Dover, DE --- The 2007 Delaware State University volleyball season gets underway tomorrow (Friday) at the Missouri State Tournament in Springfield, MO. The Hornets will take on Sacramento State at 10:00 a.m., then return to the court at 5:00 p.m. to battle UMKC (Missouri-Kansas City). Delaware State will wrap up the tournament with contests against Missouri State and Tulsa on Saturday. This will be the Hornets’ first meeting against each team.

Fourth-year head coach Renee Arnold returns five letterwinners from last year’s squad, which posted an overall record of 11-23. The Hornets were 5-5 in the MEAC a year ago. DSU is led by seniors Ayana Dyette (OH), Kinga Muszynski (OH) and Laura Huculak (S). Dyette, a 2006 All-MEAC Second Team selection, was seventh in the league in kills (367) and kills-per-game (3.36) last season. Muszynski is DSU’s career leader with 758 digs, while Huculak is the team’s most versatile player. Sophomore Cassandra Joyner (OH/MB) was second on the team in kills last season. The 2007 squad also features perhaps the best crop of newcomers in recent team history. Freshmen Shannon Anderson (S), Ashley Herman (MB) and Sarah Wheatcroft (OH) were standout players in Canada, while Erica Tajchman (OH) led her high school to back-to-back state championship game appearances in Nebraska. Dover area product Princess Puckett (MB) is also new to the team this season.

Friday’s first opponent, Sacramento State, is one of the nation’s top teams. Also nicknamed Hornets, SSU was 30-6 overall and 15-1 in the Big Sky Conference in 2006. The Hornets received votes in the preseason 25 poll of Division I volleyball teams. UMKC was 7-23 overall and 4-8 in the Summit League last season.

Saturday opponent Tulsa posted a 27-7 overall record and 13-3 mark in Conference USA a year ago, while host Missouri State was 27-9 last season.

After competing in the Xavier University Tournament next weekend (Aug. 31-Sep. 1), Delaware State will play its home opener September 4 against Delaware.
