NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana has earned three more weekly track and field awards from the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, with first-time winner Hillary Smith joining multiple winners Edward Angel and Shane Buchanan.
The GCAC Athlete of the Week awards are for April 22-28.
Smith, a sophomore from Arlington, Texas, and a graduate of Martin High School, was cited in women's field after a 10th-place finish in the triple jump at the Southern Miss Open in Hattiesburg. Miss. Her best jump of 10.10 meters/35 feet, 1 3/4 inches is the second best of her collegiate career.
Angel, a sophomore from Fulshear, Texas, and a graduate of Seven Lakes High School, won the men's field award after an eighth-place finish in the high jump and a season-best 2.00 meters/6 feet, 6 3/4 inches. The GCAC award is Angel's third this season and sixth of his career;
Buchanan, a freshman from Kingston, Jamaica, and a graduate of Kingston College, won in men's track for the fourth time this season. He scored his seventh victory this season, winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase by 20 seconds. His time was 10 minutes, 5.14 seconds. Four of the other five runners in the race were from NCAA Division I. XULA is a longtime NAIA member.
Buchanan's four weekly awards are the most in a season by a XULA man in track or field.
