Dallas-area guard becomes second Gold Rush signee

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana has signed Cameron Wells of Murphy, Texas, and Wylie High School to an athletic scholarship in men's basketball.

Wells, a 6-foot-1 guard, was a four-year varsity starter at Wylie and helped the Pirates qualify for the state playoffs three times, including the past two seasons. As a senior Wells averaged 12 points, seven rebounds and 1.7 steals per game for a 27-7 team.

Wells was academic all-district four years, first-team all-district as a senior and second-team all-district as a junior. He was team captain and chosen his team's MVP his senior year.

"Cameron was a big-time defender for us," Wylie head coach Stephen Pearce said. "He is a high academic and high character young man. He plays at an even keel. He's just a good person."

Murphy and Wylie are in Collin County in the Dallas suburbs.

Wells will major in business at XULA. Both of his parents and an aunt and uncle are XULA graduates.

Wells is second Gold Rush signee for next season. The other newcomer is guard TJ Jones of Opelousas, La., and Lafayette Christian Academy. Jones signed in November.

XULA was 18-14 this past season and reached the semifinals of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
