She did it! Keisha Lance Bottoms has defeated Republican Rick Jackson to become Georgia’s first Black governor and its first woman governor. An Atlanta native, daughter of R&B singer Major Lance and proud Florida A&M University graduate, Bottoms earned her law degree at Georgia State before building a career as an attorney, judge, and Atlanta City Council member. She went on to become Atlanta’s 60th mayor, leading her hometown through the pandemic and the racial justice protests of 2020, before serving as a senior adviser to President Joe Biden. Now, the woman whose story began in Atlanta is preparing to lead Georgia. An HBCU graduate. A mother of four. A Black woman whose journey has taken her from serving her neighborhood to making history for her state. We’re celebrating the journey, the perseverance, and every little Black girl who can look at this moment and see a possibility for herself. Congratulations, Governor-elect Keshia Lance Bottoms!
