MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota  --
The Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport at the University of Minnesota and WeCOACH have issued its 9th year, 2020-2021 WOMEN IN COLLEGE COACHING REPORT CARD. The data shows that 357 NCAA Division I schools were in the evaluation pool with 20 institutions (5.6%) earning an A grade, which represents programs with women coaching women at a percentage greater than 70%.  In simpler terms, the grades are based on the percentage of women head coaches of women’s teams.

The HBCUs earning a grade of A were: Florida A&M University, Texas Southern University, and Tennessee State University.

Twenty-one institutions (19.9%) received a B grade. and 111 institutions (31.1%) received a D grade.  Forty-four institutions (12.3%) received a failing grade of F (24% or fewer women head coaches), making the number of F grades more than twice the number of A grades.

Florida A&M University (FAMU) is the leaderboard top institution/ranked Number 1 with the highest percentage at 85.7% with women in college coaching women.  The report states: "Two institutions at the time of data collection (Florida A&M and the University of Cincinnati) had 80% or higher women head coaches, while three institutions (Oklahoma State, Texas Rio Grande Valley, and University of Evansville) had 0% women head coaches-ZERO."

FAMU Athletics is under the leadership of  Kortne F. Gosha, Vice President and Director of Athletics, and he is to be congratulated for operating the FAMU athletics program in a gender-inclusive, diverse and equitable manner in his hiring and retention practices.  In this area, Mr. Gosha is doing the job superior to all other athletic directors at 356 NCAA D-I institutions.  It does matter that Women Head Coaches are hired and retained to coach women collegiate teams at the Division I level.

Texas Southern University was ranked 9th scoring 75.0 percent and Tennesse State University was 11th with 71.4 percent, scoring above the 70 percent A standard.  Mr. Kevin Granger, Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics at Texas Southern is to be commended for his leadership and achieving the Turker Center grade of an A.

Likewise, Dr. Mikki Allen, Director of Athletics at Tennessee State University deserves special recognition for earning the grade of A.  This is truly Excellence With Caring for historically under-resourced institutions.

Appendix B (Page 26) of the Report ranks all 357 NCAA Division I schools including GRADE, PERCENTAGE, AND NUMBER OF WOMEN HEAD COACHES BY INSTITUTION 2020-21. This is essential reading for all prospective Division I Student-Athletes.  Did your college or university receive a passing grade?  So, what does that tell you about their diversity and inclusion programs for Women?
