XULA receives all four GCAC weekly awards

Xavier University of Louisiana track and fieldNEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana won all four Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week awards in track and field for March 25-31.

XULA's recipients are Shalysa Wray in women's track, Calah Williams in women's field, Shane Buchanan in men's track and Edward Angel in men's field.

Wray, a freshman from Waterford Portmore, Jamaica, and a graduate of St. Jago High School, broke the school record in the 400-meter dash for the second consecutive meet. Her time of 55.27 seconds placed her third in that event at the Southern Miss Invitational and gave her the No. 3 time on the NAIA's 2019 outdoor list. Wray won the 200 in 24.81 seconds and is No. 7 on the NAIA season list.

Wray's 200 time was an NAIA B-qualifying mark. She has qualified for the national meet in four events; the others are the 400, 400 relay and 1,600 relay.

Williams, a sophomore from Baton Rouge, La., and a graduate of Woodlawn High School, finished 14th at Southern Miss in the discus (27.76 meters/91 feet, 1 inch) and shot put (9.72 meters/31 feet, 10 3/4 inches). She is a GCAC weekly winner for the first time this season and the second time in her career.

Buchanan, a freshman from Kingston, Jamaica, and a graduate of Kingston College, produced two top-4 finishes. He was second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9 minutes, 46.13 seconds — he was the first collegiate finisher in that race — and he was fourth in the 1,500 in 4:06.29. This is Buchanan's first GCAC weekly award.

Angel, a sophomore from Fulshear, Texas, and a graduate of Seven Lakes High School, won his first GCAC award of the season and fourth of his career. He tied for second in the high jump and cleared 1.93 meters/6 feet, 4 inches. An NAIA All-American a year ago, Angel has finished second or first in every meet this year.

XULA will compete Saturday in the McNeese Spring Time Classic at Lake Charles, La. Field events will start at 9 a.m., and the first track event is scheduled for 10 a.m. It will be XULA's fourth meet of the outdoor season.
