Lady Bears & Trojans Advance to CIAA Volleyball Championship Finals

5389SALEM, Virginia  The 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Volleyball Championship Semi-Finals were held November 9, 2018 at the Salem Civic Center. Two teams swept their matches to claim stakes in the championship finals: the Trojans of Virginia State University and Lady Bears of Shaw University.
 
All-Conference Awards
 
The No. 1 North Virginia State edged No. 2 South Fayetteville State in three tight matches: 25-18, 25-21, and 25-16.  Leading the match in scoring were Trojans Kennedi Cannon and Jailyn Ivy, who earned 11 kills each. For the Broncos, Diamond Holmes took charge earning 8 kills while teammate Chynna Hunt added 7 to FSU’s efforts. Fayetteville State completed their season 15-12 overall.
 
Prior to the VSU vs. FSU 5:00 PM semi-finals match, the CIAA awarded Volleyball Coach of the Year to Broncos Head Coach Reeshemah Johnson.
 
During the 7:00 PM semi-finals match, the No. 1 South Shaw Lady Bears and No. 3 South Winston-Salem State Rams went head-to-head to compete for an appearance in the championship title match. Shaw set the pace and prevailed over Winston-Salem State in a 3-0 set sweep: 25-23, 25-23, and 25-22.
 
Shaw’s Keveesha Wattley led the match with 14 kills and 2 blocks while WSSU’s Danyale Berry finished close behind with 13 kills and 7 digs. Defensively Lady Bears’ pair Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez and Karla Sosa dominated with 8 digs each. The Rams conclude their season 16-15 overall.
 
The Shaw Lady Bears and Virginia State Trojans will meet tomorrow at 7:00 PM at Salem Civic Center to battle for the conference championship title. The event is free and will stream live on TheCIAASN.com.
