Rush topple Panthers again to reach GCAC semifinals
The Gold Rush (18-13), seeded fourth, will play top-seeded Tougaloo in the semifinals at 7 p.m. EST Saturday.
XULA's William Loyd, named second-team All-GCAC Thursday, scored 14 points and reached double figures for the 11th consecutive game. Jeff Dixon scored 13 points and made three 3-pointers, and Damani Flanagain had 10 points and a season-high 12 rebounds.
Rayshawn Mart — XULA's other second-team All-GCAC player — Dixon and Galen Smith had four assists apiece.
Daldric Sargent scored 14 points and Kevin Shields 12 for the Panthers (11-19), the No. 5 seed.
XULA defeated Philander Smith for the second time in five days. The Gold Rush won 93-76 Monday at home. It was XULA's fourth consecutive double-digit victory.
Tougaloo, 2-0 against XULA during the regular season, defeated eighth-seeded Rust 97-64.

SUNO upsets Gold Nuggets 58-56 in GCAC opening round
The Gold Nuggets (23-7), who won the GCAC regular-season championship, will be considered for an at-large bid to the NAIA Division I National Championship. The NAIA will announce the 32-team field and pairings Wednesday, and the tournament will begin March 13 in Billings, Mont.
Moss scored eight points during a 14-2 run that turned XULA's 43-41 lead into a 55-45 SUNO advantage with 4:35 remaining. A Moss basket at 7:25 put the Lady Knights (7-22) ahead to stay at 45-43, and an Asia Thibodeaux 3-pointer closed the rally.
Freshman Anica Gacevic, who made three second-half 3s for XULA, missed from 28 feet on the Gold Nuggets' final possession.
GCAC Player of the Year Jas Hill had 14 points and five steals for the Gold Nuggets. Gacevic scored nine, Essence Wells had eight points and three steals, and Mikayla Bates scored seven. Maya Trench had eight assists, three steals and no turnovers.
Moss, a 5-foot-11 senior forward in her second season at SUNO, tied her career point high.

Another ranked team falls; Gold Nuggets win at Carey
XULA continued its success Friday, getting doubles and singles victories from Mariia Borodii and Farah Baklouti and the clincher from Angela Charles-Alfred in a 5-2 victory at William Carey. Although the Gold Nuggets (6-3), ranked third in the NAIA, dropped 2-of-3 doubles matches, they rallied with four consecutive singles victories to give the ninth-ranked Lady Crusaders (3-1) their first loss of the season.
Beginning with a victory at Brenau on Feb. 17, 2018, the Gold Nuggets have won 14 of their last 15 dual matches against top-25 opponents — 7-of-8 against top 10s. This year XULA is 3-0 against the top 25, 2-0 against the top 10.
Borodii and Baklouti defeated Xiana Garcia and Manon Benetrix 8-2 on the first doubles court. In singles, Borodii beat Valeriya Shurbina 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1, and Baklouti defeated Sabrina Goetzen 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4. Charles-Alfred ended the dual at No. 3 with her 6-3, 6-3 victory against Wijitbanjong Pakkaro.
Charlene Goreau was first off the court in singles, rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 decision against Garcia at No. 2.
"After a rough day of doubles, we regrouped and really came alive in singles," XULA coach Alan Greensaid. "Our singles lineup really came to play today."
These Nuggets are road warriors, too. Of those seven wins against top 10s, only one occurred at home. The shiniest gem of that bunch was at West Florida — a 5-3 XULA victory against a team that eventually finished 2018 as the NCAA Division II national runner-up.
XULA will return to the road March 9 — one week from Saturday — for an ambitious women's/men's tripleheader in Jackson, Miss.: 9 a.m. against Tougaloo, 1 p.m. against Rust, then 4 p.m. against NCAA Division I Jackson State. Tougaloo and Rust are Gulf Coast Athletic Conference members like XULA, and it will be the Nuggets' and Rush's first competition against the GCAC since 2015.

Gold Rush can't hold lead, fall 5-4 at William Carey
The third-ranked Gold Rush (3-2) led 4-3 afterSantiago Perez defeated Elvyn Nguyen 6-4, 6-3 on the first singles court. But the 11th-ranked Crusaders (3-1) tied the dual when Hugo Robuchon defeated Samir Chikhaoui 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3, then clinched when Ben Griedelbach beat Chris Anders 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 to end a memorable day for both teams.
"This match was great," XULA coach Alan Green said. "It was a great nationals-type atmosphere with the William Carey crowd being loud and raucous. Of course I hate the outcome, but the Rush had some good performances. We will see those guys again at our place (April 6, noon) and it will be another battle. That Carey team is a top-5 NAIA team. They just got their top two guys cleared before this match."
Perez and Shaikh Abdullah won in doubles and singles. They teamed on the first court for a 9-7 victory against Griedelbach and Tim Fischer, and Abdullah defeated Akanit Pumjit 2-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
The other Gold Rush point came at No. 2 doubles. Chikhaoui and Gabriel Niculescu defeated Nguyen and Enzo Simon 8-6.
The XULA men will play Texas A&M-Texarkana — a fifth-year program receiving votes in this week's NAIA coaches poll — at 11 a.m. Friday at XULA Tennis Center, then join the XULA women the following day for a tripleheader in Jackson, Miss.: 9 a.m. against Tougaloo, 1 p.m. against Rust and 4 p.m. against NCAA Division I Jackson State.
