WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Howard University women's basketball head coach Ty Grace has announced the signings of two players, Makayla Minett and Iyanna Warren, for the 2018-19 early signing period.
"I'm very excited to have Makayla and Iyanna join our program! They will be great additions to an experienced team next season. They both bring a wealth of talent and skill that will only make our team better."
Minett is a 6'3" senior forward out of Pearl High School in Pearl, MS. Before transferring to Pearl for her senior season, she played at Pelahatchie High School. There she averaged 17.2 points and 14.8 rebounds. Currently she is coached by Jason Kennedy at Pearl High School. Additionally, Minett played for the successful Mac Irvin Lady Fire club team. Minett was named to the Mississippi Clarion Ledger Dandy Dozen, which recognizes the top 12 players in the state of Mississippi.
"Makayla's size and mobility gives her tremendous advantage against other post players. Her ability to protect the rim , as well as hit the 15-17 foot shot will certainly allow her to be a force and matchup problem on the floor. I can't wait to coach her next season!"
Local Maryland talent Iyanna Warren is a 5'4" point guard coming from Oxon Hill High School where she averaged 15.6 ppg, 4.9 rpg and 4.7 apg. She is coached by Devone Williams. Warren also played on the AAU circuit with Team Durant. She received Honorable Mention for the D.C.-area's 2018 Winter All-Met Team. Last season she led Oxon Hill to a 22-1 season in which she contributed 271 points.
"Iyanna is a shifty guard and playmaker. Her ability to create for others is a great asset that she will flourish in. She has the ability to score off the bounce and knock shots down from the outside. Iyanna is a triple threat player who will be a great floor general for our team!"
Minett and Warren who are also high achieving students in the classroom have exceptionally high grade point averages amid their basketball obligations. "These young ladies are great examples of the type of student-athletes we want at Howard University. They excel on the court and more importantly in the classroom. Both Iyanna and Makayla boast a 4.0 GPA, or better. You can't ask for a better duo."
