Monmouth Bowing Picked 5th in MEAC Preseason Poll

NORFOLK, Virginia - The Monmouth University bowling team was picked to finish fifth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Preseason Poll, the league announced Thursday afternoon.

"Our team will not focus too much on the preseason rankings, but I believe we have the potential to exceed these expectations," Director of Bowling Karen Grygiel said. "We are excited to get our season started and match up against the high quality competition in the MEAC."

Defending MEAC Champion North Carolina A&T State was picked to finish first, ahead of Maryland Eastern Shore, Delaware State and UAB, in that order. The Hawks earned one first-place vote and 151 total points in the poll.

Monmouth opens its season on Nov. 2 in Houston, Texas at the Track Kat Klash.

Chowan University Men's Basketball Unveils 2018-19 Slate

MURFEESBORO, North Carolina  – Chowan Men's Basketball and head coach Brett Vincent released their 2018-19 schedule on Tuesday featuring a Division I exhibition against N.C. State and 16 home contests.

The Chowan Men's Basketball team finished off the 2017-18 season with an 11-16 overall record and a 5-11 mark in the CIAA.  The Hawks fell to St. Augustine's in the opening round of the CIAA Basketball Tournament.  Chowan returns six players from last year's roster after graduating three players. 

The Blue and White opens the season with an exhibition against N.C. State on October 29 prior to opening the regular season with three straight home contests against Piedmont International on November 12 followed by Mid-Atlantic Christian (Nov. 15) and Regent (Nov. 19).  Chowan will make a short trip down to Mount Olive before the holiday and face cross-town rival Elizabeth City State at home on Nov. 28 in a non-conference battle. 

Chowan will continue their home stretch to open the season as the Hawks welcome CIAA newcomer, Claflin, on December 1.  The Hawks host Cheyney (Pa.) in a non-conference contest during the week before hosting St. Augustine's and Fayetteville State the following week in league action. 

The Hawks will travel to West Virginia State on December 16 to round out 2018. 

To bring in 2019, Chowan will host Shaw on January 3 in CIAA action prior to West Virginia State making the return trip to Murfreesboro on January 6. The Hawks will continue their tour of the CIAA Southern division traveling to Johnson C. Smith (1/10), Winston-Salem State (1/12), and Livingstone (1/14). 

The CIAA Northern Divisional play starts on January 19 as the Hawks host Elizabeth City State.  Chowan will then travel to Virginia State for a midweek contest before hosting B
owie State and Lincoln (Pa.) on January 26 and 30 respectively. 

Then, Chowan will take on Virginia Union on the road to open up February.  The Hawks will take one final step out of league action to face Salem at home on February 6 before traveling three of the final five divisional contests of the season.  The Hawks will host Virginia State on February 13 and Virginia Union in the regular season finale on February 23. 

The 2019 CIAA Basketball Tournament will be held February 26 – March 2 in Charlotte, N.C. at the Bojangles' Coliseum and the Spectrum Center.

Delgado Leads Hampton To First Big South Win in School History

The Short Story: The Lady Pirates prevailed in a tight matchup Thursday night to defeat UNC Asheville. The win was the first Big South victory in school history after joining the conference over the summer.
 
BEHIND THE NUMBERS

• Megann Delgado finished with a career day, posting 33 kills on an incredible .450 hitting percentage. Her kill total was two away from the school record for a four-set match, set by Vendula Strakova against Coppin State in 2014. It was tied for the second-most in a four-set match.
• Her 33 kills were the most in a match since Micah Leavell posted 30 against Norfolk State in 2016.
• Lena Reed-Petracek was instrumental in the 72 kills posted by HU on Thursday, finishing with 61 assists. Her total breaks her previous career best of 53 set against Bethune-Cookman last season, shattering the school record in the process.
• Hampton posted 68 assists as a team, breaking the previous four-set record of 67 set in 1999 against Maryland-Eastern Shore. The Lady Pirates had 68 assists in a five-set match against Evansville in 2013.
• Kyndall Nicholas and Lena Washington each hit over .220 for the match with 11 kills.
• HU hit .277 for the match while UNC Asheville finished with a .230 mark. The Lady Pirates ended with 72 kills while the Bulldogs tallied just 43. 
• The win was the first in four tries over UNC Asheville for the Lady Pirates.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• UNC Asheville led 3-1 in the first set, but the Lady Pirates rallied for a 5-3 edge and held the advantage for the remainder of the set. Delgado had eight kills in the first set to put the Bulldogs behind.
• Hampton jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the third set to quell the momentum gained by UNC Asheville in the second.
• Despite giving up a few points of that five-point lead, HU managed to keep the edge on the Bulldogs to pull out to a 23-20 margin. UNC Asheville scored three-straight points to tie it at 23, forcing a Hampton timeout. Peyton McClinton finished off a kill to put the visitors up for the first time of the set.
• Hampton turned away multiple UNC Asheville attempts, ultimately getting a kill from Delgado to fight off set point. A pair of Bulldog errors won the set for the Lady Pirates.
• The fourth set saw the visitors rally late again to knot it at 23-all. An attack error brought match point to HU with Delgado on the service line. Delgado sent a great attempt over the net and the speed and angle was too much for UNC Asheville as the star of Thursday's match won it for the Lady Pirates.

WHAT'S NEXT
Hampton will host USC Upstate (4-12/0-2) in another match at the Boo Williams Sportsplex on Friday. The match is slated for a 6 p.m. start.

Clark Atlanta Hosts Allen University (2-1) at 5 p.m in Panther Stadium

ATLANTA, Georgia -- The Clark Atlanta University Panthers football team returns home today to host Allen University at 5 p.m. in Panther Stadium.

CAU (0-4, 0-1 SIAC) is coming off a defeat to one of FCS football's top teams, Kennesaw State, last week, and three close losses that given a play or two could have easily been wins.

Panther Head Coach Kevin Ramsey is tweaking his lineup for this game, giving the start at quarterback to Elijah Odom.  Odom, a junior transfer from Texas Southern, has been sharing time with Charles Stafford, who will also get a significant number of snaps today.

Odom is more of a dual threat at quarterback while Stafford has passed for 620 yards and four TDs this season, two of them against Mississippi College in the opener and two last week against Kennesaw State.    Their top target continues to be Johnathan Sanders, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's leader in receptions per game with 6.2.  Sanders has hauled in 25 passes for 230 yards and a TD this season. Running back Roger Thomas is the conference's fourth leading rusher with nearly 49 yards a game, 195 total yards this season.

The CAU defense is in the top half of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings and leads the conference in pass defense. 

Defensive back Ezekiel Edmonds leads CAU in tackles with 28 this season, followed by linebacker Justin Wade and his 25 stops, 20 of them solo.  Defensive back Kenneth Morgan, who didn't play last week against KSU, has 23 stops while defensive end Kameron Rogers has 24 tackles.

They take on an Allen program that is in its first year back in football after 13 years.  The NAIA Yellow Jackets are led by former Stillman College head coach Teddy Keaton, who has his young team at 2-1 this season.  The Yellow Jackets used a hard-nosed defense that only gave up 113 yards in total offense last week in defeating Middle Georgia State 29-6.   Allen opened the season with a huge 47-3 defeat of Columbus State before losing 19-0 to Livingstone.

They rely on their running game, led by Gary Tyner (19 rushes, 152 yards, four TDs), Trenquelle Holloway (23 rushes, 119 yards, one touchdown), and Michael Richardson (18 rushes, 112 yards).  Defensively, Joseph Moultrie and Richard Hayes (16 tackles each) lead a unit that has held two teams to no more than 113 yards of offense and only allowed Division II Livingstone 19 points.

Panther Notes: It will be a homecoming of sorts for a number of players on the Allen roster.  21 Allen players hail from metro Atlanta… Allen is playing an abbreviated schedule in which they are playing varsity, junior varsity and club sport teams.  They will be part of the NAIA's Appalachian Athletic Conference…. CAU's Roger Thomas has 195 yards rushing this season, fourth best among conference rushers… CAU is tied for the conference lead in sacks with six this season, along with Kentucky State….

Howard Defeats Morgan State In MEAC Volleyball Opener, 3-1

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Jurnee Tipton recorded a match-high 14 kills and Kia Porter added 10, as host Howard defeated Morgan State, 3-1 () on Friday night in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener for both teams at Burr Gymnasium.

On a night where Howard unveiled its 2017 MEAC Championship banner prior to the match, Tamia Dockery finished with a double-double, totaling a match-high 38 assists and adding 11 digs, while Fola Wilson collected a match-high 19 digs, as the Lady Bison began their quest of a fourth straight MEAC title.

Morgan State (8-9, 0-1 MEAC), which had its season-long three-match winning streak come to an end, was led by Cristen Coryatt, who had a double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs. Zoe McBridefinished with 10 kills, Jasmin Hubbard had 12 digs and Brook Adams added 11 digs, as the Lady Bears recorded 51 digs for the contest.

Howard (8-9, 1-0 MEAC) finished the match with 48 kills on 129 attempts with 20 errors for a hitting percentage of .217. Morgan State had a hitting percentage of .181 with 39 kills on 116 attempts and 18 attack errors.

After dropping the crucial first set by three points, Morgan State regrouped to even the score at 1-1, following a 25-15 victory. The Lady Bears would hit for a set-high .267 with 11 kills on 30 attempts and just three errors. Morgan State would hold Howard to a -.029 hitting percentage in the second set, as the Lady Bison finished with a set-low nine kills and had 10 errors on 34 attempts.

Howard responded after the intermission, by defeating Morgan State in Set 3 by the identical 25-15 score from the previous set. The Lady Bison would hit for a set-best .579 with 13 kills on 19 attack attempts and just two errors.

The Lady Bears' serving woes resurfaced on Friday, as they committed 12 serving errors and had just four aces. Howard struggled as well. The Lady Bison managed to record nine aces, but had a whopping 18 serving errors.

Morgan State will now travel to Norfolk, Va. to take on the Norfolk State Spartans on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 3 p.m. at Gill Gymnasium. The Spartans (1-10, 0-1 MEAC) were dealt a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-23) loss to visiting Coppin State on Friday in the MEAC opener for both teams.

Dr. Kimbrough Squad Victorious in Annual Bleu ahd White Game

Rogers Leads Blue Team With 33 Points and 10 Rebounds, But White Team Takes The Win.

NEW ORLEANS  – The Bleu team had explosive scorers, but the White team had the last laugh.

Jeron Rogers and Malik Amos combined for 60 points for the Bleu team, but the White squad used a balanced attack to claim a 99-96 win in the annual Bleu and White game in front of a packed crowd Thursday in Dent Hall.

The Bleu team had four players score in double figures, led by Rogers game-high 33 points and 10 rebounds. Amos finished with 27 points and eight assists. Both knocked down five three-pointers in the contest. Anthony Frazier tallied 15 points (7-14 FGs) and five rebounds, while Martavious Wilson added 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

Jeffrey Drake Todd led the way for the White team finishing with a team-high 23 points, 12 assists, seven rebounds and four steals. Drake-Todd was efficient shooting 8-for-13 from the field including 4-for-8 behind the arc. Jamerson Roberts finished with a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Rick Curry chipped in 18 points and eight rebounds, while Christian Davis registered 15 points and seven rebounds. The White team also got a spark off the bench with Xavian McKay, who finished with 13 points. Jessie Ward got into foul trouble early and finished with seven points.

The intra-squad scrimmage featured a split squad with eight student-athletes on each team. For the fourth-consecutive year, Dillard University President Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough and athletic director Dr. Kiki Baker Barnes served as guest head coaches. Dr. Barnes coached the Bleu team, while Dr. Kimbrough coached the white team.

With the win, Dr. Kimbrough has now won the last two games in the series to even it at 2-2. Dr. Barnes won the inaugural game in 2015 by two (92-90) and the second game in 2016 by three (100-97). However, last year Dr. Kimbrough got his first win with a seven-point victory (96-89).

The Bleu Devils return four letter winners from a team that finished last season 21-10 overall and ranked No. 18 in the final NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Coaches' Poll (March 7, 2018). The Bleu Devils won the 2018 GCAC regular season and tournament titles en route to making their third-consecutive trip to the NAIA Tournament. Dillard has won 20-plus games the past three seasons.

Dillard opens the 2018-19 campaign at home on Thursday, Oct. 25 against Loyola (La.).

Maryland legend Gary Williams to be guest speaker at Eastern Shore Tip-Off Dinner

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland —The 2018-19 Eastern Shore Basketball Tip-off Dinner will be held October 13, 2018 in the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. This year, like last, features a Maryland Basketball legend as Hall of Famer and National Championship Coach, Gary Williams, will serve as the guest speaker.
 
Doors will open at 4 p.m. for the event and the program runs from 5-7 p.m. Cost is $75 per person or $500 for a table of eight.
 
In addition to Coach Williams, both men's head coach Clifford Reed Jr. and women's head coach Fred Batchelor will also give previews of the coming season for their squads. Back for a second year is WMDT Chanel 47 ABC Sports' Travon Miles, who will serve as the emcee.
 
"We think this will be a fantastic event," said Reed.  "It's a great night for the community, our fans and our alumni to get together and just dive into basketball. There will be some great stories, some great advice and a chance to meet the young men and women who make up our program. I hope the entire Eastern Shore can embrace what we are doing in Princess Anne and that all those who can make it will come out and enjoy this special night."
 
Williams, who is no stranger to basketball fans in the state of Maryland, was enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in August of 2014. He was inducted in July of the same year in the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, the first coach in history to enter both in the same year. Williams won the National Championship with the University of Maryland in 2002, highlighting a 22-year stint with the Terrapins. His run included 14 NCAA Tournament berths in his final 18 seasons, seven Sweet Sixteen appearances, a pair of Final Fours and two ACC Coach of the year honors. 
 
He hung up the whistle with an all-time record of 461-252 at Maryland, becoming their all-time winningest coach. A 1968 graduate of College Park, Williams had stops Lafayette, Boston College, American and Ohio State.  He retired from coaching in 2011 and still serves his alma mater as the Senior Managing Director for Alumni Relations and Athletic Development.
 
During his time at Maryland, Williams coached NBA standouts Juan Dixon, Steve Blake, Steve Francis, Lonny Baxter, Terence Morris, Chris Wilcox, Byron Mouton, Steve Francis. Greivis Vasquez, Walt Williams, Keith Booth and more including last year's tip-off dinner guest speaker Joe Smith.  Williams recruited the Eastern Shore as well, mentoring former Crisfield High School standout Andre Collins who was on the National Championship team at Maryland before finishing out his collegiate career at Loyola (Md.) and then playing overseas for several seasons.
 
"The event is a great night for Hawk Basketball," said Batchelor.  It is a chance for the supporters, alumni, ticket holders and basketball fans to gather together and get excited about our upcoming seasons.  A legend like Coach Williams will only help build on the energy that the start of the season brings.  We are grateful for his willingness to be here at the event to lend his advice, his stories and his time.  This is a can't miss event for basketball fans on the Shore and supporters of our men's and women's programs."
