Multi-qualifier Wray receives GCAC weekly award

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Shalysa Wray is the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week in women's track for March 11-17, the GCAC announced Tuesday.

Wray — a freshman from Waterford Portmore, Jamaica, and a native of Georgetown, Grand Cayman — set a XULA record of 56.57 seconds Saturday in the 400-meter dash at the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette, La. That time also was an A-qualifying mark for the NAIA National Championships in May.

Wray finished fifth in the event and was faster than 19 NCAA Division I runners.

Wray has qualified for nationals in three events through the first two meets of the outdoor season. The other events are the 400 and 1,600 relays.

Next for the XULA track teams will be the Southern Miss Invitational March 30 at Hattiesburg, Miss.
