XULA Nuggets beat Grambling for 2nd DI win this season

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana — Yi Chen Pao and Charlene Goreau won in doubles and singles Wednesday, and Angelica De Vincenzis earned her first victory for Xavier University of Louisiana in a 4-0 women's tennis decision against Grambling.
     

The dual-match victory is the second this season for the Gold Nuggets (3-3) against an NCAA Division I opponent. XULA is ranked third in the NAIA.
     

Xavier University of Louisiana women's tennisPao clinched with he 6-4, 6-0 victory against Tanya Magunje on the sixth singles court. De Vincenzis defeated Danna Galeano 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles, and Goreau beat Karen Muswere 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2. XULA led the other three singles matches, which were not completed.
     
Pao and Goreau, playing doubles together for the first time this spring, beat Muswere and Magunje 6-1 on the second court, then Mariia Borodii and Farah Baklouti gave XULA a 1-0 lead with a 6-2 victory against Bryttish Burts and Imperia Mora on the first court.
     

Coach Alan Green's women are 5-0 all-time against Grambling.

Gold Nuggets clinch share of GCAC regular-season title

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana women's basketball clinched a share of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular-season championship Wednesday with a thrilling 55-54 victory against SUNO at the Convocation Center.
     

The championship is the 30th all-time at the GCAC or NAIA District 30 level for the Gold Nuggets (22-6, 12-1), who won a regular-season title for the first time since the 2012-13 season. XULA won the GCAC Tournament in 2014 and 2016.
     

Xavier University of Louisiana women's basketballXULA can win the championship outright with a home victory Monday against Philander Smith — tip-off at 5:30 p.m. — or a Talladega loss Tuesday at Edward Waters. XULA will be seeded first or second in the GCAC Tournament March 1-3 at Jacksonville, Fla.
     
Essence Wells scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Gold Nuggets for the third consecutive game. Jas Hill scored 13. Both players made three 3-pointers, and Maya Trench made two.
     

SUNO scored 15 consecutive points to open the fourth quarter, including three 3s in the first 80 seconds, to take a 52-48 lead with 6:18 remaining. But XULA scored the next seven points and took the lead for good, 53-52, on two Wells free throws at 2:39.
    

Bo Browder, in his 20th season, has coached the Gold Nuggets to eight GCAC regular-season championships and eight tournament titles.

Loyd rallies Rush to 65-51 victory against SUNO

Xavier University of Louisiana men's basketballNEW ORLEANS —: William Loyd did not miss a shot in the second half Wednesday as he rallied Xavier University of Louisiana to a 65-51 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball victory against city rival SUNO at the Convocation Center.
     
The Gold Rush (16-13, 7-6) will close the regular season in a 7:30 p.m. GCAC home game Monday against Philander Smith, then travel to Jacksonville, Fla., as the No. 5 seed in the GCAC Tournament March 1-3.
     
Loyd had game highs of 23 points, nine rebounds and four steals. In the second half Loyd scored 16 points on 6-of-6 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws.
     
XULA trailed 26-19 in the 17th minute and 28-24 at halftime, then outscored the Knights 41-23 in the second half. Damani Flanagain's two free throws with 9:57 remaining put XULA ahead to stay at 43-42.
