AD's departure welcomed by Grambling State University family

Grambling, LA - There wasn't much of an attempt to hide the consensus opinion regarding Lin Dawson's resignation from his duties as Grambling State's athletics director. GSU alumni and fans are glad he's gone, and they've made the message loud and clear.

Usually when a coach or administrator leaves an athletic department, his departure is met with some boring comments about the hard work he put in for the betterment of the university.

Dawson's departure was met with brutal honesty. Head football coach Doug Williams — arguably the most important living figure in the Grambling family — said Dawson's departure was "in the best interest of the university." It seemed that Williams wanted to say more, but he chose to hold his tongue.

Jackie Hamilton, a GSU alum and the head football coach at Carroll, said, "I know ain't nobody gonna cry about it."

Grambling State locals honored for contributions

The Monroe-Ouachita Chapter of the Grambling State University National Alumni Association will host its eighth annual Evening with the GSU Athletic Department tonight at the Monroe Civic Center. Athletics Director Lin Dawson and head football coach Rod Broadway are expected to be on hand to discuss the upcoming season, and a selection of local alumni will be honored for their contributions to GSU: James "Shack" Harris, Delles Howell, Lee Fobbs.

The event begins at 6 p.m. in the Fort Miro Room, with a silent auction beginning at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $10. Door prizes will be given away, including Bayou Classic tickets and GSU football season tickets. Ezzard Burton, a former president of the Monroe-Ouachita Chapter, said the event drew a crowd of about 180 last year and raised about $4,000 for GSU athletics. He hopes for a turnout of over 200 this year.

New Grambling athletics director discusses his football scheduling philosphy

New Grambling athletics director Lin Dawson revealed a few of his thoughts on football scheduling during a meet-and-greet stop in Shreveport this week. Dawson, who has been the Grambling AD for four months, is researching the viability of playing a future game in Shreveport. He said he contacted SMU about the possibility.

“I think part of the reason we are here today is to explore options and relationships,” Dawson said. “We’re certainly open to playing. We want to go where our fans want to go. We have about 5-to-6,000 alumni in Shreveport. That would be very important to them.” A Shreveport game, though, would need to fit into the school’s scheduling philosophy.

Last year, Grambling traveled to Reno, Nev., to open its season against Football Bowl Subdivision member Nevada. The Tigers also played an in-state opponent with a visit to Northwestern State. “Our philosophy is, No. 1 to schedule competitive games,” Dawson said. “We want to be the best at competing at the highest level in our division. It’s important for us to beat the people we play against.
