Wray reaches NACAC 200 final, places fourth

Shalysa WrayNEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana track and field standout Shalysa Wrayfinished fourth Sunday in the women's under-23 200-meter dash at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) Championships in Querétaro, Mexico.
     

Wray, who was seeded ninth, produced a time of 24.39 seconds in the final. Top-seeded Angie Annelus of the United States and the University of Southern California won in 22.84.
     

Wray respresented the Cayman Islands, where she was born. competed in the 100 semifinals Friday but did not reach the final. Her time of 11.93 ranked 11th out of 13 competitors.
     
Wray was a XULA freshman during the spring of 2019 and helped the Gold Nuggets repeat as Gulf Coast Athletic Conference champion and place 23rd — the Gold Nuggets' best-ever finish — at the NAIA National Outdoor Championships. Wray was the only woman to earn All-America in four events at the 2019 NAIA nationals.

Plummer earns state coach of the year from LSWA

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Yhann Plummer has earned his third major award of the recently completed academic year — Louisiana Coach of the Year in women's cross country for 2018.
     

A Louisiana Sports Writers Association panel of college sports publicists selected Plummer.
     

Xavier University of Louisiana women's cross countryIn his debut season at XULA, Plummer led the Gold Nuggets' distance runners to the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference team championship and a berth at the NAIA national meet. He earlier was selected GCAC Coach of the Year in that sport and in women's track and field.
     
Plummer was XULA's only representative on the LSWA's All-Louisiana teams in track and field and cross country, all of which were announced Saturday evening.
     

Plummer joined Pat Kendrick (volleyball) and Bo Browder (women's basketball) as Louisiana Coach of the Year recipients from XULA in 2018-19. It's the second time that three XULA individuals received the LSWA's state coaching awards in the same academic year.
     

It's the 12th time in the last 13 years that XULA produced at least one LSWA Louisiana Coach of the Year.
