Grambling State University Announced as New Host for 2019 NAIA Football National Championship
NAIA announces new home for NAIA Football National Championship
KANSAS CITY, Missouri – The NAIA announced on Monday that Grambling (La.) will become the new host of the NAIA Football National Championship at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium beginning in the 2019 season and run through the 2020 campaign.
The game, which is currently being held at Daytona Stadium in Daytona Beach, Fla., will move to Louisiana and will bring more that $1 million in impact to the region.
“The Grambling State University campus is synonymous with both football and academic achievement,” said Jim Carr, NAIA President and CEO. "We are grateful to add a host city with this incredibly rich legacy to our list of partners.”The annual championship has been held in Daytona Beach since 2014 and will conclude its current contract upon the conclusion of the 2018 NAIA National Championship when Morningside (Iowa) and Benedictine (Kan.) square-off on December 15 at 6:00 p.m. EST.
“This selection is a major accomplishment for our area,” said Travis Napper, President and CEO of the Ruston-Lincoln CVB. “Each major event adds value for the citizens, businesses, and the students who call Lincoln Parish home.“
“We couldn’t be more excited about hosting NAIA and these amazing students,” said Mayor Edward Jones of the City of Grambling. “They will get to experience the town and culture that has produced hundreds of football legends.”

HOUSTON, Texas -- Clarence McKinney is returning to Houston to become the next head football coach at Texas Southern University. McKinney, who has served as Associate Head Coach and Running Backs Coach at the University of Arizona in 2018, has an extensive history in the Houston and 3rd Ward area. "We are beyond excited to bring in someone with the experience and success that Clarence McKinney has achieved at the highest levels of the collegiate ranks," said Kevin Granger, TSU's Interim Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics. "His coaching talent, his emphasis on developing the complete student-athlete, as well as his ability to recruit locally, regionally and nationally, gives TSU a distinct advantage as we move our program to the next level."
McKinney coached running backs for four seasons under Coach Sumlin at the University of Houston and also served as recruiting coordinator. He then joined Sumlin at Texas A&M, where he was the running backs coach for six years. In 2016, the Aggies produced the one of its greatest rushing seasons under McKinney's direction.
In addition to his running backs coach duties, McKinney served as the Aggies' Offensive Coordinator and play-caller for the 2013 Cotton Bowl and the 2013 regular season. Under his leadership, the Aggies led the SEC in passing, scoring and total offense, while setting school records for passing yards, touchdowns and completion percentage.
"I am happy to be returning to my hometown and former neighborhood to lead and develop the student-athletes in the football program at Texas Southern University," said McKinney. "I am looking forward to partnering with Dr. Lane and the administration, staff, student-athletes, alumni and fans to build the type of program we can all be proud of. I appreciate Dr. Lane and Kevin Granger presenting me with the opportunity to lead this program."
Prior to Texas A&M, McKinney served as Houston's recruiting coordinator in addition to overseeing the Cougar running backs. His four-year stay at Houston was highly successful as the Cougars compiled a 36-17 record and played in three bowl games. UH posted double-digit wins twice during his stay, including 2011's school-record 13 victories and bowl triumph over Penn State.
"Coach McKinney comes to TSU with incredible connections to the high school coaches in Houston and across the state," said TSU President Dr. Austin A. Lane. "He has a unique ability to recognize and recruit top talent into a program. I'd also like to congratulate Kevin Granger and the athletic department staff on a successful search that resulted in Coach McKinney joining our university."
During his years coaching high school football, McKinney compiled a 30-8 record at Yates, and he received several accolades, including being named a 2006 Gordon Wood 4A Coach of the Year Finalist.
McKinney also served as an assistant football coach at North Shore High School (2003-05) and Booker T. Washington High School (1997-2003) where he was named the 2003 Houston Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year. Under his leadership as head and assistant coach, McKinney helped many young men receive college scholarships and pursue their football dreams.
McKinney played football for three seasons at Montana State, before transferring to University of Mary (ND) where he received his degree in elementary education. He later earned a master's in educational administration from Prairie View A&M in 2002.
McKinney and his wife, Jakmica, have three children, Britney, Atallah and Quran.
