Gold Rush add exhibition game Nov. 30 at UNO

NEW ORLEANS — City rivals Xavier University of Louisiana and the University of New Orleans will resume their men's basketball series at 6 p.m. Nov. 30 — the Saturday after Thanksgiving — at UNO's Lakefront Arena.

Jason Horn, XULA's assistant vice president for student affairs / director of athletics & recreation, announced Wednesday the game, which completes the Gold Rush schedule for 2019-20.

Xavier University of Louisiana men's basketballIt will be the first meeting in eight seasons between the Gold Rush, a longtime NAIA member, and the Privateers of NCAA Division I. XULA will count the game as an exhibition.

Most recently XULA and UNO met twice during the 2011-12 season, with the Gold Rush winning 79-70 at UNO and 75-69 at The Barn.

It will be the first of two XULA appearances at Lakefront Arena this season. The Gold Rush and Gold Nuggets will play Dillard there in the Bleu Devil Classic Feb. 29.

To fit UNO into the schedule, XULA moved its trip to William Carey — originally scheduled for Nov. 30 — to 7 p.m. Nov. 14. However, the XULA women's game at William Carey will remain on Nov. 30.

Coach Alfred Williams's Gold Rush will play 30 regular-season games and two exhibitions. The other exhibition will be Nov. 11 at NCAA DI Southeastern Louisiana.

XULA earns silver on Champions of Character scorecard

ImageNEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana Athletics achieved silver status on the NAIA's Champions of Character Five-Star scorecard for the 2018-19 academic year, the NAIA announced Tuesday.

The NAIA measures institutions on a demonstrated commitment to Champions of Character and earned points in character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Institutions earned points based on exceptional student-athlete GPAs and by having minimal to no ejections during competition throughout the course of the academic year.

XULA scored 89 points out of 100 and was one of 180 schools — nine more than the previous year — to earn the Champions of Character award. XULA missed the gold level, where it was in 2017-18, by one point.

"Xavier University embraces the core values of the NAIA Champions of Character initiative," said Jason Horn, XULA assistant vice president for student affairs / director of athletics & recreation. "We are proud of our student-athletes, coaches and staff for applying these important values to their lives in athletic competition, in the classroom and in the community.

"Next year," Horn added, "we plan to return to the gold level."

Sixteen NAIA conferences earned the prestigious award — including the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, of which XULA is a member — by having at least 60 percent of their member schools achieve gold, silver or bronze status.
