Nuggets add veteran hitter to already potent lineup

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana volleyball, which hit a school-record .262 a year ago and returns two record-setting hitters, has added another strong offensive option to the 2019 roster with the signing of 6-foot-2 Ema Causevic of Ravenna, Italy.
     

Causevic, who plays outside hitter and right side, ranked fifth last season in the NJCAA with 4.09 kills per set and second with 4.9 points per set for Otero Junior College of La Junta, Colo. Causevic produced 393 kills, 43 aces, 63 blocks and 310 digs for a 24-7 team.
     

Xavier University of Louisiana women's volleyballCausevic played for NCAA Division II's Academy of Art (San Francisco) in 2016 and had 166 kills, 34 aces, 179 digs and 34 blocks.
     
Back home she helped Volleyro Casal De Pazzi finish eighth in Italy's under-18 championships.
     

Causevic, who participated in the Gold Nuggets' first day of practice Monday, will major in art and have two seasons of eligibility at XULA. She joins a team that includes 2018 XULA season record holders Kayla Black (407 kills) and Vivica Price-Spraggins (.400 hitting percentage).
     

XULA will open the season at home next week in its Early Bird Invitational at the Convocation Center. The Gold Nuggets will play Aug. 16 against Cumberland at noon and Coastal Georgia at 6 p.m., then Aug. 17 against Viterbo at noon and city rival Loyola at 6 p.m.

Texas distance standout signs with Gold Rush

Xavier University of Louisiana men's cross countryNEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana has signed district champion Samuel Abdellatif of Murphy, Texas, and Wylie High School to an athletic scholarship in men's track and field/cross country.
     

Abdellatif won the UIL 6A District 10 individual title during the 2018 cross country season and led the Pirates to the team championship. He followed that performance with a career-best of 15 minutes, 16.55 seconds for three miles at the Region 2 meet, earning him a ninth-place finish and a spot at the state meet.
     

During the 2019 outdoor track season, Abdellatif qualified for the Texas Relays in the 3,200-meter relay.
     

In club competition, Abdellatif earned top-10 finishes for the Texas Jack Rabbits in the 3,000- and 1,500-meter runs at the 2018 Junior Olympics.
     

Abdellatif was academic all-state as a senior. He will be a biology / pre-medical major at XULA.
     

Abdellatif is the Gold Rush's second announced distance signee, joining Ahmad Wilsonof New Orleans and Brother Martin High School. Abdellatif is the second Wylie student-athlete to sign this year with XULA — men's basketball guard Cameron Wells was the first.
     

XULA men's cross country last fall won its 11th Gulf Coast Athletic Conference team championship in its last 12 attempts, then in the spring set a meet record for most points by a runner-up at the GCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
     

NOTES:  Second-year head coach Yhann Plummer said that Devin Macklin-Jackson, a freshman from St. Louis, Mo., and a graduate of Rockwood Summit High School, will join the men's roster as a walk-on . . . New to the women's cross country roster will be 2019 track and field letterwinners Bria Ward and Alexis Williams . . . Rejoining the Gold Nuggets will be Hajjia Mohammed, who lettered as a freshman in 2017.
