49ers Draft Pick Curtis Holcomb: Phillip Adams Redux?

We continue our run through the 49ers 2011 NFL Draft picks as we check out Trent Baalke's comments about each player's film. Baalke broke down some tape and gave some background on each of the 49ers draft picks, giving the media a better idea of who some of these guys are and how they might fit in with the 49ers.

Today we check out the 49ers last draft pick, cornerback Curtis Holcomb of Florida A&M via Trent Baalke's film discussion.

In 2010 the 49ers drafted cornerback Phillip Adams out of South Carolina State with their final pick. A year later the49ers drafted Holcomb out of Florida A&M. Both schools are in the MEAC and based on the 49ers.com roster page, they're actually similar builds. I have no idea whether this means we're looking at similar players. Given their late round status, it can be difficult to get more details on such players. As Baalke says in the video in reference to Holcomb, "The guy Mel Kiper had to fumble through his stuff for cuz he wasn't rated."

The 5-foot-11, 192-pounder was a first-team All Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference selection at South Carolina State, leading the team as a senior with three interceptions. As a junior, he tied for first in the conference with five interceptions and returned 11 punts for two touchdowns.

Adams Doing It All Now: Pratice, Study, eye on Mom...

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - There are the long, sweltering days sprinting and conditioning in the sunny yet cool Northern California climate. Just as much study time is spent behind closed doors studying a playbook as thick and in-depth as a dictionary. Through it all, time is always made to keep in touch with his mother back in the Palmetto State still recuperating from injuries suffered in an October car accident.

This is the daily grind post-South Carolina State football for San Francisco 49er rookie defensive back Phillip Adams. Since getting selected in the seventh round, the Rock Hill native has found himself balancing the NFL business with adjusting to the differences in time zone, location and personal responsibilities. "I'm just working hard, just trying to stay on top of my game and learn everything that I can learn," Adams said.

South Carolina State Cornerback Phillip Adams Fits S.F. 49er's Tough Identity

Defensive Back Phillip Adams (7th Round, 224th overall) fills a need for the 49ers, who were hoping to come out of the draft with a cornerback. An All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference selection in 2009 at South Carolina State, Adams figures to challenge for a backup role as a rookie.

There's a common theme to the eight prospects selected by the San Francisco 49ers in this year's draft. "These players are guys who will hit you," coach Mike Singletary said Saturday. "When you look at the identity of the 49ers, I think every one of these guys that we pick fit the identity." Singletary is building a tough, physical squad in San Francisco, and the four players selected by the team Saturday to complete the draft definitely fit the mold.

They also fill needs as the 49ers selected power running back Anthony Dixon, blocking tight end Nate Byham and wide receiver/punt returner Kyle Williams in the sixth round, then added physical cornerback Phillip Adams with their final pick in round 7. Each comes to San Francisco with the type of attitude the 49ers have come to expect from their players. "I like to bloody noses," said Byham, a two-time All-Big East selection at the University of Pittsburgh who was considered one of the nation's best blocking tight ends last season. "I don't shy away from contact. I'm going into the hole and I'm trying to hit somebody. I'm trying to inflict pain when I'm in there as a tight end."

Former South Carolina State standout Adams ready to shine for pros

Former South Carolina State University Bulldogs cornerback Phillip Adams is playing in Texas vs. The Nation All-Stars Game, Sunday, February 7, 2010, at Sun Bowl Stadium, El Paso, Texas, 2 PM EST.

Phillip Adams has his eyes on the future today when he plays in the Texas Vs. The Nation All-Star Football Game at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas. The game will be broadcast nationally for those who have a satellite dish beginning at 2 p.m. Adams, a former standout in football and basketball at Rock Hill, sees the game as an opportunity for him to be drafted by an NFL team. Scouts attended practice all week, and Adams said several have shown a strong interest in his abilities.

“I feel like I’ve showcased my talents this week and have been noticed,’’ Adams said. “At (South Carolina) State, I was known as a physical corner. I’ve had to back off some this week and show the pro scouts I can backpedal. That’s what they like to see in a player, because you have to be able to do that in the NFL.

“My agent is trying to get me an invitation to the NFL combine, which would give me more exposure. But if it doesn’t happen, I’ll get at least another chance. We have Pro Day at State on March 31. We have other seniors that deserve a shot at the NFL, so I’m hoping they get noticed.’’ Adams, 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, spent the last four years in Orangeburg playing for coach Buddy Pough’s S.C. State Bulldogs. Adams admits he’s come a long way since his freshman season and has continued to improve after being moved from safety to cornerback when he got to college.
