JOHNSON: Southern's Willie Quinn proves that size isn't everything

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- Willie Quinn made no bones about it after Saturday’s game — he has always dreamed of setting records.

And how can you blame him? A record would be physical proof that he was the best to ever do a thing at a place, and he’s spent his whole life hearing about how his size made him physically incapable of being just that.

Of course, that’s not true. There are a lot more measures to a man than inches and pounds. Quinn shows that on a daily basis.

There are also many ways to measure a unit on a football team, but only one real important one. For an offense, it’s scoring points. For a defense, it’s preventing the other team from doing that.

Both of Southern’s units have been doing ...

Miles Golden Bears rebound against Lane Dragons

JACKSON, Tennessee -- A fast start and strong finish helped Miles defeat Lane 26-14 Saturday afternoon at Lane Field. The win helped the Golden Bears (4-3, 2-1 SIAC West) get back in the win column but after a Kentucky State upset win over Tuskegee, last week's loss to the Thorobreds will prove to cost the team an opportunity to defend its SIAC Championship.

Miles led 17-0 at halftime but Lane came charging in the third quarter. A 24-yard touchdown run by Marcus Holliday on the opening possession of the second half was followed by a 15-yard fumble recovery by Will Lacy Jr. that cut the Dragons' deficit to 17-14.

The Golden Bears, though, did not fold. Nick Christiansen - who was excellent punting the ball (44.2 yard average, 4-of-5 inside the 20) and closed out the game with a 16-yard run on a fake punt for a first down - booted his second 22-yard field goal of the game with 8:31 left to extend the advantage to 20-14. Then, after Lane muffed a punt, Miles scored on the ensuing play with David Whipple (118 yards passing) hitting Vincent Davis from 18 yards for his first career touchdown catch to cement the victory.

Miles was lights out defensively in the first half, keeping the Dragons out of the end zone and forcing the action as the home team had trouble even moving the ball with just 79 yards of total offense. A Ricky Clark fumble recovery led to a touchdown run by Whipple in the second quarter and great field position allowed Ger'Kerry Jackson (52 yards rushing) to find the end zone for the second straight week. Both scoring runs were four yards.

With the score close in the fourth quarter, Miles held Lane to just three yards total offense. Emmanuel Ray had a team-high 10 tackles (eight solo) while Jarmari Ford and LaBarron Rodgers each had seven tackles (six solo) for the Golden Bears, who travel to Clark Atlanta next Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Jackson State's offense proves something big to Hughes

HOUSTON, Texas -- Jackson State’s offense proved something to coach Tony Hughes on Saturday.

The Tigers rushed 31 times for 185 yards and attempted 28 passes for 177 yards in their 21-13 road win against Texas Southern at BBVA Compass Stadium. The near-perfect balance in yards gained and plays left Hughes believing the Tigers have found their identity on offense.

“What we played like (Saturday) was the identity that we really want,” he said. “Anytime we rush for 200 yards, we win. When we lead the game in rushing yards, we rush more than our opponent, we win the game. It’s just that simple.

“But it’s also balance. I want to be able to run the ball and throw the ball. When you’re able to run the ball, it makes it a lot easier to throw the ball because everybody has to stop the run.”

The Tigers (3-4, 3-2 SWAC), who play host to Prairie View A&M (4-3, 4-1) for homecoming at 2 p.m. Saturday, found success because of the steady play of quarterback Jarin Morikawa, who returned Oct. 15 from a broken wrist, and a continued improvement from their running game.

Southern notebook: Willie Quinn breaks Southern receiving record ... with help from stat correction

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- Willie Quinn tied Michael Hayes for Southern’s all-time receptions lead with a 13-yard catch in the first quarter of Saturday’s game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Then he broke the record before he made another catch.

Quinn wasn't credited with a catch he made the previous week against Jackson State, when the official scorer credited reserve running back Tevin Horton with a 29-yard catch on the second play of the game. Quinn was the player who actually made the catch.

The error was not fixed until midway through Saturday's game against UAPB, after Quinn had already tied the record and before he made another catch.

The Miami native was awarded a game ball, which was pulled after he recorded what would’ve been the record-setting catch. He said he was going to get the ball signed by Dray Joseph, Austin Howard and Deonte Shorts, the three quarterbacks who have thrown him a pass at Southern.

“I’ve been dreaming of this since I was a little kid, to break records,” Quinn said. “Now I’m at the college level doing it. It’s just a blessing.”

Southern 49, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 17: Luke Johnson's top three thoughts

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- 1. WHAT WE LEARNED: Last week’s sluggish performance against Jackson State was just that, and not indicative of what was to come from Southern. The Jaguars beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff the way they were supposed to, then spent time after the game lamenting the three possessions they had that didn’t end in scores.

2. TRENDING NOW: Willie Quinn set the Jaguars’ all-time receptions record with his 206th career catch Saturday night, and he is now less than 100 yards away from becoming the second receiver in school history to crack 3,000 career yards receiving. He did it on a night when he was outstanding as usual, scoring two more touchdowns.

Big second half pushes Southern past Arkansas-Pine Bluff in 49-17 homecoming win

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- The Southern football team is off to such a strong start in conference play that coach Dawson Odums and his star players were legitimately upset about having a double-digit halftime lead Saturday against Arkansas Pine Bluff.

“We didn’t finish off the first half to our liking,” Odums said.

The frustration was that Southern was good — just not as good as it could have been.

“We had five possessions in the first half, and I think we should’ve scored on all five of them,” junior quarterback Austin Howard said. “I’m not impressed with that; I’m not excited about it. It is what it is.”

Then the second half came.

The Jaguars scored touchdowns on four consecutive possessions to turn an 11-point lead into a 49-17 final score, sending the 23,156 fans who took part in the homecoming festivities home happy.

Kentucky State upsets No. 5 Tuskegee, clinches division title

Thorobreds upset Tuskegee, earn berth in SIAC championship game

TUSKEGEE, Alabama -- Kentucky State University’s football team notched one of the biggest victories in the program’s history with a 10-9 defeat of No. 5 ranked Tuskegee University at Cleve L. Abbott Memorial Alumni Stadium on Saturday.

The victory clinched the SIAC West Division title for the Thorobreds, who will play in the conference championship game Nov. 12 in Montgomery, Ala.

“This game was unbelievable,” KSU head coach John L. Smith said. “I’ve been a part of some monumental wins, but I’ve never been a part of a team that defeated a top-five ranked opponent on the road. Plus we blocked two field goal attempts to do it; you have to give it up to our special teams and our defense.”

After trailing 10-3 for a majority of the second half, Tuskegee looked to tie the game in the closing moments.

SWith 1:25 remaining in regulation, the Golden Tigers pushed across a 1-yard touchdown, pulling within a point of KSU at 10-9 with the extra point awaiting. On the attempt, junior defensive lineman Donovan Cecil broke through two blockers to swat the extra point attempt, leaving the Thorobreds on top.

WSSU Rams coast to victory over Livingstone

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina  -- It’s hard to be a Ram, but sometimes it’s easy.

Winston-Salem State bolted to a big lead over Livingstone on Saturday afternoon before cruising to a 40-21 win at Bowman Gray Stadium.

The easy part was in the first quarter, when the Rams led 30-0 thanks to an uprising on offense that hasn’t been seen since the glory days of the run to the Division II championship game in 2012.

In the first 8 minutes, quarterback Rod Tinsley threw for three touchdowns, ran 60 yards for a another score, and defensive end Joe Wright had a safety.

“That’s a great way to start a game,” coach Kienus Boulware of the Rams said. “I wish we could have done a little more in between, but we’ll take that. We had the wind to our back in the first quarter, and the guys just came out ready to play.”

One thing that was sticking to the Rams like superglue was a statement coach Daryl Williams of the Blue Bears made in July. He said his team planned to win the Southern Division title by beating the Rams on their own field.

The loss snaps a four-game Bowie State win streak and sets the Bulldogs record at 5-3 overall, 4-1 in the CIAA and 2-1 in the North.

The Panthers responded with a nine-play, 75 yard scoring drive, capped off by a 20 pass and catch by Shawheem Dowdy (Baltimore, Md.) to Gustavious Dames (Miami, Fla.). JeanClaude Brooks' (Charlotte, N.C.) extra point was good but Bowie State went into halftime with a 28-21 advantage.

VUU's Dowdy hooked Lavatiae Kelly for a 72-yard touchdown to give the Panthers their first lead at 35-28.

Otis Brown beats the clock, leads Fort Valley State to victory

FORT VALLEY, Georgia -- The Fort Valley State Wildcats gave up a 20-point halftime lead in the second half but came back strong in the fourth quarter to knock off Central State 30-28.

Otis Brown, who started his first game at quarterback this season, led a seven-minute drive that he capped with a 2-yard run with only two seconds left.

Fort Valley State improves to 2-6, 2-3 in the SIAC.

Three who mattered

Brown: The senior has had a strong season as a receiver, with 23 catches and seven touchdowns, but stepped into the quarterback position when starter Demontay Jones injured his knee Oct. 15 at Florida Tech. Brown recorded two rushing touchdowns and added a passing touchdown, keying a late comeback that gave Fort Valley State the win. Brown threw for 128 yards and ran for 52, with 43 of the rushing yards coming in the fourth quarter.

Late score helps Albany State put away Clark-Atlanta

ALBANY, Georgia — Ta’Keevian Harris tried everything he could to get into the end zone.

On a critical third-and-1 play from the Clark-Atlanta 29-yard line, the former Westover standout caught a short pass and turned it upfield and fought until getting tackled at the three.

Two plays later on a quarterback bootleg, quarterback Caleb Edmonds scored on a two-yard run give Albany State a 10-point lead with 4:34 left in the game.

The decisive touchdown finally put away pesky Clark-Atlanta Saturday afternoon and the Rams won a hard-fought 17-7 contest on homecoming at the Albany State University Coliseum before 10,273.

“I really felt like I needed some more milk,” said Harris, who finished with two catches for 37 yards. “I had everything I needed, I was open, but to get caught on the three-yard line, I knew my teammates were going to come back and make it up for me. I was just thinking about making up for those little dropped balls earlier.”

Harris’ catch was gutsy considering the Rams (4-3, 3-1 SIAC) needed something positive to finally put away the Panthers, who with a victory, could have captured the SIAC East Division. Instead, Albany State now sits in the driver’s seat with games left against Benedict and Fort Valley State in the annual Fountain City Classic.

PVAMU's Big Second-Half Outburst Not Enough At Rice

HOUSTON, Texas – Prairie View A&M University football put together a big second half, but it was not enough as the Panthers lost at Rice 65-44 Saturday at Rice Stadium.

Trailing 45-14 at halftime, PVAMU (4-3 overall, 4-1 SWAC) outscored the Owls 30-23 and outgained the FBS opponent 335-218 over the final 30 minutes, but couldn't close the scoring deficit to less than the final margin.

Jalen Morton accounted for 325 yards (career-high 278 passing, 47 rushing) and three touchdowns in his first career start. Darius Floyd had career highs in receptions (six) and receiving yards (139) with one touchdown, while Dawonya Tucker had two rushing touchdowns for Prairie View A&M.

"I was proud of the guys," said Prairie View A&M head coach Willie Simmons. "They competed. They fought and played for four quarters, and that's all you can ask for…There's some things we have to do better. In the first half, we turned the ball over a bunch, had penalties and gave up some big plays. At halftime, we came in and made some adjustments and got the guys to just play football. When we did that, we played pretty well. In the second half, we outscored them, so there's a lot of positives to take away from this game."

Joshua Simmons returned a kickoff 93 yards for a first-quarter touchdown to tie the score at 7-all less than three minutes into game. The Owls (1-6, 0-4 C-USA) took advantage of Panther mistakes in scoring 31 second quarter points to break the game open.

Morton's 39-yard touchdown run late in the first half gave a spark to the Panther offense, which went on to score touchdowns on five of their final seven full possessions of the game, outscoring Rice 37-23 over the final 33+ minutes.

Morton's career-long 62-yard touchdown pass to Floyd on the opening drive of the third quarter cut the deficit to 45-21. Following a Rice touchdown, the Panthers' Treveon Billings blocked the PAT, which was recovered by Terrence Singleton and returned for two points. On the ensuring drive, Quinton Bell caught a 47-yard scoring pass from Morton to cut the deficit to 51-30.

After a pair of Rice touchdowns, Tucker scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns on runs of 2 and 32 yards.

The Panthers return to Southwestern Athletic Conference play next Saturday at Jackson State.

Texas Southern drops tough SWAC matchup against Jackson State

HOUSTON, Texas -- Texas Southern coach Michael Haywood said he saw the Tigers' loss on Saturday to Jackson State coming. He felt the Tigers hadn't prepared properly during the week to come away with a win.

Jackson State held off the Tigers 21-13 at BBVA Compass Stadium, handing the Tigers their fourth loss in seven games. Saturday's eight-point margin of defeat is TSU's largest of the season.

Homecoming heartbreak for Morgan, NCCU pulls away 21-17

BALTIMORE, Maryland -- Morgan State had it in the palm of their hands.

But North Carolina Central had the answer when needed when backup quarterback Naiil Ramadan connected with Jalen Wilkes on a 16-yard touchdown pass with 3:59 left in their 21-17 win over the Bears at Hughes Stadium during Homecoming. This marked the Bears' second straight homecoming loss.

Morgan State head coach Fred T. Farrier summarized the loss.

"We got to find a way to finish a game and play 60 minutes," said Farrier. "Whether it's DeAndre [Harris] or Chris [Andrews] at quarterback, we can't turn the ball over. We can't make mistakes in critical situations against a great football team. We just made too many mistakes."

It didn't take long for NCCU (6-2, 5-0 MEAC) to get on the board as Malcolm Bell found a wide open Lavontis Smith for a 38-yard touchdown pass with 13:15 left. That put the Eagles up 7-0.

On the Bears' 1st possession, Chris Andrews was intercepted by Reggie Hunter who returned it to the Bears' 20. Four plays later, Dorrel McClain ran the ball into the end zone from two yards out with 10:31 left. It helped extend the Eagles' advantage to 14-0. That was one of three MSU turnovers in this game.

MSU answered back when Andrews completed a 12-yard TD pass to Ricky Fisk with 5:02 left in the 1st quarter. The extra point by Alex Raya cut the deficit to 14-7.

The Bears capitalized on a fumbled punt by NCCU's Mike Jones that was recovered by MSU's Ian McBorrough. One play later, Eric Harrell, who ran for a career high 121 yards on the day, recorded a seven yard TD run. With the extra point, the game was tied at 14 with 5:45 left in the second quarter.

The next possession by NCCU, quarterback Malcolm Bell was hit by safety Darius Johnson and fumbled the ball. Cornerback Delonta Hall recovered it at the NCCU 38 with 3:08 left in 2nd quarter. Bell was helped off the field with a possible concussion. But the turnover amounted into zero points for the Bears as Raya's 54-yard field goal attempt was blocked by NCCU's Alden McClellon.

NCCU's backup quarterback Naiil Ramadan was inserted into the ballgame and had his first pass attempt intercepted by Malachi Washington and returned to the NCCU 29. Raya ended up converting a 40-yard field goal at the halftime gun to give the Bears a 17-14 lead.

Not much happened in the second half. But the gusting winds determined a lot in this game. It came down to a short 18-yard punt into the 25-35 mile per hour wind.

Antonio Brown forced a fumble by DeAndre Harris that was recovered by Nolan Corpening at the NCCU 41 with 2:22 left.

Morgan State (2-4, 2-2 MEAC) stopped the Eagles on the ensuing drive. Then on the Bears' drive, Harris' pass was intercepted by Reggie Hunter at the MSU 41 with 22 seconds left to put the game away.

"We got to make sure our kids understand, game plan wise, where their eyes need to be in terms of what we're throwing and where the ball should go at times," Farrier said about taking care of the football. "Fumbles... we do a ball security circuit every day and we got to make sure those guys understand the importance of that. We got to continue to emphasize that as coaches."

Morgan State will attempt to improve on their performance next week as they hit the road to take on Norfolk State.
