramus threw an interception which all but ended Skegee's rally.

Deramus, who was starting only his fourth career game, completed 15 of his 34 passing attempts for 294 yards. Peyton Ramzy caught three passes for 61 yards while teammate Steven Hodges also hauled in three receptions for 61 yards.

The Golden Tigers struggled running the football as no running back earned over 50 yards. Freshman Taurean Taylor led TU on the ground with only 34.

TU returns home to host Lane College in the Hall of Fame game next Saturday at 1 p.m. The game can be seen live on Flo Sports. Live audio coverage will also be available on the Tuskegee Digital Network.

Alcorn Runs All Over MVSU in 56-20 Win

ITTA BENA, Mississippi  – A 665-200 edge in total yards and 462-22 advantage in rushing resulted in a 56-20 victory for the Alcorn State University football program over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday at Rice-Totten Stadium.

Six of Alcorn's (3-1, 1-0 SWAC) seven touchdowns came on the ground as the team won its third straight game. Senior P.J. Simmons tallied a career-high 210 yards and a touchdown, and freshman Marquise Forman registered a career-high 119 yards and two touchdowns.

Junior quarterback Noah Johnson rushed for 139 yards and three touchdowns, and also threw for 203 yards and a score. His top target was junior Chris Blair who hauled in seven catches for 92 yards.

MVSU (0-3, 0-1 SWAC), which was coming off a bye week, was led by Steven McIntosh who posted 80 receiving yards. Quarterback Chris Fowler was limited to 79 yards on 8-for-24 passing and an interception. Defensively, Patrick Harbin had a game-high 11 tackles.

The Braves sacked Fowler five times and backup Dejerric Bryant once. Senior Sterling Shippy wrapped-up 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for a loss. Alcorn also grabbed two interceptions by senior Brady Smith and junior Daylon Burks.

After the team's exchanged punts on their opening drives, the Delta Devils scored on their second series to go up 7-0 at the 9:27 mark. The scoring play was a 4-yard quarterback keeper by Fowler. MVSU was assisted by a 15-yard personal foul call on the Braves after an 18-yard rush by Fowler.

Alcorn got it going after an interception by Smith sparked the team. Smith cut in front of the MVSU wide receiver on a slant route. The turnover resulted in points after Simmons broke loose for a 33-yard touchdown run to the right to tie it 7-7 with 7:33 left in the first. The drive was kept alive after a 14-yard reception by junior Raidarious Anderson, the reigning SWAC Offensive Player of the Week winner, on a 3rd-and-11.

The Braves got the ball back after a three-and-out by the defense, including a sack on third down by junior Kwanzi Jackson. The offense marched down the field again after a 13-yard run by Johnson, followed by a big 46-yard carry by Simmons through the middle. Though, the Braves had to settle for a 20-yard field goal which was good by junior Corey McCullough to put Alcorn up 10-7 with 2:31 remaining in the first.

On the very first play of the second quarter, the Braves had the ball when Johnson sprinted right through the center like a race car with no breaks and outran the entire MVSU defense untouched for a 64-yard touchdown. It gave Alcorn a 17-7 edge.

The Braves were on the move again midway through the second quarter. Johnson completed a 13-yard pass to Blair and a 15-yarder to freshman Juan Anthony. The scoring play was a 10-yard scramble to the left by Johnson as he stretched the ball across the goal line to make it a 24-7 game.

Alcorn got the ball back late in the half with good field position after an interception by Burks. It resulted in a 22-yard field goal by McCullough to increase the advantage to 27-7.

MVSU opened the scoring in the second half with a 90-yard punt return by Booker Chambers for a touchdown which cut the deficit to 27-14 with 10:36 to go. There was originally a flag on the field for a suspected illegal block, but it was picked up.

The Braves responded with a seven-play, 76-yard drive to go back up 34-14 at the 7:58 mark in the third. The scoring play was a run-option as Johnson pitched to Forman for a 15-yard touchdown to the left. The drive included a 20-yard rush by Simmons and a 14-yard reception by senior Charles Hughes.

Alcorn marched down the field again on its next drive, capped by a 6-yard screen pass for a touchdown to Pringle as he carried a defender into the endzone. It ended a seven-play, 70-yard drive which included 13-yard runs by Johnson and Forman. The Braves led 41-14 with 3:03 left in the third.

The Braves extended their edge to 47-14 with 9:43 remaining in the fourth. The scoring play was a 6-yard stretch run to the left by Forman, but the extra point was missed. The series included a 24-yard reception by junior Kyontez Everett on third down, and a 13-yard reception by Blair.

Alcorn added-on with a 50-yard touchdown rush through the middle by Forman. It upped the lead to 54-14 with 6:30 left.

MVSU scored on its final possession of the game. It came on a 3-yard lob pass to Quinn McElfresh. The extra point was blocked by junior Theron Bonds and returned all the way back for two-points by sophomore Qwynnterrio Cole.

Junior Javen Morrison, the reigning HBCU National Player of the Week and SWAC Defensive Player of the Week honoree, finished with five tackles and two pass break-ups.

The Braves will play their second straight conference road game next Saturday at 6 p.m. when they head to Southern. Alcorn is 36-27-2 all-time against SU and beat the Jaguars 48-31 last season at home.

NOTES
- The Braves won their sixth straight game over the Delta Devils and lead the all-time series 45-15-1. Alcorn has outscored MVSU 318-78 over the last six games.

- Alcorn won its conference opener for the seventh year in a row.

- The Braves entered the game as one of 21 teams in the nation to score on 100 percent of their trips in the red zone. Alcorn stayed perfect by going six-for-six tonight.

- Johnson entered the game ranked 13th in the country in completion percentage (.684). He will improve his rank after going 18-for-23 (.783) in the air.

- Simmons, the SWAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, broke his previous career-high of 172 yards set last season against Alabama A&M at home. He averaged 8.8 yards per carry tonight.

- Forman's 119 rushing yards broke his previous career-high of 58 yards against Louisiana College this season. He registered his first multi-touchdown game of his career.

- Alcorn improved to 9-0 when leading at halftime over the last two seasons

- The Braves entered the week ranked No. 4 in the HBCU Poll.

- Alcorn assistant coach Pat White was inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame today. He was not present for his induction as WVU hosted Kansas State since he was on the sideline with the Braves. White's brother Coley was present on his behalf.

- Alcorn's captains were Johnson, Smith and Shippy. The Braves won the coin toss and deferred to the second half.

Most of these penalties are really unnecessary where guys didn't need to do it, but it's something we obviously need to clean up. "Our defense has been stingy the whole year. I didn't like giving up that last touchdown at the very end there when we were on the ball at should have made a play. We also gave up a big special teams touchdown, but the defense has been playing well. We just have to be more consistent offensively and take advantage of our opportunities."

Duke Pulls Away from NCCU in Second Half

DURHAM, North Carolina – North Carolina Central University was within one score of its ACC foe late in the second quarter, but Duke University pulled away from the Eagles after halftime for a 55-13 victory in the seventh edition of the Bull City Gridiron Classic at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Duke started the game off with a quick scoring drive with quarterback Quentin Harris throwing a touchdown pass to Davis Koppenhaver.

On the ensuing kickoff, Duke kicker Collin Wareham kicked and recovered an onside kick. That drive was then capped off by a 15-yard rushing touchdown by Harris making the score 13-0 before an NCCU offensive snap.

Harris threw another touchdown for the Blue Devils, this time to running back Brittain Brown pushing the Duke lead to 20-0 at 6:10 of the first quarter.

NCCU's offense started slowly, but gained momentum with a 10-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a 20-yard touchdown by running back Isaiah Totten.

The Eagles defense also generated some momentum when a Harris fumble was scooped up and returned 55 yards for a touchdown by NCCU defensive back Jordan McRae, trimming the Blue Devils lead to 20-13 with 12:26 remaining in the opening half.

The NCCU defense was stubborn, making fourth down stops on back-to-back Duke drives. Unfortunately for the Eagles, they were not able to turn either stop into points.

Late in the half, Harris connected with Johnathan Lloyd for another Duke touchdown, making the score 27-13 at the intermission.

The second half was all Blue Devils. Duke scored three touchdowns in the third quarter and one in the fourth. The Eagles were unable to find the end zone in the final 30 minutes.

For NCCU, quarterback Naiil Ramadan threw for 51 yards on 6-of-15 passing attempts. Chauncey Caldwell and Dominique Shoffner also took snaps for the Eagles in the second half.

The running game worked well for the Eagles. Totten managed to rush for 88 yards on 12 carries, averaging 7.3 yards per carry with a long run of 59 yards. Tyquan Watson and Jordan Freeman also added a combined 39 yards on the ground for NCCU.

Defensively, the Eagles were led in tackles by Davanta Reynolds with nine. Darius Royster and King Kiaku finished with eight tackles each for NCCU, while Daejon Weeks contributed seven takedowns and forced a fumble.

For Duke, Harris finished the game with 202 yards passing and three touchdowns through the air, along with a rushing touchdown. Chris Katrenick added 54 yards and another touchdown for the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils rushing attack was led by Brown with 118 yards on 13 attempts. Also, Deon Jackson finished the game with 96 yards on 20 carries.

NCCU (1-2) returns home to play Florida A&M next Saturday (Sept. 29) in its first conference game of the season. Duke (4-0) hosts Virginia Tech.

Grambling State Tigers cruise in SWAC opener

GRAMBLING, Louisiana | Malik Route scored on a career-long 79-yard punt return and De'Arius Christmas returned an interception 66 yards as the Grambling State University football team cruised to its first shutout win since 2011 with a 34-0 win over Alabama State on Saturday night at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium.

The Tigers (1-2 overall, 1-0 SWAC) got a 79-yard punt return by Route to give Grambling State a quick 7-0 lead with 10:32 remaining in the opening quarter.

Grambling State extended the lead to 14-0 when Aldon Clark scored on an 11-yard with 5:56 left and on the very next the Alabama State drive, Christmas returned a deflected Darryl Pearson pass 66 yards for a touchdown as the Tigers built a 21-0 advantage through one quarter.

Marc Orozco, who came into the game 44 points shy of becoming the all-time leader in points by a kicker, booted the first of two field goals, a 21-yarder, to extend the lead to 24-0 with 6:39 left in the first half. He connected on a 29-yard field goal with 1:24 remaining in the third quarter to push the margin to 27-0.

LC Football Gets Second Shut Out With With A 30-0 Win Wit)h Lincoln (Pa.)

SALISBURY, North Carolina – Livingstone College got three touchdown passes from Miles Hayes and racked up 263 yards passing while limiting the Lincoln University (Pa.) offense to 101 yards, taking a 30-0 win on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Memorial Stadium.

The Blue Bears (2-1) led Lincoln (0-4), 6-0 after the second quarter thanks to the first touchdown by Hayes, with his 20 yard toss to wide out DeAndre Vickers. The point after touchdown was missed.

In the second quarter, Livingstone went up 13-0 after Hayes connected with Everett Ransom from 50 yard out to make it 13-0 with 5:13 left. The Lions were again forced to punt and Livingstone took advantage of their next drive, starting at the 2:32 mark. With their full complement of timeouts, Livingstone methodically worked their way downfield, setting up a 34-yard field goal attempt from Antoine Akundu that made the score 16-0 at halftime.

Livingstone would go on to score two more touchdowns in the third quarter. In the third, Hayes scored again, with a 17 yard strike to Marcus Baisey. The Blue Bears would cap the scoring at the 5:22 mark when Andrew Faraimo ran in from 14 yards out to provide the 30-0 final.

Justin Ruffin was accounting for 92 rushing yards on nine carries. Hayes was 15-of-29 passing for 208 yards while throwing no interceptions. Ransom, led the LC receiving corps, hauling in five passes for 101 yards.

Defensively, LC's Raheem Coxfield recorded seven tackles on the day with a forced fumble. Armond Cox was second with six also had 12 tackles on the afternoon. Devonte Adams had a great day with two sacks on the day.

The Blue Bears will continue CIAA play on Saturday, Sept. 29, traveling to Richmond, Va. to take on Virginia Union. Kickoff from Panther Stadium is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

UNI Powers Over Hampton 44-0

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI offense dominated from the first possession and the Panther defense followed suit, snagging five turnovers and en route to the first shutout since the 2015 season in a 44-0 win over Hampton (Va.) Saturday at the UNI-Dome.

No. 22/25 UNI closes non-conference play with a 1-2 record. Hampton is also 1-2 on the season.

The Panthers racked up 414 yards of offense and five touchdowns, with three coming in the air and two on the ground.



Eli Dunne was efficient. He was 12-23 for 191 and three touchdowns and no interceptions. Marcus Weymiller and Trevor Allen each had rushing touchdowns, including a 49-yard score from Allen in the second quarter.

Freshman Deion McShane had a breakout game from the slot receiver position. He tallied 117 yards on seven catches. His final reception of the game was a 12-yard circus catch in the end zone that gave UNI a 41-0 lead with 4:10 to play in the third quarter.

Elias Nissen got the scoring going in the first quarter with a 12-yard touchdown catch and Nick Fossey scored on a 19-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter.

Defensively, Xavior Williams, Roosevelt Lawrence, A.J. Allen and Chris Kolarevic all tallied interceptions. UNI picked up one fumble recovery after Blake Thomas forced the loose ball and Isaiah Nimmers picked up the ball to give the Panthers the ball with under a minute to play.

PLAY OF THE GAME
There were a plethora of exciting plays Saturday, but the 49-yard touchdown run by Trevor Allen was the moment when the wind went out of the sails of the Pirates. The play developed slowly as Allen picked his way through the line until a hole opened up. When the gap was there, he was through it and untouched to the end zone.

It was the longest UNI touchdown run since Dec. 5, 2015, when the Panthers Tyvis Smith ran for a 59-yard score to cap off a 29-17 win over Portland State in the FCS Playoffs in Portland. Aaron Bailey also had a pair of touchdown runs over 60 yards in that game.

UP NEXT
The Panthers travel to Indiana State Thursday to open up the season. UNI is 27-5 all-time against the Sycamores and won last year's contest 41-3 in Cedar Falls. ISU is 2-1 on the year and will be coming off of a bye week.

Southern stops Alabama A&M comeback

MOBILE, Alabama — The comeback fell one play short.

With an opportunity to tie the game and force overtime, Aqeel Glass was tackled one yard short of the goal line.

And Southern left Ladd-Peebles Stadium with the first Gulf Coast Challenge trophy.

Southern held off a late Alabama A&M comeback as the Jaguars topped the Bulldogs 29-27 Saturday night to open SWAC play in Mobile.

"It's a tough loss," Alabama A&M coach Connell Maynor said. "Our guys fought hard to give us a chance at the end."

The game was filled with momentum swings.

After watching Southern piece together a touchdown drive on the opening possession, Alabama A&M (1-3, 0-1 in SWAC) responded with 21 unanswered points to take a 15-point lead by the end of the first quarter.

Jordan Bentley ran for a 49-yard touchdown before Aqeel Glass threw a 36-yard touchdown to Kendric Johnson. Glass threw a 17-yard touchdown to Bentley to give the Bulldogs a 21-6 lead.

"We made some plays early," Maynor said. "I like the way our guys responded. But we've got to be able to play four quarters and learn how to finish games."

Southern (2-2, 1-0) rallied back.

After pinning Alabama A&M on its own 1-yard line with a punt, Southern tackled Bentley in the end zone for a safety. A few minutes later, Southern quarterback John Lampley threw an 11-yard touchdown to Devon Benn to pull the Jaguars within 21-15 at halftime.

Southern used two third-quarter touchdowns to take the lead for good.

Lampley finished with 204 passing yards and two touchdowns, and he rushed for 99 yards on 21 carries.

Trailing by eight with less than four minutes remaining in the game, Alabama A&M gave itself a chance on its final possession.

After a couple of big plays from Gary Quarles in the running game, Glass ran two yards for a touchdown, but Southern stopped the Alabama A&M quarterback on the potential game-tying 2-point conversion.

Bentley led Alabama A&M with 96 rushing yards with a touchdown. Glass passed for 210 yards and two touchdowns.

"This is a game we can learn from," Maynor said. "Southern perennially is one of the top teams in our conference, and we proved that we can play with anyone in this league. This loss doesn't define our season. There still are more league games on the schedule, and we've got a shot in our division."

Lincoln Blue Tigers Rush to 28-13 GLVC-Opening Win

JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri -- The Lincoln football team rushed for 178 yards and four scores as the Blue Tigers defeated Southwest Baptist, 28-13, in the GLVC opener for both teams on Saturday night (Sept. 22).

Kimbo Ferguson led the way with 63 yards on the ground, including a pair of one-yard touchdown runs, and also caught a 10-yard pass for a big first down late in the game. Both of Ferguson's scores were set by big catches by Blake Tibbs, who caught four balls for 118 yards.

A 43-yard reception by Tibbs early in the second quarter led to Ferguson's first touchdown and a 7-0 lead by Lincoln, which improved to 2-2 on the season and 1-0 in GLVC play. On LU's ensuing possession, Henry Ogala, who completed 11 passes for 169 yards, found Tibbs for a 35-yard gain down to the one, and Ferguson ran it in on the next play for a 14-0 Blue Tiger lead.

Southwest Baptist (0-3, 0-1 GLVC) scored its lone touchdown of the night on the next drive, connecting on a five-yard pass with just under four minutes to play in the first half to cut the LU lead in half. After forcing SBU into a three-and-out to start the third quarter, Terry Hunter, who had 40 yards on the ground, ran the ball in from two yards out to put the Blue Tigers back up by two scores.

LU scored once more on its next possession, taking a 28-7 lead on a 15-yard quarterback keeper by Ogala with 8:27 to play in the third quarter. Southwest Baptist kicked a pair of field goals from 38-yards and 26-yards, respectively, to stay in the ballgame, but the Lincoln defense used a huge fourth-down stop with 1:28 remaining on the LU 20 to prevent the Bearcats from getting back in the end zone.

The Lincoln defense recorded 11 quarterback hurries and a pair of sacks, and finished with seven tackles for loss as well as five pass break-ups. Victor Williams, Hasan Muhammad-Rogers, Edwin Durassaint and Amani Nelson all finished with seven tackles, while Quan Mason had a sack and Isaiah Gray and Robby Dieujuste assisted on another. JaJuan Chambers had five hurries, and Chavon Gross broke up two passes.

Ogala rushed for 40 yards and Donovan Wright added 17 more on the ground while Antonio Issac added 25 receiving yards. Muhammad-Rogers added 81 all-purpose yards, including 57 on kick returns. Fernando Ramirez averaged 56.0 yards on kickoffs while Wolky Belancourt averaged 35.3 yards in the punting game with a long of 50 yards.

Edward Waters Ground Attack Helps Tigers Win Second Straight Road Game

LEBANON, Tennessee  -- Aided by a strong rushing attack and big defensive plays, Edward Waters (2-2) muscled their way to a 24-17 road victory over Cumberland (2-3) in a Mid-South Conference cross divisional contest at Nokes Lasater Field on Saturday afternoon. The victory helped Edward Waters snap Cumberland's nine-game home winning streak and help the Tigers win back-to-back games for the first time since 2014.

Head Coach Greg Ruffin preached to his team all week long that Saturday's contest would be won up front with the offensive and defensive lines and his charges did not disappoint.

Senior defensive back Kennard Mahone set the tone of the game on Cumberland's opening possession as he knifed his way to QB Dezmon Huntley and came away with a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.



Edward Waters rewarded the great play by drawing first blood with a 27 yard field goal from freshman placekicker Ishmael Sanders, giving the Tigers a 3-0 lead early in the first quarter.

The Purple and Orange extended their advantage to 10-0 late in the first quarter with a four-yard rushing touchdown from freshman running back Jacquez Pelham.

Cumberland cracked the scoreboard midway through the second quarter with a 32-yard rushing touchdown from fullback Telvin Rucker, bringing the Phoenix to within three at 10-7 and the score remained the same going into the locker room.

Both teams went scoreless for a majority of the third quarter, before CU placekicker Sean Kline connected on a 30 yard field goal, tying the score at 10-10 with 1:45 left in the third.

The Tigers retook the lead for good with 10:40 remaining in the fourth quarter as freshman quarterback Derrick Jones found freshman wide receiver Kamaree Noble in the right corner of the endzone for a 23 yard score.

EWC added an insurance score with 4:04 left in the game as Jones took a quarterback keeper into the endzone, giving the Tigers a 24-10 lead.

Cumberland came back with an eight yard touchdown pass to Denarius Tolliver, bringing the Phoenix to within a touchdown but, Edward Waters was able to jump on top of the ensuing on-side kick and was able to run out clockto win their second straight road game.

Edward Waters racked up 240 yards rushing while adding 106 yards through the air. Defensively, the Tigers were able to put the clamps down on CU's vaunted triple-option attack holding the Phoenix to just 144 yards rushing on the day and forced two turnovers.

Freshman running back Corey Hammett led all rushers on the day with 16 carries for 108 yards, his first 100+ yard rushing game of his collegiate career. Fellow freshman ball carrier Jacquez Pelham finished with 12 carries for 51 yards and his first career college touchdown. Derrick Jones finished the day 7-13 passing for 106 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, while also adding 13 carries for 19 yards and a touchdown.

Tyler Gilbert led Edward Waters through the air with two catches for 11 yards, while Kamaree Noble turned in a one catch, 23 yards, one touchdown afternoon for EWC.

Defensively, Kennard Mahone led EWC with six total tackles, including two tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. Jalen Thomas had a great day defensively as well for the Tigers with five total tackles, including one tackle for loss, one sack, one forced fumble, and an interception.

Marauders take down rival Kentucky State, 24-6

FRANKFORT, Kentucky – The Central State Marauders topped rival Kentucky State, 24-6, on Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, the Marauders improve to 2-2 overall with a 1-1 ledger in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). The Thorobreds of KSU fall to 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in the SIAC.

The CSU offense struck first with a 10 play touchdown drive totaling 80 yards. Quarterback Trent Mays capped the drive off with a 17-yard through to receiver Kevin Greenhow to give CSU a 7-0 lead with 2:30 left in the first quarter.

KSU responded on its next drive as quarterback Jules. St. Ge rushed for a 12-yard touchdown to cap of a 7 play drive spanning 56 yards. After a missed extra point, CSU remained ahead by one at the 14:53 mark of the second quarter.

CSU kicker Trevor Teel tacked on three points with a 22-yard field goal on the Marauders next drive. CSU captured all the momentum going into halftime thanks to a 72 yard touchdown pass from Mays to running back Terraris Saffold as time expired.

Up 17-6, the Marauders opened the third quarter with a methodical 19 play, 73-yard scoring drive. CSU ran the ball on 17 of 19 plays as Mays ended the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to put his team up 24-6.

With a healthy lead, the Marauder defense closed out the game by holding the Thorobreds to 66 yards of total offense in the second half.

Saffold put together one of his best games as a Marauder. The 5'11 running back from Hayneville, Alabama carried the ball a career-high 27 times for 131 rushing yards. He also caught five passes for a career-best 124 receiving yards.

Mays finished the afternoon with 188 yards and two scores through the air. He also picked up 17 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Linebacker Kailen Abrams led the Marauder defense with 11 tackles. Shemar Moss led the CSU pass rush with 1.5 sacks.

The Marauders will continue SIAC play against Benedict College next Saturday at 1 pm. The game will be played at Doug Adams Stadium in Xenia, Ohio.

Kennesaw Defense, Special Teams Highlight 70-13 Win Over CAU

KENNESAW, Georgia –  Kennesaw State returned two interceptions for touchdowns and scored on a blocked punt to highlight a 70-13 victory over an outmanned Clark Atlanta team Saturday at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
 
For the second week in a row, the Owls (3-1) broke the program single-game scoring record and established the school mark for largest margin of victory (57 points). Kennesaw State registered a 62-13 victory over Alabama State a week ago to set the previous record.
 
Running back Shaquil Terry led the scoring barrage with three touchdowns, scoring on runs of 21 and 50, and added a five-yard reception from quarterback Chandler Burks. The Owls' quarterback also scored on runs of eight and one yard. Seven Owls scored found the end zone.
   
After Clark Atlanta (0-4) scored 13 points off two Kennesaw State turnovers to take a 13-7 lead less than 10 minutes into the game, the Owls scored 63 unanswered points.
 
Jace White (32 yards) and Demetrius Pettway (56 yards) returned interceptions for touchdowns and Courtney Mills returned a blocked punt by Cole Loden for a score to highlight the play of the defense and special teams. The defense totaled a program record-tying four interceptions.
 
Kyle Glover and Antavius Grier scored their first career touchdowns, finding the end zone on runs of one and 14 yards, respectively.
 
The Kennesaw State offense amassed 351 total yards, including 339 on the ground. Terry led the Owls with 71 yards on three carries.
 
Kennesaw State continues its four-game home stand on Saturday (Sept. 29) when it hosts Samford at 6 p.m.

Campbell Camels blank Shaw 42-0

BUIES CREEK, North Carolina – Campbell scored touchdowns on its first five possessions and went on to defeat Shaw 42-0 Saturday night at Barker-Lane Stadium.

Daniel Smith became CU's all-time passing yards leader (2811) while posting his sixth career 100-yard effort on the ground and the Camels (3-1) held the Division II Bears (1-2) to just 174 yards.

Aaron Blockmon set the school's all-time touchdowns record (22) with a second quarter reception and the Camels held Shaw to 0-of-9 on 3rd-down conversions.



Blockmon finished with 8 receptions for 89 yards, while Whitehead had 5 grabs for 41 yards. Justice Galloway-Velazquez and Terence Harper finished with six tackles apiece for the Camels, who logged their third shutout in the last two seasons.

A sophomore from Leesburg, Va., Smith completed 22 of 28 passes for 227 yards and two scores. He gained an even 100 yards on just five rushes as Campbell finished with a 486-174 advantage in total offense. Joshua Jones added 59 yards and Rocky Reid 52 – plus a pair of TDs – on the ground for the Camels, whose offense was nearly balanced between rushing (244) and passing (242).

Smith scored on a 59 yard quarterback keeper on Campbell's third play from scrimmage. The sophomore signal caller had a 27-yard run on the next possession and Rocky Reid rolled in from seven yards to push the margin to 14-0.

Campbell led 21-0 with 2:11 to play in the opening period after Reid scored from two yards out. Smith's 28-yard completion to Caleb Snead set up the Camels with a first and goal at the two.

Shaw drove 69 yards to the Campbell six yard line on its next possession. However, Monchovia Gaffney deflected Keon Marsh's swing pass and Giddel Waters picked the ball out of the air to extend CU's streak to 30 games with at least one takeaway.

Aaron Blockmon's 12-yard TD reception capped a 10-play, 91-yard drive to push the advantage to 28-0. Smith's one-yard run with 5:06 left in the second provided the Camels with a 35-0 lead at the break.

Smith connected with Antonio Whitehead on a 22-yard TD strike with 3:54 remaining in the third quarter to close out the scoring.

Keon Marsh completed 7-of-14 passes for 68 yards, but was sacked four times. Dorrel McClain gained 104 yards on 10 carries. Jaleel Scroggins led Shaw with 11 tackles.

The Camels return to action next Saturday with a 6 p.m. kickoff against future Big South Conference opponent North Alabama at Barker-Lane Stadium.

Albany State Golden Rams Get First Win in SIAC Opener at Lane

JACKSON, Tennessee -- Albany State opened Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday, Sept. 22 with a 14-7 win at Lane College – the Golden Rams' first win of the season.

ASU benefited from an unsportsmanlike penalty on fourth-and-one late in the first quarter to have new life at the Lane 24. On the next play, Kelias Williams hit a wide-open Mike Green for a 24-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead with 3:38 to play in the opening quarter.

Neither team added points in the second quarter with ASU getting inside the Dragons' 40 once before turning the ball over on downs. It remained 7-0 at the half.

On Lane's first possession of the third quarter, Kieran Strong forced and recovered a fumble at the Lane 45 to give the Golden Rams the ball with a short field. ASU controlled the clock, taking five minutes off over 10 plays. Williams capped the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. Gabrie Ballinas added his second PAT to extend the Golden Rams lead, 14-0, with 5:30 remaining in the third.

The Dragons looked to get on the board early in the fourth quarter, but Vicente Pena's 42-yard field goal try missed wide left. Lane forced a fumble to get the ball back. The turnover led to a Dragon's touchdown on an 18-yard pass from Marcus Reynolds to Omari Hampton. Vicente Pena's kick cut the margin in half, 14-7.

Lane had one last threat late in the game, moving into Albany State territory, but the Golden Rams forced three incomplete passes before Jalen Bush and Roman Victor sacked Reynolds on fourth-and-10 to secure the win with a minute to play.

Albany State was held to 157 yards of offense, while allowing 205 yards to Lane. Williams had 88 yards of offense (20 rushing, 68 passing on 6-of-9 attempts). Tracy Scott and McKin Habersham each had 26 and 24 yards rushing, respectively. Stephon Masha also had time under center, completing 3-of-5 passes for 38 yards.

Reyonds had 150 yards passing for Lane, completing 14-of-30 attempts. Hampton was his main target with 80 yards receiving.

Stephan Pierre led the ASU defense with 10 tackles. Aaron Davis, Terry Compton and Deonte Jackson each had six.

Howard Bison Outlast Bethune-Cookman in MEAC Opener

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana -- In a contest that saw momentum swing back-and-forth, coach Mike London and the Howard University Football team outlasted Bethune-Cookman (B-CU), 41-35, in the 35th annual Circle City Classic in Indianapolis.

With the victory, HU (1-2, 1-0 MEAC) secured its first victory of the season in their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener. Howard also improved to 2-2 all-time in the Circle City Classic.

Howard utilized a balance attack while converting 55-percent (11-of-20) on third and fourth downs.

Overall, the Bison posted 526 total yards (301 passing yards and 225 rushing yards). D.C. native Josiah Crute led the way, rushing for 83 yards on 11 carries, including two TDs. Second-year signal caller Caylin Newton (Atlanta) threw for 301 yards (20-of-32) with two passing touchdowns in the victory.

After watching the Wildcats missed a 40-yard field goal in their opening drive, Howard took their first possession down for a TD, 7-0.

B-CU answered with a 10-play, 86-yard drive, capped off by a 27-yard touchdown pass by Akevious Williams to Steffon Francois, 7-7.

HU responded with another long drive that took four minutes, highlighted by a 13-yard TD pass from Newton to junior wide receiver Kyle Anthony (Miramar, Fla.), 14-7.

Bethune-Cookman closed out the opening period with a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Jimmie Robinson, 14-14.

The second period saw more explosive plays from both squads. Newton connected with junior wideout Jequez Ezzard (College Park, Ga.) for a 36-yard touchdown and gave the Bison a 21-14 advantage.

Moments later, freshman defensive back Jalen Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) returned his first interception for a touchdown and extended HU's lead to double-digits, 28-14.

Robinson kept Bethune-Cookman in the game with a 99-yard kickoff return, followed by 8-yard touchdown pass from Williams. Both squads were deadlocked at 28.

After intermission, Crute dash up-the-middle for a 31-yard TD and put Howard back on top, 35-28.

With time dwindling in the third, freshman Iggy Reynoso (Reading, Pa.) powered his way for his first collegiate touchdown and pushed HU's advantage back to double-digits, 41-28.

Down, but not out, the Wildcats clawed their way back and cut the deficit to a one-possession game after a 15-yard run by Williams, 41-35.

With just over a minute remaining, B-CU was marching down the field for the go-ahead score, but an interception by sophomore defensive back Tye Freeland (Petersburg, Va.) sealed the deal for Howard.

Defensively, Howard held the Wildcats to 33-percent (4-of-12) on third down. Sophomore defensive back Bryan Cook (Cincinnati) had a team-high eight tackles (four solo) while fellow classmate Aaron Motley (Richmond, Va.) added five tackles (four solo), including two tackles-for-loss.

After the bye week (Oct. 6), Howard hits the road to Durham, N.C. where the North Carolina Central Eagles await. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Tennessee State Volleyball Sweeps EIU for 250th Program Win

NASHVILLE, Tennessee -- The Tennessee State volleyball team defeated the Eastern Illinois Panthers 3-0, (25-17, 25-18, 25-17) Saturday afternoon in Kean Hall, marking the 250th win for the program.

The Tigers are now 4-8, 2-0 in Ohio Valley Conference play, while EIU sinks to 5-11, 1-1 in the league.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• JUCO transfer JoJo Kruize had a career match, posting 15 kills and five blocks versus EIU.
• The Tigers outperformed EIU in every stat category, registering 45 kills, 44 assists, seven aces, 65 digs and nine blocks.
• Hinalei Fihaki and Rachel Henderson hit above .400, while Julia Pierson and Kruize hit above .300, combining for a team .274.
• Destiny Washington and Gina Rivera Ortiz held down the backcourt with 13 and 23 digs, respectively.
• TSU held the Panthers to a team .045 hitting percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In an effort to start off fast, the Tigers scored nine unanswered points to begin the first set. A combination of kills from Julia Pierson, Rachel Henderson and JoJo Kruize helped TSU in creating the gap that would push the Tigers to record a match-high 21 kills and 28 digs to go up 1-0 versus the Panthers.  

Eastern Illinois stepped on the floor for set two, determined to put up a fight. With six tied scores and four lead changes, EIU forced TSU to produce.  The Tiger defense rejected five of the Panthers’ attacks, with Kruize leading the way recording three block assists, while the back row dug up 20 balls. Te’o contributed two aces to help TSU win set two, 25-18.

Big Blue closed out the match in a set riddled with runs. Kruize put down a kill to start a four-point run. Fihaki posted another kill for TSU’s six-point run, and an EIU service error, followed by a Fihaki and Khalia Jordan block started Big Blue’s last three-point run. In the final play of the match, Te’o set one to Julia Pierson in the backcourt, who finished off the sweep with a final Tiger kill, 25-17.

• The win over the Panthers marks the 250th win for the TSU volleyball program.
• TSU improves to 2-0 in conference play, 4-8 overall. The last time the Tigers began conference schedule 2-0 was 2007 – the year TSU won the OVC Championship.
• In the all-time series against EIU, Big Blue is now 11-25.
