Coastal Carolina-Delaware State breakdown‎

Series | Tied 1-1
Weather | 84 degrees with clear skies

Injuries | Coastal: LB E.J. Brown (knee) and RB Travis Small (thigh) are questionable; DE Jamel Davis (thumb), LB Andrae Jacobs (head), S Marcus Lott (thigh) are probable; OL Steve Simpson (knee) is doubtful; DE Quinton Davis (ankle) and David Hall (knee) are out. Delaware State: n/a.
Key number: 1
Delaware State returned only one full-time defensive starter from a team that finished 4-7 last season.
Key matchup
Delaware State's Larrone Moore vs. Coastal Carolina's Josh Norman (and friends). Moore is the Hornets' top offensive weapon, averaging 97 receiving yards per game. Look for Delaware State to try to get Moore heavily involved. Coastal would be wise to have Norman (eight interceptions last season) shadow him.

Less size allows growth for DSU's Green

DOVER, DE -- Kevin Green was ranked by one scouting service among the top 40 linebackers in the country when he signed to play football at Purdue in 2007. But even though he grew up in Chicago, something just didn't feel quite right for the 6-foot-2, 245-pound linebacker in West Lafayette, Ind.

"I wasn't really getting treated right there," Green said. "I was talking to a couple of the players and they said, 'We'd like you to stay here, but you've got to do what you've got to do for yourself.' "

So, rather than playing in front of 62,500 at Purdue's Ross-Ade Stadium, Green says he is just as happy playing before 4,000 fans at DSU's Alumni Stadium.

Speed sets Delaware State receiver apart

Delaware State University wide receivers coach Curt Thomas thinks highly of Hyattsville native and Northwestern High School graduate Larrone Moore.

In fact, Thomas said Moore holds a unique place among Hornets' players historically. "He flat out may be faster than any receiver that has come through Delaware State in the last 25 years," said Thomas, who recruited Moore out of high school. "He's probably the fastest ever. One thing you can't coach is flat-out speed. Sky's the limit for this kid. He can continue his career beyond Delaware State. Scouts have been watching him the last three seasons."

Moore has put his speed on display early...

Defense prevails in FAMU's first win

DOVER, Del. — A lot of what coach Joe Taylor expected from his Florida A&M football team didn't materialize, but he was thankful Saturday night at Alumni Stadium. Taylor's biggest thank you after watching the film could go the Rattlers' defense, which turned away Delaware State twice during the final seven minutes to secure a 17-14 victory in FAMU's first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game.

"It's always been tough to play up here," Taylor said, "but we will take a victory." Neither team could do much offensively early on. The teams mustered just 16 points in the first half with the Rattlers taking a 10-6 lead at halftime.

DOVER, DE -- The good thing is that Delaware State's football team might be just one swift kick away from solving its problems. The bad thing is that Mario Diaz-Aviles, the Hornets' freshman placekicker, sat on the bench with a severely injured ankle against Florida A&M University and won't be ready to come back anytime soon.

The lack of a reliable placekicker put DSU coach Al Lavan and his Hornets at a sizable disadvantage in field position -- and scoring -- against the Rattlers.

Hornets quick hits

Delaware State's football team wore stickers with the initials "KG" on their helmets during Saturday's game against Florida A&M in honor of New York City firefighter Keith Glascoe, a DSU graduate who played for the Hornets in the early 1980s and was among those killed while performing rescue efforts at the World Trade Center on 9/11.

DSU, Florida A&M both seek first win

DOVER, DE -- Both Delaware State University and Florida A&M lost their season openers last week.

For the Hornets, it was a second-half breakdown that led to a 37-27 loss to Southern. For FAMU, it was a 45-0 rout at the hands of national power Miami. So both will be eager to get their seasons headed in the right direction in tonight's match-up between the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rivals at Alumni Stadium.

Hornets defensive lineman Andre Caroll set a career high with 13 tackles against Southern. He cannot wait to get back onto the football field. "Honestly, I was really heartbroken after that game," Caroll said. "I felt like we all played hard, we just messed up on the little things. Then in the fourth quarter I think we all got tired and that Florida sun really took a toll on us. Fatigue set in.

DOVER, Del. — With his Delaware State football team having just three seniors on offense, Al Lavan still isn't too sure about the character of the Hornets. But he insists his younger players don't have much time to show how good they could become.

"We are evolving into a maturing football team," Lavan said as he prepared DSU to face Florida A&M today. "We've got a very young squad in most areas. We've got a couple of positions and personnel that have played a little bit, but overall it's a mixture. We will just have to grow up fast and become more resilient and tougher mentally."

Florida A&M will mix and match instead of relying on one returner as it did during the past two seasons when LeRoy Vann ran his way into the NCAA and school record books. Jerral Stewart came out of spring camp as Vann's successor for both kick and punt returns, but coach Joe Taylor has decided to capitalize on the speed of University of Florida transfer receiver T.J. Lawrence. He will take the punt return job while Stewart will return kickoffs.

Explosive 4th Quarter gives Southern 37-27 win over Delaware State

Orlando, FL - With a national television audience looking along, Southern University kicked off its regular season Sunday with an explosive fourth quarter win under new coach Stump Mitchell against Delaware State. A fourth quarter rally with back-to-back-to-back touchdowns gave Southern the lead and win. The score of Mitchell's first game was Southern, 37; Delaware State, 27.

The Jaguars faced Delaware State in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Fla., that aired on ESPN. Freshman quarterback Dray Joseph picked up his first collegiate touchdown with 8 minutes to play in the game to bring the score to 23 to 27 with Delaware State still leading at that point.

Offseason of change leads SU to new look, era

Baton Rouge, LA - Neckties. When it came to neckties, the man decided he wouldn’t budge. In the eight months since Stump Mitchell drove to Southern University in his black SUV, he concerned himself with so many changes to the Jaguars football program. Then, in the final days of this hard, boiling-hot preseason at SU, the first-year coach had one more change in mind. He made men’s fashion a top priority.

Friday morning, the Jaguars boarded a plane for Orlando, Fla., site of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge. They begin their first season under Mitchell against Delaware State at 11 a.m. Sunday in Citrus Bowl Stadium, with a national audience watching along on ESPN.

But before they left town, Mitchell notified his players of one more change: No one, he said, is allowed to travel unless...

No more mud at the Orlando Citrus Bowl Stadium

Premium quality Astroturf is being laid at the stadium. Orlando Venues Executive Director Alan Johnson said the carpet is laid from sideline to sideline, then sewn together by a special machine. "We're excited about this surface," he said. It gives the stadium operators more flexibility to host events like concerts, monster trucks and motorcross.

On Wednesday, the turf was already laid and pallets of sand and tiny rubber bits in large sacks were waiting to be installed. The infill gives the grass a more natural feel. The million dollar installation is expected to be done by the end of August. The first game played will be the MEAC/SWAC Challenge between Southern University and Delaware State, Johnson said.

Delaware State Hornets football: Jones stepped in, stepped up

DOVER, DE -- The running back position for Delaware State University proved to be an express route to the hospital last year. While the three tailbacks above him on the depth chart suffered injuries, somehow Jaashawn Jones remained healthy and started the Hornets' final four games. In eight games, Jones powered his way to a team-high 632 yards on 151 carries (4.2 yards per carry) to rank fifth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with a rushing average of 79 yards per game.

This season, Jones, a redshirt junior from Asbury Park, N.J., is atop the DSU depth chart at running back. "You just work hard. You've got to push," said Jones, a 6-foot-1, 220 pounder. "If you don't push then nothing's going to come to you, basically. You've got to go and get everything you can in life. "I think I've got a nice combination of vision, power and speed -- just a little bit of everything."

LaSalle Volleyball Adds Cassandra Joyner To Coaching Staff

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Former Delaware State University volleyball standout Cassandra Joyner joins the La Salle volleyball staff as an assistant coach, announced head coach Dave Stever. Joyner, a 2010 graduate of Delaware State with a major in Psychology, became the school's first player to reach 1,000 kills and ended her career with 1,272 winners to go along with 888 career digs and 310 career blocks.

"I appreciate this opportunity to be part of the LaSalle University Explorers volleyball staff, working hand-in-hand with Coach Stever and the student-athletes," Joyner said. "I am looking forward to working with the team and helping the players see their potential and execute to their highest level."

A four-year letter winner and team captain, Joyner led the Hornets in kills, blocks and digs in both 2008 and 2009. A two-time All-MEAC first team selection, Joyner finished third in the MEAC in points (4.13 pg), fourth in kills (3.32 pg) and sixth in hitting percentage (.283) during her final season with the Hornets. In 2009, she helped her team set several school records, as well as a 20-13 overall record, including an 8-2 mark in the MEAC.

DSU's only veteran starting defender ready to lead young team

DOVER, DE -- Andre Caroll checks in at around 280 pounds.

This season, he'll be carrying much more weight for the Delaware State University football team. Caroll, a defensive tackle, is the only returning defensive player who started in all 10 games for the Hornets, who went 4-7 overall, 3-5 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, last season. The Hornets open their season in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge against Southern University in Orlando, Fla., on Sept. 5.

Caroll, a 6-foot-2, redshirt senior, welcomed the challenge as the DSU players began preseason practice at Alumni Stadium on a sweltering Wednesday afternoon. "A lot of guys on this team are young, especially on the defensive side of the ball, so being able to get us together is going to take us being able to trust one another," Caroll said. "That's one thing we really didn't have last year. There were just a lot of individuals out there."

Ray Petty, DSU's defensive coordinator, is entering his fourth season with the Hornets. "He's the best player we have on our team right now, on both sides of the ball," Petty said of Caroll. "He had an outstanding junior year and he worked hard in the offseason. He's one of those guys who leads by example with the things he does on and off the field.

Delaware State Hornets Kicks Off 2010 Football Camp

Dover, DE --- Delaware State University's 2010 summer football camp is underway. About 85 players spent today moving into their rooms, attending meetings and being welcomed by among others, DSU President Harry Williams and athletic director Derek Carter. After a picture taking session Wednesday morning, the 2010 Hornets will hit the field for the first time. The players will be put through a run test tomorrow morning and take part in their first official practice in the evening.

Although the Hornets return their starting quarterback, best rusher, top two receivers and leading tackler from last season, there will be a number of new faces at other key positions this year. Delaware State expects to return just seven starters and 32 letter winners from last season. The defense is most critically hit, with just one starter and nine others on the 2009 two-deep returning. The offensive line must replace three starters, while the Hornets will also feature newcomers at punter and placekicker this season.

Delaware State bowler a star in the driver's seat

Bower is Pennsylvania track's first female feature race champion.

During the school year, Nicole Bower is on a mission to bring Delaware State University its first NCAA team championship in any sport. But during the summer, Bower kicks off her bowling shoes and puts on her racing helmet and firesuit to race sprint cars at tracks in Pennsylvania.

On the bowling lanes, Bower helped the Hornets advance to their second consecutive NCAA Tournament last spring. She has found success behind the wheel, too. In early May, Bower led all 20 laps of the 358 sprint feature at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicburg, Pa., becoming the first female to win a feature race at the half-mile clay track. The "358" designation refers to engine displacement. Bower lives about 15 minutes from the track in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania.

"It was unbelievable," said Bower, who began her racing career at the age of 12 in a quartermidget, often racing at New Castle's Airport Speedway. "It took quite a few days for the win to set in. I had dreamed of standing in victory lane at Williams Grove for a long time. All of the great drivers have been there ... and to get that opportunity is just great."

The 19-year-old will gott yet another thrill on August 5, when she competed against Sprint Cup regulars Kasey Kahne and Tony Stewart in the Ollie's Bargain Outlet "Battle at the Grove" charity race at Williams Grove.

DSU's Murray Wins Bronze at World Junior Championships

DOVER, DE- Delaware State University track & field standout Leslie Murray has earned world recognition this summer. Murray posted a time of 50.22 seconds in the race, trailing only gold medal winner Jehue Gordon of Trinidad & Tobago (49.30) and runner-up Takatoshi Abe of Japan (49.46). Murray, who is entering his junior year at Delaware State, helped lead the Hornets to the 2010 MEAC indoor championship in the 1600-meter relay this past season.

Citrus Bowl begins artificial turf installation

ORLANDO, FL -- The organization that runs the Citrus Bowl and its bowl games has ensured that the field conditions that marred last year's games will not happen again.

Florida Citrus Sports says installation of an artificial turf surface is underway, and the new field will be ready for the MEAC/SWAC Challenge between Southern and Delaware State on Sept. 5.

“We have been staging major events in the stadium for over 60 years where the athlete experience is of premium importance,” said Florida Citrus Sports CEO Steve Hogan in a news release. “Hosting a large number of events in short time windows have challenged the ability to provide optimum field conditions and paint schemes needed for national television. With this improvement, we are very excited about our ability to provide one of the safest, most technologically-advanced playing surfaces in the industry to our customer.”

Heavy rain and cold temperatures following last December's eight high school football championships at the stadium did not allow a new grass field to set properly before the Champs Sports Bowl and Capital One Bowl, making for a messy and dangerous situation. Miami Hurricanes running back Graig Cooper suffered a knee injury that he and his coaching staff blamed on the poor field conditions. Cooper's status for the 2010 season is still up in the air as he rehabs the injury.

New Citrus Bowl field could end up in legal fight

Delay those purchase orders for new turf shoes -- MEAC/SWAC Challenge teams Delaware State University and Southern University. Same for you also, Florida Classic rivals Bethune-Cookman University and Florida A&M University. You are not out of the mud yet, with the Citrus Bowl. Read on....

You thought the mud debacle at the Citrus Bowl was bad?

Just wait. The long-anticipated installation of artificial turf could be caught up in a legal tangle, potentially damaging the hopes of putting in the new turf in time for the 2010 season. FieldTurf has questioned the way the city awarded AstroTurf the contract to put in the new grass, and is now threatening legal action. Darren Gill, vice president of marketing for FieldTurf, said in a phone interview, “This is not a case of sour grapes, but when the bidding laws aren’t abided by it should be a concern of the citizens of Orlando.”

Gill said the company has requested various documents from the City of Orlando through the Freedom of Information Act and is in the process of determining whether it should take legal action. Rather than go through a public bidding process for the artificial turf, the City of Orlando chose to go through national purchasing co-ops. Both companies already have established contracts through their respective co-ops. The city is a member of both co-ops, so they were allowed to utilize their services. The city then took a look at both contracts and went with AstroTurf “because of the quality, installation, history and pricing,” according to City of Orlando spokeswoman Cassandra Lafser.

MEAC/SWAC Challenge getting new AstroTurf at Citrus Bowl

The Florida Citrus Bowl is getting a quick makeover--grass is out and new AstroTurf is going in with completion due by September 1, 2010 -- just in time for the MEAC/SWAC Challenge. This year's event features Southern University Jaguars vs. Delaware State University Hornets on Sept 5. However, it took the embarrassment of last year Capital One and the Champs Sports Bowls, respectively, for the City Fathers to make a $1.5 million investment to improve the aging venue.

Apparently, after the 30th Florida Classic between Bethune-Cookman University Wildcats vs. Florida A&M University Rattlers, the City decided to replace the turf with fresh sod. But after heavy rains hit the Orlando area, the Miami (FL) Hurricanes and the Wisconsin Badgers did more slipping and sliding on the loose sod in the Champs Bowl (Dec. 29) than either team wants to remember. Penn State and LSU didn't fare any better in their January 1, 2010 showdown in the Capital One Bowl.

Since the Big Ten, ACC and SEC want no parts of the Mud Bowl when Florida gets a deluge of heavy rains, City Officials had no choice but to upgrade.

Bethune-Cookman University and Delaware State University will have the upper hand on Florida A&M University and Southern University with the new AstroTurf surface. B-CU is receiving new Field Turf on its home field at Daytona Beach Memorial Stadium with installation to be completed by Sept 1.

DSU has TenCate Thiolon Field Turf at its 7,193 seat Alumni Stadium. FAMU and Southern home stadiums, Bragg Memorial and A.W. Mumford Stadiums, currently have natural grass surfaces that can become a dust or mud bowl in late October based on the erratic Louisiana and North Florida weather patterns.

The Jaguars new coach Stump Mitchell is attempting to raise the necessary funds to replace the surface at Mumford Stadium with new Field Turf.

The 31st Florida Classic rivalry between Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M is scheduled for November 20, 2010. This year's event is expected to be a sellout with the Wildcats sporting a new head coach in former Rutgers position coach, Brian Jenkins. The Rattlers are coached by Joe Taylor who is in his third season at FAMU.

B-CU finishes year unbeaten in MEAC‎

B-CU Coach Mervyl Melendez's Wildcats clinch #1 Seed for MEAC Tournament and earned 2010 Regular Season MEAC Baseball Title.

For the second time in school history, Bethune-Cookman's baseball team has gone undefeated in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. B-CU scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning in a 13-9 win over Delaware State (12-30, 8-10) on Sunday. It's the first-ever 18-0 MEAC regular season; B-CU was 15-0 in 2006. The Wildcats (32-19) will have the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament May 20-23 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach.

Delaware State Falls to MEAC Champs

Dover, DE -- Bethune-Cookman scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning in a 13-9 win over Delaware State in MEAC baseball at Soldier Field today. The Wildcats, who clinched the MEAC regular season title on Saturday, completed the conference schedule with an 18-0 record (32-19 overall). Delaware State is 8-10 in the MEAC and 12-30 overall. Delaware State broke an 8-8 tie on a two-out single by Scott Davis in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Bethune-Cookman tied the game at nine on a single by Emmanuel Castro in the top of the ninth inning. The Wildcats pulled ahead 10-9 when Matt Wright followed with a run-scoring in the inning. BCU padded its lead when the next batter, Alejando Sanchez, followed with a three-run homer. The Hornets trailed 6-1 before scoring seven runs in the third inning to take the lead. Mike Rizzuto doubled in the first two runs of the inning. Also in the inning, Matt Aleman had a run-scoring single and Abe Eubank was credited with a RBI on a bases loaded walk. Brandon Crist capped off the inning with a three-run homer to give DSU an 8-6 lead.

Delaware State Hornets upbeat at Spring Camp‎

DOVER, DE -- The atmosphere at Delaware State University's Alumni Stadium for Saturday's Red-White football scrimmage was light years away from the doom-and-gloom that seemed to constantly envelop the Hornets last year. Quarterback Anthony Glaud was consistently finding his receivers in stride and the team's young defense showed promise at the linebacker positions. The feelings were of promise and great expectations for when the Hornets return to the field in August for summer football camp. "It was good in processing this entire spring," Glaud said, preparing for his senior season. "This is actually the best we've looked and it's a good thing to be the best that you are at the end of spring [camp], so now we have something to carry into the summer and then into the fall camp."

Coach Lavan sees signs of improvement in young DSU squad. Delaware State will open its 11-game 2010 season on Sunday, Sept. 5, against Southern University (La.) in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge at Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Fla.

Al Lavan, preparing for his seventh season as DSU's head coach, wasn't looking for greatness. He just wanted to see signs of improvement. "I think overall we accomplished in the last 15 days what we needed to accomplish which was to see an improvement of our football team," said Lavan, who is 38-28 overall with the Hornets. "It's such a young team in the offensive line and a lot of different areas, but I thought we made improvement, which was the main thing.
