The UVI is a Public, Land Grant Institution, and Historically Black College and University (HBCU) consisting of two campuses and two extension facilities.  The University of the Virgin Islands becomes the first HBCU in the United States to offer free tuition to residents of its state or territory.  There are currently 101 HBCUs in the U.S., down from 121 institutions that existed in the 1930's.
