TOUGALOO, Miss. - The 2023 Hope Credit Union GCAC Men’s Basketball Tournament started with a defensive battle that saw second seed Philander Smith push past Oakwood on Thursday afternoon.
The matchup started slowly as the opponents felt each other out early but by the midpoint of the first stanza, the Panthers surged and did not look back.
Oakwood trailed by as many as 10 at one point but hustled to close the scoring gap. Using a combination of strong defense and high-quality three-point shots, Philander Smith carried a 36-23 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Panthers continued to roll.
An uptick in scoring from the Ambassadors halfway through the stanza narrowed the point differential to 12 points but it would not be enough as Philander Smith continued to roll down the stretch. The Panthers held out for the 60-41 win.
Christione Rufus led PSC with 14 points, followed by Dontrell Johnson with 11.
Oakwood was led in scoring by Justin Edwards with nine points. Robert Booker pulled down a game-high 10 boards.
No. 2 Philander Smith will face the quarterfinal game winner between #3 Dillard University and #6 Fisk Bulldogs on Saturday, February 25 at 2 p.m. in the semifinals of the 2023 Hope Credit Union GCAC Women’s Basketball Championship.

Commanding first half lead lifts #1 RUST to win over SUNO
TOUGALOO, Miss. - A commanding first-half performance lifted top seed Rust to a first win over Southern University at New Orleans at the 2023 Hope Credit Union GCAC Women’s Basketball.
Rust jumped out to a 10-point lead and continued to pile on the points.
By halftime, the Lady Bearcats led 31-19, paced by seven points from Derekiya Patterson.
Scrappy SUNO battled in the second stanza adding points late in the game but were unable to overcome the deficit that began in the first half.
The Lady Knights were able to move to within eight, 41-33, late in the third quarter. However, Rust would not be denied, adding 20 more points in the final quarter en route to its 64-47 win.
Patterson logged a team-high 12 points and Katie Blackmon recorded a game-high seven rebounds.
Three Lady Knights reached double figures, led by Jordan Harris with 11 followed by Aalexuz Bourne and Mckenna Harris each with 10 points.
No. 1 Rust will face the winner of #4 Wiley College and #5 Dillard University on Saturday, February 25 at 5 p.m. in the semifinals of the 2023 Hope Credit Union GCAC Women’s Basketball Championship.

#2 FISK has offensive eruption to pull away from Oakwood
TOUGALOO, Miss. - An offensive eruption helped No. 2 Fisk pull away from No. 8 Oakwood for a quarterfinal win on Thursday at the 2023 Hope Credit Union Women’s Basketball Championship.
Buckhanon, who was also tabbed Newcomer of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, finished with a double-double of 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead both teams in the categories. The Lady Ambassadors’ Trenisha Adams and Keiah Daney each posted 10 points in the effort.
The first half was tightly contested between the two opening round foes. The first quarter saw the teams separated only by four points,
The second half was all the Lady Bulldogs, powered by 2023 GCAC Player of the Year senior Maya Buckhanon. Fisk dropped in 21 points in the third quarter, making the gap, 53-36.
Oakwood attempted to close the gap in the final stanza, but it was too little too late as Fisk pushed for the 71-52 win.
No. 2 Fisk will face the winner of #3 Philander Smith College and #6 Tougaloo College on Saturday, February 25 at 12 p.m. in the semifinals of the 2023 Hope Credit Union GCAC Women’s Basketball Championship.
