Alabama State VB draws top-seeded Stanford in NCAA first round

VB_Team_NCAAMONTGOMERY, Alabama -- For the third-straight season and the fifth time in the past six, Alabama State heard its name called for the opening round of the NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament Sunday night, eliciting an enthusiastic response after drawing top-seeded Stanford.

Alabama State (23-17) and Stanford (28-1) will be meeting for the first time on Friday and the two will be joined by Loyola Marymount. (20-9) and Duke (16-11) at the Stanford Regional.

"It was music to my ears and I think it is just great for the girls to have a different experience," Alabama State head coach Penny Lucas-White said.

The Lady Hornets had faced Florida in their past three trips to the tournament.

"It is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I think they are going to enjoy the experience and just be present in the moment and give it their all. It is amazing," Lucas-White said.

Thirty-two conferences were awarded an automatic qualification, while the remaining 32 positions were filled with at-large selections to complete the bracket.

The top 16 teams were seeded nationally and placed within four regions. In addition to No. 1 seed Stanford, Minnesota was tabbed as the two seed, Illinois grabbed the third seed while BYU rounded out the top four.

The Lady Hornets and Stanford will start at 9 pm EST/7 pm PST on Friday at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif.
