NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana won every set, including two tiebreakers, in a 9-0 men's tennis victory Friday against Texas A&M-Texarkana.
The XULA men (4-2), ranked third in the NAIA, won for the fourth time in their last five dual matches. The Gold Rush and Gold Nuggets will travel to Madison, Miss., for Saturday matches against Gulf Coast Athletic Conference opponents Rust and Tougaloo. XULA will play Rust at 9 a.m., with Tougaloo to follow immediately afterward. Venue will be The Racquet Club at Cypress Lake.
XULA's Santiago Perez, Shaikh Abdullah, Samir Chikhaoui, Gabriel Niculescu, Chris Anders and Pierre Andrieu all won doubles and singles matches.
"Today was a good bounce back day for us," XULA coach Alan Green said. "We played some good doubles and we had some dominant performances from the bottom half of the singles lineup. Texarkana is an under-ranked team in my opinion. Those guys are good."
The Eagles (3-3), a sixth-year program, were among "others receiving votes" and in 27th place in the most recent NAIA coaches poll Feb. 26. The next ranking will be announced Tuesday.
It was the first-ever meeting between the Gold Rush and the Eagles. They'll also meet March 31 in Pensacola, Fla.
