Jackson State Rutland pushing Oliver

By David Brandt, Clarion Ledger

With less than two weeks left until Jackson State’s season opener against Delta State, the starting quarterback spot still appears up for grabs.

Tray Rutland, a sophomore transfer from Mississippi State, is battling senior incumbent Jimmy Oliver. Coach Rick Comegy said both have played well during the first few weeks of practice.

Though Oliver has been commonly listed as the starter on the depth chart, Rutland had overtaken Oliver on one version of the chart seen this morning.
But Comegy said no decisions have been made.

“I really wouldn’t look too much into the depth chart,” Comegy said. “We’ve been having some spirited debates as coaches and moving people around all the time. Both have played well and we’ve got a decision to make. We just want the best person on the field at all times.”

Oliver passed for more than 1,900 yards and 14 touchdowns last season as Jackson State posted its first winning season since 2002. Rutland played in five games for Mississippi State last season, throwing for 151 yards.

CLARK OUT, OWENS BACK

Defensive tackle Corey Clark missed his fourth consecutive day of practice. Comegy said Clark is working on a combination of academic and personal problems, though he wouldn’t elaborate.

“We still expect him back soon,” Comegy said. “Corey’s got a lot on his plate back home and then he’s got some other things to take care of also.”

With Clark out, coaches are considering a variety of moves, including moving senior Idrees Abdur-Rashied to defensive tackle and sliding Daniel Brooks down from linebacker to defensive end.

Senior defensive tackle Jamile Owens returned to the defensive line on Monday after sitting out a week with a shoulder injury.

“He’s been up and down so far this fall,” Comegy said. “It’s good to have him back with us. Now we’re just waiting for him to show us something.”

Owens played in nine games last season, finishing with 14 tackles including two for a loss.
