HSSU Hornets Offense Frustrates MMU Mustangs

SAINT LOUIS, Missouri -- The Hornets went out before the break in style as they downed the Mustangs of Mount Mercy University (Iowa) 74-51.

Jordan May (SO/St. Louis, MO) led all scorers as she tied her career high of 15 points on 6-9 shooting. Kambri Davison (SO/Tulsa, OK) chipped in 12 points of her own while Jay'la Davis recorded 10 points. Takesia Barnes (SO/Memphis, TN) led HSSU with eight rebounds while Davis dished out a game high seven assists.

Harris-Stowe jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead just two minutes into the game after Tarsheia Page (SO/Chicago, IL) drained a three from the wing. Buckets from Surina Finnie (FR/Memphis, TN), Sebit Gatluak (JR/Des Moines, IA), and Tyler Maufas (FR/Saint Louis, MO) would help extend the Hornets lead to 17-7 after the first 10 minutes of play.

May took control in this quarter, scoring eight of her 15 points. She would push the Hornets lead to 40-18 at the buzzer with an offensive rebound and put-back.

The break didn't slow Harris-Stowe down; extending their lead to 33 after a fast-break lay-up from Kierra Weir (SO/Springfield, IL).

The Mustangs attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Hornets 17-10 in the final 10 minutes. But, the comfortable lead secured the Hornets their second win of the season.

Harris-Stowe (2-2; 0-1 AMC) finished the game shooting 41% from the field and scoring 31 of their 74 points off Mount Mercy turnovers. As a team, they picked up a season high 43 rebounds and dished out 16 assists.

HSSU will be back in action next Tuesday when they travel to Columbia, MO to face off against the Cougars of Columbia College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
