NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's 2019 collection of Gulf Coast Athletic Conference weekly volleyball awards reached 12 when juniors Kayla Black and Jennifer Torres were honored for Oct. 7-13.Black is GCAC Attacker of the Week for the second time this season and the ninth time in her career. Perez, in her first season at XULA, is Defender of the Week for the third time, all in the last four weeks, and the second consecutive week.
Black hit .271 with 48 kills, 38 digs, four aces and five blocks in three matches at the UST Invitational in Houston. Against Huston-Tillotson she tied her school record for kills in a match with 27. Black set a school record for 20-kill matches in a career — she has six.
Torres, from Jacksonville, Fla., had 56 digs and averaged 4.67 digs per set. She also produced six aces and seven assists. Torres had a career- and match-high 27 digs against Wiley — No. 13 on XULA's all-time match list — and a match-high 15 digs against St. Thomas (Texas). She has an active streak of six matches with double-figure digs.
The Gold Nuggets won Defender of the Week each of the last five weeks.
XULA — 20-5 overall, 9-0 in the GCAC and closing in on a ninth consecutive regular-season championship — will play GCAC home matches Saturday against SUNO at 11 a.m. and Tougaloo at 6 p.m. at the Convocation Center. There will be two additional GCAC matches at XULA that day: Dillard vs. Tougaloo at 1 p.m. and Dillard vs. SUNO at 4 p.m.
