MEAC Volleyball Recap, Oct. 4
XULA's McGee, Phillips receive GCAC's weekly honors
McGee is Defender of the Week for the second time this season. A freshman outside hitter from Sacramento, Calif., and a graduate of Inderkum High School, McGee produced match-high totals in digs and aces in GCAC victories against Tougaloo and SUNO. She helped the Gold Nuggets hold opponents to a hitting percentage of .071. McGee's two-match totals included 21 digs, five aces and zero errors in 25 receptions of serve.
Phillips is Setter of the Week for the first time this season and the 12th time in her career — one behind teammate and school record-holder Eva Le Guillou. A senior from the Los Angeles suburb of Gardena, Calif., and a graduate of Bishop Montgomery High School, Phillips averaged 7.33 assists per set. Her totals included 22 assists, four digs and one ace.
Phillips is the second from XULA volleyball to earn GCAC weekly awards in four different seasons. Taylor Reuther (2011-13, 2015) was the first.
XULA will play a non-conference match at 3 p.m. Friday at the University of Mobile in Mobile, Ala., and GCAC matches Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla., against Talladega at 1 p.m. EDT and Edward Waters at 6 p.m. EDT. The Gold Nuggets (15-4, 7-0) lead the GCAC by one match over city rival Dillard. The Saturday venue will be Adams-Jenkins Sports and Music Complex at Edward Waters College.

Causevic-led Gold Nuggets earn first-ever season sweep of Mobile Rams
The Gold Nuggets (16-4), playing three times on the road in two days, won their eighth in a row. They're 9-1 on the road this season, 5-0 on opponents' courts.
XULA swept the season series from Mobile for the first time — the Gold Nuggets won in three sets at home Aug. 30 — and beat the Rams on their home court for the second time ever and the first time since 2013.
Causevic's eight aces tied for the second-most by a Gold Nugget in a match. They were the most since Taylor Reuther's school-record nine aces against Rust on Sept. 8, 2012.
Causevic produced 12 kills, a match high, and had six digs and a block. She hit .279 in 29 attacks. Causevic served five aces during the Gold Nuggets' 14-1 run to open the fourth set.
Mobile (10-9) outhit XULA .219 to .148 in the first set, but the Gold Nuggets rallied and outhit the Rams .211 to .011 in the final three sets.
Vivica Price-Spraggins had nine kills, an ace and four blocks for XULA. Jaida Dowd, in one of her best performances of the season, hit .400 with eight kills and two blocks. Maya Smith had four blocks, Jennifer Torres produced a match-high 13 digs, and Taylor McGee had 11 digs and two blocks.
Head coach Pat Kendrick platooned her setters again, with Eva Le Guillou collecting 19 assists and Tiffany Phillips 11. Those two combined for 14 digs.
Anna Claire Harris had 11 kills, 11 digs and a block for Mobile, but the senior also had three service errors and five reception errors. Samantha Nichols had 10 kills and three blocks, and Avery Wasdin and Jocelyn Mahayag had 10 digs apiece.
XULA led in all the positive statistical categories, outhitting the Rams .197 to .063 for the match and producing advantages of 35-28 in assists, 12-4 in aces, 59-53 in digs and 8-5 in blocks. XULA finished with 38 total errors, but the Rams committed 50.
XULA, 7-0 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference and the leader by a match over city rival Dillard, will play two GCAC matches Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla.: 1 p.m. EDT against Talladega and 6 p.m. EDT against Edward Waters. Venue for both matches will be the Adams-Jenkins Sports and Music Complex at Edward Waters College.
