BOCA RATON, Florida -- Florida Atlantic has parted ways with wide receivers coach Gary Harrell following Saturday night’s 27-24 loss to Charlotte at FAU Stadium, according to multiple sources.

Harrell was told his two-year contract would not be renewed after the Owls finished the year 5-7, and had a season filled with promise end without a postseason bowl game berth on Saturday. They lost to the 49ers on a 56-yard field goal with 25 seconds remaining.

An FAU spokesperson was reached on Sunday, but had no comment.

Harrell first joined FAU in January 2017 after the Owls hired Lane Kiffin as head coach in December of 2016.

Before landing in Boca Raton, Harrell spent five years as head coach at Howard University, his alma mater. He also had assistant coaching stints at Bowie State, Morgan State, Florida A&M, Texas Southern and got his start as receivers coach at Howard from 2002-2004.
