Turnovers Spell Trouble in Cumberlands Patriot Loss at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Alabama -- UC Women's Basketball is off to a good start in the 2018-2019 season. At 5-1 on the year, the only loss for the Patriots was to the Tornadoes of Talladega College. On Thursday, UC would travel to Talladega to attempt to avenge that early-season loss. Unfortunately, Cumberlands was unable to do that as the Tornadoes' defense swirled on the night as they would upend the Patriots 87-60. The loss moves UC to 5-2 overall on the season.

WBB Rhodes, Jasmine 3Two minutes into the first quarter, the teams traded possessions back and forth as UC trailed 6-4. Talladega would then go on a 16-2 run over the next five and a half minutes that included nine Patriot turnovers as TC would jump ahead 22-6. A pair of baskets from Jasmine Rhodes would make it 22-10 Tornadoes after one quarter of play. The second quarter was much improved by UC. Talladega would extend their lead to 15 at 37-22 with three minutes to play in the half. The Patriots would make a push as they closed out the half on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to six at 37-31.

The third quarter was a tough one for the Patriots to swallow. Twelve turnovers in the third quarter would plague the Patriots as they would be outscored 23-9 in the frame as the Tornadoes would extend their lead to 20 at 60-40. The last quarter was also an edge given to Talladega as they would push the lead all the way to 31 before finishing the game with a 27 point win over the Patriots 87-60.

A pair of Patriots led the way in scoring on the night as Jasmine Rhodes and Shayla Simpson both tallied 13 points in the game. Rhodes added seven rebounds and a pair of assists while Simpson chipped in with six rebounds. Talladega's Brijanee Moore tallied a triple-double with 15 points, 11 assists, and ten steals on the night. Diamond Jolly led all scorers in the game with 20 points to go with her 14 rebounds.

UC shot 36.8% from the floor in the contest while going just 3-15 from beyond the arc. Half of UC's points came off the bench in the loss only scoring 11 points inside the paint. Talladega would shoot 43.2% from the field while garnering 50 points in the key and 39 points off UC's 37 turnovers.

Cumberlands returns to action on Saturday, November 17th as they face the Royals of Johnson University of Tennessee. Tip-off is set for 11 am. This will be the first meeting ever between the two schools.
