Gold Nuggets lose by a point at NCAA D2 opponent

Xavier University of Louisiana women's basketballMEMPHIS, Tennessee — Dana Gettis scored 20 points Thursday, including the decisive basket with two seconds remaining in LeMoyne-Owen's 56-55 women's basketball victory against Xavier University of Louisiana.

The Gold Nuggets (10-5) will open their Gulf Coast Athletic Conference schedule at home at 5:30 p.m. Monday against Tougaloo in the Convocation Center.

Gettis scored to help the Lady Magicians (6-8), an NCAA Division II team, rally from a 53-49 deficit in the final 3 1/2 minutes. Gettis was fouled on her winning shot, missed the ensuing free throw, then XULA's Kyla Duncan missed a 2-pointer at the buzzer.

XULA, a longtime NAIA member, did not score after Duncan's two free throws made it 55-52 with 1:43 remaining. The Gold Nuggets committed four turnovers in the final minute.

The Gold Nuggets trailed 44-38 after Glenda Garner's basket at 3:16 of the third quarter, but XULA scored the first six points of the final period — including an Anica Gacevic 3-pointer — to take a 51-47 lead with 5:51 remaining.

Jas Hill led the Gold Nuggets with nine points and six rebounds but was 4-of-16 from the floor and missed all six of her 3-point attempts. Essence Wells and Nina German scored seven points apiece. Wells made 5-of-5 free throws, and German, a freshman, posted a career scoring best. Mikayla Bates grabbed six rebounds.

LeMoyne-Owen outshot XULA 40.4 to 31 percent from the floor. The Lady Magicians made 17-of-36 free throws — 11-of-20 by Lamontazia Blair, who finished with 17 points — to XULA's 15-of-20. The Gold Nuggets had a 38-35 rebound advantage.

BOX SCORE
Coach Bo Browder's Gold Nuggets led 19-13 after one quarter, then trailed 34-30 at halftime after scoring 11 points, matching their fewest in a second quarter this season. The teams were tied at 45 through three quarters. There were 10 lead changes and seven ties.

Gettis and Blair grabbed seven rebounds apiece. Gettis reached 20 points for the third consecutive game and the seventh time this season.
