Bashir, Charles-Alfred, Perez reach HBCU finals

ImageATLANTA — Xavier University of Louisiana's Lailaa BashirAngela Charles-Alfred and Santiago Perez reached A-bracket singles finals at the HBCU National Tennis Championships.

All three won twice Friday, and each is 3-0 in singles in this season-opening event. It's the collegiate debut for Bashir, from Jackson, Miss., and a former Jackson Academy standout.

Both singles finals will start at 10 a.m. EDT Saturday.

"Today was a lot better than yesterday," 17th-year XULA head coach Alan Green said. "Everyone rebounded well and won some matches today. Lailaa upset the No. 2 seed in straight sets in the semis after having a very tough match in the quarterfinals. She's playing well so far for us.

"Angela has been rock solid and showing maturity on the court. I'm proud of the way she's playing. Santiago is playing like a grown man out there. He's improving his game and moving guys around the court."
