XULA arena will play host to CFP Media Day Jan. 11
NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Convocation Center will be the venue for next season's College Football Playoff Media Day prior to the championship game.CFP officials made the announcement Wednesday during a news conference at NOLA's Warren Easton Charter School.
Coaches and student-athletes from both finalists will be interviewed by media on the XULA campus the morning of Jan. 11. The game will kick off two days later at the Mercedes Benz Superdome. It will be the sixth annual CFP final and the first in NOLA.
"We're delighted to be going to Xavier," CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock said. "Our staff went to Xavier (for a site tour) and the facilities blew 'em away. They just fell in love with the campus, and of course the Convocation Center is perfect for this event."
Fans are invited to attend the CFP Media Day for free.
"Back in the day 20 years ago, media day happened. Players got interviewed, coaches got interviewed and everybody went home," Hancock said. "We decided when we started the playoff to borrow an idea that the Super Bowl had started, which was to allow fans to come to media day. The Convocation Center will be wide open for people to come and enjoy watching what happens. We issue little headphones to everybody that goes to media day with channels so they can tune in to listen to their favorite coach or favorite players be interviewed.
"It's just a fun, relaxing way to participate in the College Football Playoff."
The Convocation Center opened in November 2012 and is the home of XULA basketball and volleyball. The $25 million facility also plays host to concerts, non-athletic XULA events and Carnival balls.
"The Xavier nation is excited to a part of the College Football Playoff experience in 2020," said Jason Horn, XULA's assistant vice president for student affairs/director of athletics and recreation. "Our staff and students are looking forward to welcoming fans and media to our campus with a touch of southern hospitality and with a Xavier flair."
The game will crown the champion of the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision. Clemson defeated Alabama 44-16 in last season's title game Jan. 7 at Santa Clara, Calif.
