Nuggets, Rush defeat ranked Mobile teams on road

MOBILE, Ala. — Xavier University of Louisiana began a three-day tennis trip Thursday with victories against Mobile. The Gold Nuggets, ranked third in the NAIA, defeated the 11th-ranked Mobile women 8-1. The Gold Rush, ranked seventh, rallied for a 7-2 victory against UM's 15th-ranked men.
     
The Gold Nuggets (16-4) and Gold Rush (14-6) will play next in Pensacola, Fla. — 11 a.m. Friday against Keiser (women ranked second, men sixth in NAIA) and 10 a.m. Saturday against West Florida (women ranked 15th, men eighth in NCAA Division II). Both days XULA will compete at West Florida's Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Complex.
     

Angela Charles-AlfredMariia BorodiiYi Chen Pao and Farah Baklouti won in doubles and singles for XULA's women. Charles-Alfred clinched with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Maria Toledo and won for the 12th time in her last 13 singles decisions.
     

Charles-Alfred and Goreau defeated 22nd-ranked Emily Chang and Sina Marchione 8-6 in doubles.
     

The Gold Nuggets have won 21 of their last 22 dual matches against ranked opponents — all 10 this season.
     

For the XULA men, Gabriel Niculescu and Chris Anders won in doubles and singles. They earned XULA's only doubles victory — 8-6 against Luca Cirenza and Illya Filanchuk — and Niculescu earned his team-leading 16th singles victory of the season with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 decision against Filanchuk.
     

Santiago Perez and Shaikh Abdullah both defeated ranked singles players. Perez beat No. 47 Boris Klingebiel 6-0, 6-1, and Abdullah beat No. 23 Mark Simons 7-6 (7-0), 7-5.
     

The XULA men won their most matches on the road against a ranked opponent since March 2017.
    

 Mobile's men are 12-4, and its women are 8-6.
