Smith nears XULA best on 1st day of Southern Miss Open

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Xavier University of Louisiana's Hillary Smith finished 10th in the women's triple jump Friday on the opening day of the Southern Miss Open track and field meet.
     
Smith's mark of 10.70 meters/35 feet, 1 3/4 inches was the second best of her XULA career. She is the Gold Nuggets' 2019 leader in this event with a best of 10.82 meters/35-6.
     

Teammate Hannah Young placed 11th with a mark of 10.59 meters/34-9.
     

In the men's triple jump, Gustavo Carranza was 13th with 12.80 meters/42-0, and David Katembo did not produce a mark.
     

The two-day event will resume Saturday with field events at 11:30 a.m. and track events at 12:10 p.m.
