NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Angela Charles-Alfred and Lailaa Bashir earned a pair of victories Sunday against seeded Georgia Gwinnett teams to win the women's doubles title of the ITA NAIA South Regional Championships at XULA Tennis Center.

Charles-Alfred and Bashir, the tournament's No. 2 seed, beat third-seeded Tereza Koplova and Gabrielle Robinson 8-1 in a morning semifinal, then rallied in both sets to defeat top-seeded Maria Genovese and Madeline Bosnjak 6-4, 6-4 in the afternoon final.

Charles-Alfred and Bashir trailed Genovese and Bosnjak 4-2 in the first set and 4-1 in the second.

The regional title qualified the XULA team for the ITA Cup Oct. 17-20 at Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Ga.

Charles-Alfred is a junior in her third season at XULA. Bashir is a freshman. It's their second title together during this semester; they won the A-flight of the HBCU National Championships in Atlanta the previous weekend.

XULA's other entry still contending in the main draw, second-seeded Santiago Perez, lost 6-1, 6-4 to Georgia Gwinnett's third-seeded Federico Bonacia in the men's singles semifinals. Perez had beaten Grizzlies in the previous two rounds, including defending champion Mika Kosonen in a third-set super-tiebreaker during Saturday's quarterfinals.

The other champions of this event:

Men's doubles — Georgia Gwinnett's top-seeded Bonacia and Valentino Caratini defeated Daniil Klimov-Dominik Fritsche, William Carey, 6-4, 6-4

Men's singles consolation — Joe Klokow, Point, defeated Tiger Cheung, Loyola (N.O.), 8-4

Women's singles consolation — Ronja Kramer, Brenau, defeated Sofia Villalobos, Point, 8-4

Women's singles main draw — Genovese, seeded first, will play third-seeded Elyse Lavender of Brenau for the title Tuesday at Brenau University in Gainesville, Ga.

Men's singles main draw — Bonacia will play teammate Jose Dugo for the title Tuesday at Georgia Gwinnett in Lawrenceville, Ga.

Because of travel and academic considerations, the Georgia teams opted to play their singles finals in their home state. Brenau won a coin flip for the right to play host to the women's match.
