FAMU basketball update: Townsend announces search committee

By Heath A. Smith, DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER

Florida A&M Athletic Director Nelson Townsend said today that he would like to hire a new men's basketball coach by Sept. 15.

Townsend released the names of the members of the search committee that will help him find the new coach to replace Mike Gillespie Sr., who was fired a week ago.

“The makeup of this committee will best represent the various interests of the institution and our base of support as we move forward with this search process,” Townsend said in a released statement.

FAMU Faculty Athletic Representative William Ravenell will chair the seven-member committee. The other appointees to the search committee are: Sen. Al Lawson, FAMU Director of Alumni Affairs Carmen Cummings-Martin, FAMU Vice President for Student Affairs Roland Gaines, FAMU Director of Equal Opportunity Programs Carrie Gavin, journalism assistant professor Valerie Wright and senior forward Akini Adkins.

The men's basketball coach position is currently being advertised and all inquiries should be directed to the Office of Human Resources at FAMU.
