XULA captures 5 top-10 spots in ITA national rankings

Xavier University of Louisiana tennisNEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana holds seven positions, five in the top 10, in the Oracle ITA Collegiate Tennis NAIA Rankings announced Thursday.
     

XULA's nationally ranked student-athletes are:
     •  Mariia Borodii, second in women's singles and third in doubles with Farah Baklouti.
     •  Charlene Goreau, sixth in women's singles.
     •  Angela Charles-Alfred, 25th in women's singles.
     •  Santiago Perez, third in men's singles and seventh in doubles with Shaikh Abdullah.
     •  Abdullah, 12th in men's singles.
     

In the South Region rankings, Borodii, Goreau and Charles-Alfred are 2-6-12 in women's singles, and Perez and Abdullah are 3-7 in men's singles. Borodii and Baklouti are second in doubles, and Perez and Abdullah are fourth.
     
Of those six players, Goreau is the lone senior. Perez is a freshman, and Abdullah, Borodii, Baklouti and Charles-Alfred are sophomores.
     

The Gold Rush (6-4) and Gold Nuggets (8-3) will compete indoors the next two days against NAIA opponents in the Midwest. They'll play Northwestern Ohio at noon EDT Friday in Lima, Ohio, and Indiana Wesleyan at 10:30 a.m. EDT Saturday in Greentown, Ind.
     

Next week the XULA women will play three times at home, and the men will play twice. Both teams will play SCAD Atlanta at 3 p.m. Monday at XULA Tennis Center.
