Jackson State quarterback Tray Rutland has been on campus for only a few months, but the sophomore gets ribbed by his teammates like an old friend.

As Rutland was doing an interview just after practice on Monday night, several of his teammates felt the need to chime in about his greatness.

"Tray Rutland's the best there ever was - a legend," shouts one player.

"I hope someday I can be like Tray Rutland," yells another.

Rutland, a Mississippi State transfer, just grins and claims his new teammates are crazy.

But there's no question he's fitting in well, both on and off the field.

"It's been even better than I imagined," Rutland said. "I've been out here getting ahold of the offense and having fun."

JSU coach Rick Comegy has already said the starting quarterback job is Jimmy Oliver's to lose, and the senior appears to have solidified his spot by having a great first week of camp.

But Rutland hasn't been far behind, flinging left-handed rockets all over the field. Rutland's consistency lags behind Oliver's for the moment, but offensive coordinator James Woody said it gets better by the day.

"He's doing everything we've asked," Woody said. "He had a decent scrimmage on Saturday and looked better today."

The quarterback position is still four-deep after sophomore William Brack decided to stay with the team, Woody said. The sophomore had pondered transferring and sat out a few practices, but was back on the field on Monday. Junior Joseph Hawkins has also seen time under center.

RUNNING MAN

Running back Lavarius Giles flashed his considerable talent again during a full contact drill on Monday night, running 70 yards for a touchdown on a sweep to the right side.

Giles, who won the 100- and 200-meter titles at the Southwestern Athletic Conference track meet in the spring, is most likely the fastest man on JSU's roster and raved after practice about the improvement on the offensive line.

"I'll be honest - last year it was pretty hard to find running room," Giles said. "But this year the line is much, much better. I think all of the running backs will benefit."

INJURY REPORT

Offensive linemen Eric Jones (shoulder) and Michael Harness (knee) both sat out practice on Monday night. Offensive line coach Bruce Johnson said neither injury was serious. . . . Tight end Marcel Frost continues to work into playing shape after rehabbing his broken leg.
