Norfolk State takes MEAC track titles

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Norfolk State's men's and women's track and field team's won the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.

The Norfolk State women tallied 140 points to win their first MEAC Outdoor title, second overall, since 2001. The championship also marks the first time that both men's and women's programs won an outdoor title during the same year since 2001.

Defending champion Hampton finished second with 139 points while North Carolina A&T finished third with 124 points. S.C. State was fourth with 73 points.

Spartan Women Win 1st MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Title Since 2001

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Six event victories Saturday propelled the Spartan women’s track & field team to its first MEAC outdoor championship since 2001 at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

The Spartan women edged Hampton by one point, giving NSU a sweep of the men’s and women’s outdoor titles – the first time since 2001 a MEAC team has accomplished the feat. That year, it was also the Spartans who achieved that accomplishment.

Coach Ronda Berard was named the MEAC Outdoor Most Outstanding Coach for leading the Spartans to victory.

Spartan Men Clinch 6th Straight MEAC Track Sweep

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Norfolk State men’s track & field team breezed to its sixth straight MEAC outdoor championship to pull off a sixth straight indoor-outdoor sweep on Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

The Spartans tallied 162 points and scored in 15 of the weekend’s 19 events to top second-place Maryland Eastern Shore by 25 points. NSU men's coach Kenneth Giles was named the MEAC Outdoor Most Outstanding Coach.

The Spartans posted two first-place finishes on Saturday. Sean Holston clocked his best time ever in the 400 meters, running a 46.00 to win the gold medal. Aramis Massenburg followed up his PR in Friday’s 110 hurdle semis with another strong effort in the final, running a 13.89 to take the gold medal in that event.

Florida A&M track and field team gets boost from Rattlers' football players

Brian Tyms wanted to be a better basketball player in high school, so he ran track at Fort Lauderdale's Dillard High School. Hundreds of miles away, Jeremy Tillman figured that being on the Brandon High School track team would improve his football game.

Both Tyms and Tillman are now wide receivers on the Florida A&M football team, and not surprisingly, they're on the Rattlers' track and field team as well. Obviously, they want the cardiovascular advantage that running and jumping gives them, but their reason for being on the team runs a little deeper.

They're there because of pride and a desire to help the Rattlers to at least a top-five finish at this weekend's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships. Tillman's specialty is the sprints, and Tyms competes in the high jump.

Virgin Islands athletes have strong outings at MEAC Track Championships

Five Virgin Islanders from five different colleges competed at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference indoor track and field championships last weekend in Landover, Md.

Delaware State University junior Leslie Murray and Florida A&M senior Leon Hunt walked away with first-place medals around their necks, and Murray was a member of a record-setting relay team.

"It was a great experience. All of us have come from different programs and it was cool to have us all under the same roof going up against the best from our conference," said Leon Hunt, who is ranked 14th among the nation's best long jumpers. "It was like we were going against rival schools and friends. It was very competitive."

Hunt set a personal best in the long jump earlier this month at the Niswonger Invitational track meet, when he leaped 7.75 meters (25 feet, 4 inches). Hunt was ranked among the conference's elite for most of the indoor season and finished with 7.69 on Saturday.

Hampton Lady Pirates Win MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships

LANDOVER, Md. – The Hampton University women’s track & field team ran away with the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex.

The Lady Pirates have won eight of the last nine MEAC indoor championships, including seven straight from 2003-09. Hampton finished with a meet- and school-record 188.5 points, while Norfolk State finished second with 102.5 points.

Head coach Maurice Pierce was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Coach, while freshman Teiara Denmark (Virginia Beach, Va.) was named Most Outstanding Field Performer and senior Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) shared Most Outstanding Runner honors with Maryland Eastern Shore’s Cynthia Anais.

“Our freshmen stepped up to the plate,” Pierce said. “On top of Racquel’s performances, with our freshmen, it all came together today.”

NSU Men Win 6th MEAC Indoor Track Title in a Row

LANDOVER, Md. – The Norfolk State men’s track team won its sixth straight MEAC indoor track & field title on Saturday at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex, breaking its own meet record with 200 points.

Combined with their streak of five straight MEAC outdoor championships, the Spartan men have now won the last 11 MEAC track championships that have been contested. They easily topped the 2010 team’s previous meet record of 188 points.

Junior Josef Tessema was named the MEAC Men’s Most Outstanding Runner. He earned victories Saturday in the mile and 3,000 meters to add to his wins Friday in the 5,000 and as part of the distance medley relay team. He had a hand in 32.5 points during the weekend, more than three entire men’s teams.

Spartan head coach Kenneth Giles was named the MEAC Men’s Most Outstanding Coach for the 11th time in his tenure as NSU track coach.

Track and Field Set to Participate in MEAC Indoor Championships

NORFOLK, VA – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) will host its Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships, Thursday-Saturday, February 17-19, at the Prince George Sports Complex in Landover, Md.

The competition on February 17 at 1 p.m. with the women's weight throw followed by the men's weight throw at 2:30 p.m.

The championships will continue on Friday with the men's heptathlon and women's shot put competition at 9 a.m. Other field events on Friday's slate include the men's and women's long jump, the men's pole vault final, and the women's high jump. The afternoon continues with the men's and women's 800m run, 60m hurdles, 60m dash, 200m dash, and 400m dash. The men's and women's distance medley relay will round out the day's events.

Florida A&M's Leon Hunt has his eyes set on the 2012 Olympics

Leon Hunt has his eyes set on the 2012 Olympics. But before he punches his ticket for London, the St. Croix, Virgin Islands native wants to be the best college long jumper in the country.

He set a personal best last weekend at the Niswonger Invitational track meet at East Tennessee University when he leaped 7.75 meters (25 feet, 4 inches). The Florida A&M University senior won the event and is nationally ranked in the top 15 of all NCAA indoor long jump athletes.

"The rankings are updated almost every week, so you never know what's going to happen," Hunt said Monday after a workout in Tallahassee, Fla. "But I've been pretty happy with what I've done so far this indoor season."

According to USVI track and field team coach Wallace Williams, Hunt's leap last weekend set a territory record for the indoor long jump. Hunt set the previous record in 2009 and also holds the outdoor long jump record.
