Goreau becomes Nuggets' 1st 4-time NAIA All-American

Xavier University of Louisiana women's tennisNEW ORLEANS — Charlene Goreau missed out this time on the first team, but the Xavier University of Louisiana women's tennis standout still can brag: She completed her collegiate career as the Gold Nuggets' first four-time NAIA All-American.

After earning first-team recognition the past three seasons on NAIA committee-selected teams, Goreau was chosen to the second team for 2018-19.

But XULA — 19-6 this past season, an NAIA national semifinalist for the fifth time in seven years and No. 3 in the coaches postseason poll — wasn't shut out on the first team. Mariia Borodii made it for the second straight year, and she was joined by doubles partner Farah Baklouti.

Angela Charles-Alfred earned honorable mention.

The other All-America team, sanctioned by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, forms its list from the top 20 singles players and top 10 doubles teams at the end of the season. The Gold Nuggets have four ITA All-Americans for the second straight year: Baklouti, Borodii, Charles-Alfred and Goreau.

It's Goreau's third time to make ITA/NAIA All-America, tying Kourtney Howell for the most appearances in Gold Nuggets history.

Borodii and Charles-Alfred made the ITA team for the second consecutive year.

Baklouti, Borodii and Charles-Alfred will return to XULA in August. Baklouti, from Sfax, Tunisia, will be a senior. Borodii, from Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, and Charles-Alfred, from Saint-Pierre, Martinique, will be juniors.

Goreau, from Toulouse, France, was XULA's Female Athlete of the Year for 2018-19. As a senior she was 20-10 in singles and 24-6 in doubles. Her ITA final rankings were seventh nationally and seventh in the South in singles and third nationally and second in the South in doubles with Charles-Alfred.

Baklouti was 21-8 in singles and 26-2 in doubles. She and Borodii were ranked seventh nationally and sixth in the South in doubles. Baklouti and Borodii were 21-1 as a doubles team and won their first 21 decisions.

Borodii, 19-5 in singles and 26-2 in doubles, ranked eighth nationally and eighth in the South in singles. Charles-Alfred, 14-5 in singles and 16-6 in doubles, ranked 20th nationally and 11th in the South in singles.

Goreau and Borodii made the ITA's final top 10 in singles for the second consecutive season.

Perez, Abdullah end year with NAIA All-America honors

Xavier University of Louisiana men's tennisNEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Santiago Perez and Shaikh Abdullah are NAIA All-Americans in men's tennis on both end-of-season teams of 2018-19.

Perez and Abdullah made the first team on the NAIA's committee-selected squad, and their final Intercollegiate Tennis Association player rankings earned them berths on the ITA's All-America list.

Both student-athletes will return to XULA in August. Perez, from Pereira, Colombia, will be a sophomore, and Abdullah, from Hyderabad, India, will be a junior.

Perez was 18-3 in singles and 20-8 in doubles. He won 17 consecutive singles decisions from Feb. 10-May 15, all at the No. 1 position. Perez was third in the ITA end-of-season NAIA national singles rankings and second in the South. In doubles, Perez and Abdullah were third nationally and third in the South.

Perez became the third Gold Rush freshman to make the NAIA's committee-selected first team, all in the last four years.

Abdullah was 10-6 in singles and 15-7 in doubles. He was the leading Gold Rush scorer at the NAIA National Championship tournament, going 2-0 in singles and 3-1 in doubles.

The final top 20 singles players and top 10 doubles teams earn ITA All-America.

This was the eighth consecutive season that the Gold Rush had a first-team All-American on the NAIA's committee-selected list and the fourth consecutive year with two first-team All-Americans.

XULA was 17-9 this past season, finished second at NAIA nationals for the third time in four years and was No. 2 in the coaches postseason poll.
