Grambling State Secures Federal Ownership of Its Iconic “G”

                                  U.S. Trademark Registration No. 8148992

GRAMBLING, Louisiana — For generations of alumni, athletes, and fans, the meaning of the black-and-gold “G” has always been clear — it stands for Grambling. Now, that legacy is officially protected. Grambling State University has secured federal trademark registration for its iconic “G” mark, establishing legal ownership of one of the most recognizable symbols in HBCU athletics.

The registration follows a strategic effort led by the University’s Division of Administration and Business Affairs, working with external counsel Kean Miller, to resolve prior refusals and navigate considerations involving other nationally recognized “G” marks, including those used by the Green Bay Packers and the University of Georgia.

“This registration represents more than a legal milestone — it affirms ownership of our history, excellence, and brand,” said Dr. Martin Lemelle, Jr., President of Grambling State University, who also recognized the leadership of Penya Moses, Vice President for Administration and Business Affairs, and the partnership with Kean Miller in securing the approval.

With federal protection now secured, the University is positioned to expand national licensing partnerships, merchandise distribution, and NIL opportunities for student-athletes. When fully leveraged, industry projections suggest the Grambling brand could generate more than $5 million annually through licensing, apparel partnerships, and athlete-driven NIL collaborations.

For decades, the black-and-gold “G” has stood as a symbol of excellence in college football and HBCU culture — representing the championship tradition built under Hall of Fame coach Eddie Robinson, the energy of the World Famed Tiger Marching Band, and the enduring pride of the GramFam community. With federal trademark protection now secured, that symbol — recognized by generations across the world — enters a new era of protection, opportunity, and growth for Grambling State University.

For generations the “G” has meant Grambling — now it’s officially ours.
