Gold Nuggets outlast Wiley in UST Classic opener

HOUSTON — Xavier University of Louisiana received contributions from many Friday in a 25-15, 16-25, 25-16, 25-21 victory against Wiley in the opening match of the UST Volleyball Classic.

The Gold Nuggets (19-4) stretched their win streak to 11 — tied for the third longest in the program's 12-year history.

Xavier University of Louisiana women's volleyballFor the first time this season, six Gold Nuggets reached five kills in the same match. Kayla Black had 12, Vivica Price-Spraggins 11, Ema Causevic nine, Maya Smith a career-high eight, Jaida Dowd seven and Bria Mayes five. Price-Spraggins hit .611 with no errors in 18 attacks. Mayes hit .400, Smith .375 and Causevic .353.

Torres became the third Gold Nugget this season to reach 25 digs in a match — Black and Si Si Mitchell did it in August — and XULA needed every dig in a match where both teams hit well. The Gold Nuggets hit .330 — .469 over the final two sets — and Wiley hit .261. It was the first time in six seasons that the Gold Nuggets and their opponent reached .250.

"We kept our composure when tested," XULA head coach Pat Kendrick said. "Viv was steady hitting .611 with no errors. Jenny was very solid in service reception and defense with 27 digs. Our setters, Eva and Tiffany, distributed the ball well."

Le Guillou had 33 assists, and Tiffany Phillips had 16.

Tinoi Martin had 14 kills and 11 digs — her third double-double of the season — and hit .281 for the Wildcats (12-4). Teleze Collier had seven kills, Tiyanna Johnson had six kills and three blocks, and Alexia Souza hit .714 with five kills, 33 assists and two blocks.
