Gold Nuggets hire Ryan Bowerman as assistant coach

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana has hired Ryan Bowerman as assistant volleyball coach.
     
Bowerman, who began his first day at XULA Monday (June 3, 2019), has 10 years' experience coaching at the club, prep and collegiate levels.
     
"After reviewing all of the outstanding candidates, it became apparent that Ryan's skill set as a coach would fit in well with where Xavier volleyball is headed," head coach Pat Kendrick said. "Ryan is a student of the game. He has a good knowledge of how to train athletes. I believe he will be play a big role in helping Xavier volleyball move to the next level."
     
Bowerman's volleyball successes include:
     •  Assistant coach for two seasons at Indiana University Kokomo, where he helped the Cougars go a combined 53-19 in their second (2013) and third (2014) seasons as an intercollegiate program.
     •  Five seasons as an assistant coach at North Montgomery High School in his hometown of Crawfordsville, Ind., where the Chargers were 123-45 during his tenure.
     •  Helping his club team, the Irish Juniors of Indianapolis, finish fifth in the boys 18 division of the 2007 Junior Olympics. Bowerman was a Swiss Army knife for that team; he played defensive specialist, setter and outside hitter.
     
Bowerman attended college in his hometown, too. He received his bachelor's degree from Wabash College in 2011, then obtained a master's from IU Kokomo in 2016. He was an honor student at both places.
     
Bowerman replaces Hilary Lobenstein, who was named head coach at NCAA Division II West Alabama in February.
     
XULA in 2018 won Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships and qualified for the NAIA National Championship tournament — all for the eighth consecutive year. The Gold Nuggets finished 26-7 and tied the school record for victories in a season.
