Wray, Williams, Buchanan repeat as GCAC honorees

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Shalysa WrayCalah Williams and Shane Buchanan are repeat winners of Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week awards in track and field. All were honored for performances April 1-7.
     

All three won for the second consecutive week, with Wray winning in women's track for the third time this season and Williams winning in women's field for the third time in her career. Buchanan won in men's track.
     

Wray, a freshman from Waterford Portmore, Jamaica, and a graduate of St. Jago School, produced an NAIA A-qualifying time of 11.87 seconds Saturday in the 100-meter dash at the McNeese Spring Time Classic in Lake Charles, La. Wray finished second out of 18 sprinters and became the first XULA woman in three years to finish in less than 12 seconds.
     
Wray also anchored XULA's second A-qualifying time this season in the 400 relay. The Gold Nuggets finished second in 46.62. Wray has qualified for nationals in five events.
     

Williams, a sophomore from Baton Rouge, La., and a graduate of Woodlawn High School, finished ninth at McNeese in the discus (34.05 meters/111 feet, 8 1/2 inches) and 12th in the shot put (9.90 meters/32 feet, 5 3/4 inches).
     

Buchanan, a freshman from Kingston, Jamaica, and a graduate of Kingston College, produced his first collegiate victory when he ran XULA's fastest 5,000-meter time — 16:18.67 — in six years. He placed eighth in the 1,500 in 4:12.60.
     

Next for XULA will be the GCAC Championships April 17-18 at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans.
