Sophomore is only returning starter on this year's DSU squad

DOVER, Delaware - Deanna Harmon was class salutatorian at St. Francis Academy in Baltimore in 2010 and is a member of the Delaware State Dean's List and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

The sophomore is majoring in mathematics with a minor in accounting. She said the toughest course she's taking right now is chemistry. And in her spare time, Harmon is trying to reverse the fortunes of a college basketball team.

Harmon is the only returning starter on the Delaware State women's team. So along with her myriad academic commitments, Harmon is charged with leading a team that includes seven freshmen, four sophomores and two juniors.

"This is an entirely different group from last year ...

Scouting report: Morgan State vs. Delaware State

Morgan State (4-3, 3-1 MEAC) vs. Delaware State (2-5, 0-4 MEAC)
Time: 1 p.m.
Radio: 88.9 FM
Series: Morgan leads series 30-23
MSU Gamenotes

What's at stake: Morgan State, which is tied for first place in the MEAC, will face the struggling Hornets on the road as both teams are coming off bye weeks. Before the break, the Bears had won two straight, including a dominant 52-3 victory at North Carolina Central on Oct. 29. Meanwhile, the Hornets have plummeted in the standings. After winning its first two games of the season, Delaware State has lost five straight under first-year coach Kermit Blount. The Bears have not won at Delaware State since 2003, when they claimed a 53-36 victory.

Key matchup: Morgan State running back Travis Davidson rushed for a game-high 142 yards and three touchdowns in the Bears' rout of N.C. Central two weeks ago. The junior leads the team with 455 rushing yards this season and five touchdowns. Running backs have had no problem against the Hornets, who have allowed more than 200 rushing yards per game this season. The Delaware State defense has allowed a MEAC-worst 441 yards per game.

N.C. A&T ends years of frustration with a homecoming victory

Greensboro, North Carolina -- "Now this is how a homecoming game should be," said an N.C. A&T fan after the Aggies scored an early touchdown during their game against Delaware State.

That was one of four scores in the first half as A&T rolled to a 42-24 win over the Hornets. It was the first homecoming win for A&T at Aggie Stadium since 2003.

"I'm excited for our players, for them to have had an opportunity to taste some success, win the first homecoming they've won since they've been here and mostly for playing the way they are playing," said N.C. A&T coach Rod Broadway. "We still have a lot of work to do before we develop into the type of football team we are capable of having here. Like any win, it's a good win."

The Aggies improved to 4-2 on the season and, more importantly, 3-0 in the MEAC, and Broadway said his team is beginning to understand that success in one game doesn't always equal success in the next. A&T faces four consecutive conference road games starting with Howard next Saturday.

Florida A&M Rattlers dominates Delaware State Hornets

Tallahassee, Florida - Florida A&M scored in every quarter, including 14 points in the third quarter, to seal a 34-7 win over Delaware State on Saturday in Tallahassee. The Rattlers got a pair of Trevor Scott field goals to take a 6-0 halftime advantage. The first was from 25 yards out and the second from 34.

Florida A&M (3-2 overall, 1-1 MEAC) saw its offense come alive in the third quarter. Damien Fleming hit Brian Tyms on a 23-yard strike for the first score. Al Terek McBurse burst through the line for a 25-yard run on the second.

Delaware State (2-3, 0-2) got on the board for the first time early in the gourth quarter when Nick Elko hit Milton Williams on a 9-yard touchdown pass. But it was too little too late, as Fleming responded with a 1-yarder touchdown and, just for good measure, Eddie Rocker added a 20-yarder to bring the game to its final score.

FAMU offense in midseason form

The FAMU Rattlers' offense is clicking at exactly the right time despite an early-season change at quarterback.

Freshman quarterback Damien Fleming started his first collegiate game Saturday and provided a strong performance and leadership for a team looking for its first conference win. Fleming threw for 245 yards and a touchdown and rushed for another touchdown against the Delaware State Hornets.

Head coach Joe Taylor said he was impressed with his quarterback's poise after mistakes and his willingness to fight after a slow first half against the Hornets.

DSU ends scoreless streak, but drops third in a row

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Delaware State put points on the board for the first time in more than 11 quarters, but had little else to celebrate in a 34-7 loss to Florida A&M in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game Saturday. The Hornets (2-3 overall, 0-2 MEAC) dropped their third straight game.

Delaware State scored its lone touchdown on a 9-yard pass from Nick Elko to Milton Williams with 11:37 left in the fourth quarter. The score was the first for the Hornets since the game-winning touchdown with 35 seconds left in a 31-27 win over Shaw on Sep. 10.

"We played well for a while, but made too many mistakes," said Delaware State coach Kermit Blount. "Hopefully, we'll get some of our injured players back soon to help out the offense."

Helmet cam debuts at FAMU practice

Coach Joe Taylor
Tallahassee, FL - From a distance the little silver gadget strapped to the helmets of quarterbacks Austin Trainor and Damien Fleming looked weird. It almost seemed like a distraction.

But both said the device, which is actually a helmet camera, can only make them better at their job from under center. Coach Joe Taylor said he approved its use for practices because it serves as a third eye that lets him and his staff see exactly what the quarterbacks see.

"I think it's going to have a pretty good amount of upside; it gives you a perspective from the quarterback's eyes," Trainor said. "We can't tell coach one thing and he sees another thing. It should help us in our development as quarterbacks; nothing but positives from it."

That's exactly what the team's videographer ...

Reeling Delaware State Hornets try to get it together again

DOVER, DE -- Delaware State's football team has been humiliated the past two weeks in crushing losses to Delaware and South Carolina State, losing by a combined score of 114-0. So the Hornets called a team meeting Monday, minus the coaching staff, and took a hard look at themselves in the mirror. They weren't too thrilled with what they saw.

Delaware State (2-2 overall, 0-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) hopes the airing of grievances proves productive when it travels to play Florida A&M (2-2, 0-1) in Tallahassee, Fla., on Saturday at 6 p.m.

"We definitely had a heart-to-heart meeting [Monday], just the players only, and a lot came out and [Tuesday] is where it's going to start. This practice right now is going to be a lot faster and a lot more intense. We're going to get ready for FAMU," said Brandon Harvey, the Hornets' senior middle linebacker. "Everything came together [in the meeting]. We were rallying basically, more than anything. We came together, and that was the most important thing."

Route 1 Rivalry not much of one; UD rolls to 45-0 blowout win over DSU

NEWARK, DE — The game might be called the Route 1 Rivalry on paper, but on Tubby Raymond field Saturday night, the contest between the University of Delaware and Delaware State University wasn’t much of a game.

The Blue Hens scored impressively on their first three drives, marching 80 yards on five plays, 96 on 14, and 58 on eight. Conversely, the Hornets went three-and-out on their first two drives, threw an interception on the second play of its third, and then fumbled a ball that the Hens returned for a 32-yard touchdown on its fourth.

The Blue Hens got 13 first downs before the Hornets picked up their first. It was 28-0 before the UD students finished filing into their seats.

DSU ready to dream big against UD on Saturday

Dover, DE - Kermit Blount knows what it's like to have the proverbial rug pulled out from under him. The new coach at Delaware State University was the coach at Division II Winston-Salem State two years ago as the school was nearing the end of a five-year plan to make the transition from Division II to Division I-AA, or the Football Championship Subdivision.

Everything seemed in place, and the team was eagerly anticipating the move into the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. It already had increased the scholarships from 38 under Division II rules to 55. It was playing a full FCS schedule.

Then, just before that season started, the school called an audible and announced that it was going back to Division II. Blount and the players were devastated. The Rams went 1-10 that season, and Blount was asked to resign when it was over.

"It certainly hurt the players, and I found that I became more of a father figure than a coach because they relied on me to help guide them," Blount said.

DSU capitalizes on fumble for comeback win

DOVER, DE -- Delaware State was handed the gift of life as a driving rainstorm pounded Alumni Stadium in the closing minutes of the Hornets' home opener against Shaw University on Saturday night.

With 49 seconds remaining, the Bears handed the football to James Langford, who was hit immediately by DSU defensive lineman Olusegun Ayanbiola, who forced a fumble and recovered it at Shaw's 12-yard line.

Two plays later, with the rain still dripping in his eyes, Delaware State quarterback Nick Elko launched a 12-yard pass to Darius Jackson, who caught it for the game-winning touchdown in the right-corner of the end zone as the Hornets capped an improbable 31-27 comeback victory over Shaw in a nonconference game.

"I was very surprised," DSU middle linebacker Brandon Harvey said. "I actually asked the ref, 'Are they going to down the football?' And he said, 'No.' I said, 'OK, we're going to cause a turnover.'"

Shaw Suffers Fourth-Quarter Collapse - Loses to DSU 31-27

Shaw played three strong quarters against Division I Delaware State on Saturday, but allowed the Hornets to swarm in the fourth - giving up 22 last period points, including a last-minute touchdown that sent the Bears home with a 31-27 loss.

With the loss, the Bears drop to 0-2 while the Hornets improve to 2-0 on the season.

With 1:01 left on the clock, DSU lined up for a field goal that would have tied the game at 27. In a driving rain and into a strong wind, Mitchell Ward's attempt went wide right and the Bears got the ball at their own 20.

After a loss of five on a delay of game penalty, James Langford got the handoff, but Quentin Ferguson forced a fumble, giving the Hornets the ball 13 yards from the end zone. Two plays later, Nick Elko covered that ground with a 13-yard strike to Darius Jackson - giving the Hornets the win.

Delaware State Holds on to Beat VMI on the Road

Lexington, VA - Kermit Blount made a memorable debut as head coach of the Delaware State football team. In a game marked by a more than one hour delay to start the second half due to lightning, Blount led the Hornets to a 24-21 victory over VMI in the season opener for each team before 6,209 fans at Foster Stadium this afternoon.

Nick Elko threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns and Justin Wilson had two TD catches to lead Delaware State's 346-yard attack. The Hornet defense forced three turnovers and made a key fourth down stop late in the fourth quarter on VMI's final possession.

"This is a very special win for me, but more importantly for our players," said Blount, who was head coach at Winston-Salem State University for 17 years for accepting the DSU job last February.

"Our players have done everything we've asked since I arrived, and I couldn't be happier for them," Blount said. "This is a good win for our program. We had some adversity right from the start, but everyone stayed focused on the mission at hand."

A Delaware State turnover on the opening kickoff led to a VMI touchdown just 52 seconds into the season. Three plays after Tavis Tarpley lost a fumble on the opening kick at the VMI 11, Chaz Jones scored a touchdown on a one-yard run to give the Keydets a 7-0 lead.

The Hornets took advantage of a VMI turnover to score their first points of the season. Tarpley atoned for his miscue by hauling in a 19-yard touchdown pass from Elko on a diving catch to pull DSU to within 7-6 with 12:03 left in the first quarter. The drive began at the VMI 19 following an interception by linebacker Brandon Harvey The Hornets failed to tie the score when freshman Mitchell Ward missed the extra point kick.

"The team responded well to the early turnover," Blount said. "After the fumble, I told Tarpley to keep his head up, and he came through with a big-time catch for the touchdown."

The Keydets added to their lead on a touchdown midway through the second quarter. Jones scored for the second time in the game when he fumbled on a three-yard run, but recovered the ball in the endzone to give VMI at 14-6 lead with 6:22 to go before halftime.

Elko and Wilson connected on the first of their two touchdown strikes to help pull the Hornets pull even shortly before the half. The duo capped off a five-play, 56-yard drive with a seven-yard scoring pass to pull the Hornets to within 14-12 with 1:55 left in the second quarter. The pair also had a 28-yard connection during the drive. The Hornets tied the score at 14 on a two-point pass from Elko to Tarpley after the touchdown.

The teams had to endure a longer than usual halftime break when lightning forced an evacuation of the stadium. There were also reports of a tornado in the area. Played resumed after a 68-minute delay.

Delaware State took the lead for the first time when Elko and Wilson hooked up on a 47-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Wilson caught the ball at around the VMI 20, then eluded two would-be tacklers before sprinting into the endzone. Freshman placekicker Mitchell Ward tacked on the extra point to give the Hornets a 21-14 lead with 5:46 left in the third quarter.

Wilson, the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Preseason Offensive Player-of-the-Year, had six catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns in the contest. Counting the Hornets' 2010 finale at Howard, Wilson has 15 receptions for 327 yards and six touchdowns in his last two games.

The Hornets stretched their lead to 24-14 when Ward hit his first collegiate field goal, a 24-yard kick with 12:51 left in the fourth quarter. Elko completed 2-of-3 passes for 47 yards during the scoring drive, including a 37-yard strike to Tarpley.

VMI pulled to within 24-21 when Jones scored his third touchdown of the game on a 4-yard run with 7:38 left to play. Jones led all players with 76 yards rushing on 19 carries.

After Delaware State failed to score on its next possession, the Keydets started their final drive of the game at their 20-yard line with 2:51 left to play.

The Hornet defense forced VMI into three incomplete passes and a completion for no gain in four plays to seal the win.

Elko, in his first season as the full-time starting quarterback, completed 17-of-32 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.

"I didn't have to face a lot of pressure because our offensive line did such a great job," said Elko, who was not sacked in the contest. "We had a few execution issues early in the game, but overall I was pleased with our offensive effort."

Tarpley had 174 all-purpose yards; 76 on five receptions and 92 on four kickoff returns.

Jaashawn Jones led the Hornets with 69 rushing yards on 18 carries, while newcomer Josh Bailey rushed for 38 yards on 10 attempts.

Defensive back Joe Boyd led the Hornets with nine tackles. Tavis Tabb, Ernest Adjei and Quentin Ferguson had seven stops each.

Matt Spicer also had a DSU interception, while Quintin Fortes recovered a VMI fumble for the Hornets.

Darrell Brown was credited with Delaware State's lone sack.

The Hornets will play their home opener next Saturday (Sep. 10) against Shaw University. Game time is 6:00 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

STINGERS
The Hornets snapped a two-game losing streak in season openers, while the loss snapped VMI's six-game win streak in opening games ... Blount is the first Delaware State head coach to win his opening game with the team since John McKenzie made his debut with a 50-18 win over Cheyney in 1997 ... redshirt freshman Joseph "Bo" Ceravolo had two receptions for 10 yards in his Hornet debut ... The Hornets have won their last two road games after dropping their previous five ... Delaware State is now 7-11 time against current Big South Conference teams.

BOXSCORE

QUOTES - VMI Head Coach Sparky Woods
"I think that they just made a few more plays than we did. Credit them, they have a big, strong athletic football team and I thought their quarterback threw the ball well and their running backs ran the ball hard. The two key plays that stick out were our first big kick-off return. When we got the ball back, we threw a really bad interception on a tipped ball."

"We missed our field goal, they made theirs and then they drove the ball 80-yards and scored and we just ran out of time. We have potential to be a pretty good football team, but we just have catch more passes that could have turned into first down or positive yards."

"Tracy Hairston made a couple great catches and Chaz Jones ran the ball well. They were determined to keep us from running the ball, and we need to throw the ball better when that happens. Defensively, we needed to rise to the occasion, and our coverage and returns were average, and we need to make field goals from shorter distances."

"The delay had the same effect on both teams. We kind of sat down and got our thoughts together. That has happened to us in practice plenty this year, and I don't see it as a reason to lose a game."

DSU Hornets linebacker leading by example

DOVER, DE -- Brandon Harvey leads, and Kermit Blount knows it.

"He's certainly a kid who's the first guy in all the drills," said Blount, Delaware State's new football coach. "He's going to be the first guy on the field and the last guy to leave and the first guy in the weight room. "He brings a bunch of leadership and experience to our defensive unit."

Harvey, a 5-foot-11, 240-pound senior middle linebacker, is one of the cogs the Hornets are counting on to help revitalize their defense. Last year, DSU ranked last in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in total defense (384.5 yards per game), eighth in rush defense (196.9 ypg) and eighth in pass defense (188.1 ypg).

But the Hornets have a new defensive coordinator in Mike Ketchum, who served for five years as Blount's defensive coordinator at Winston-Salem State. Ketchum has brought a new attitude to preseason camp at Alumni Stadium. "Camp is definitely going better than last year," Harvey said. "I think the team looks a lot better, is a lot more focused, and a lot more determined to get better."

Indianapolis Colts signs Delaware State's WR Larrone Moore

Indianapolis, IN - The Indianapolis Colts Friday officially announced the signing of Delaware State University free agent wide-receiver Larrone Moore.

Moore totaled 102 receptions for 1,236 yards and five touchdowns in 43 career games at Delaware State. In 2009 as a junior, he ranked second on the team with 33 catches and 315 yards while posting the third-highest kickoff return-yard average (25.6) in the MEAC. As a freshman in 2007, Moore led the squad with 431 kickoff return yards.

The 6'-0", 196 pound wideout and kick returner is noted for his speed, clocking a 4.38 40 yard dash at DSU's Pro Day. The Prince George's County (Hyattsville, MD) native played high school football at Northwestern High School.

Moore was the top sprinter on Delaware State’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams … qualified for 2009 NCAA Outdoor East Regional championships in the 100-meter dash (10.39) and 200-meter dash (20.75) … member of Delaware State’s NCAA championship qualifying 1600-meter relay team, which posted a school-record time of 3:05.21 at national championships … captured 2009 MEAC indoor 200-meter championship with time of 21.50 seconds … qualified for 2008 NCAA East Regional in 100 & 200 … also competed in long jump (top leap: 6.84 meters).

In other words, Larrone Moore has an excellent opportunity to become a deep threat kick returner in the NFL, as he can outright fly.

Wood lifts NC State past Delaware State 72-70

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Scott Wood's putback with 2.1 seconds left lifted North Carolina State past Delaware State 72-70 on Wednesday night.

Richard Howell scored a career-high 16 points, C.J. Leslie had 15 and DeShawn Painter added a career-high 14 for the Wolfpack (7-4). They led by 13 late in the first half but needed some drama to hold off the pesky Hornets. Casey Walker scored 20 points and hit four 3-pointers for Delaware State (4-6), and his free throw with 37.2 seconds left tied it at 70.

Wolfpack escapes Delaware State upset

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Scott Wood picked the right time to hit his first basket. Wood's putback with 2.1 seconds left gave N.C. State a 72-70 win over Delaware State on Wednesday night at the RBC Center. Wood was 0-for-6 before he grabbed a missed 3-pointer from Ryan Harrow about eight feet from the basket and coolly dropped in the game-winning shot.

Delaware State's last gasp, a halfcourt shot by Jay Threatt, bounced off the front of the rim and harmlessly to the floor. N.C. State got a career-best 16 points from Richard Howell and 15 from forward C.J. Leslie and 14 from DeShawn Painter against the undersized Hornets.

Delaware State Ends Howard Bison Misery 53-43

Howard University Bison ends season 1-10, 0-8 in MEAC

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- All-MEAC receiver Justin Wilson has frustrated opposing secondaries throughout the season. After piling up 217 yards on nine receptions and four touchdowns -- three in the second quarter -- in a record-setting performance Saturday afternoon, you can add the Howard defenders to the list of the tormented.

Wilson set the Delaware State single-season record for receptions and quarterback Anthony Glaud passed for a season-high 351 yards and four touchdowns in his final collegiate game as the Hornets rolled to a 53-43 win over the Bison in the season finale on Saturday.

Larrone Moore's 86-yard kickoff return for a touchdown started the scoreboard humming for the Hornets after they fell behind 9-0 in the first quarter. They led 29-16 at halftime and 53-29 in the fourth quarter after Wilson's fourth touchdown. All six of the Hornets touchdowns came on drives lasting less than two minutes. The 53 points marked their highest scoring output of the season.

HOWARD FALLS TO DELAWARE STATE IN SHOOTOUT

Washington, DC—November 20---Delaware State spotted Howard a 9-0 lead and then reeled off 23 straight points in the second quarter to go on to a 53-43 win in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Greene Stadium. It was the regular season finale for both teams.

Delaware State Hornets basketball: Drilled in Jackson way of play, young team getting first test

Dover, DE - Basketball fanatics who like to see 100 points or more go up on the scoreboard probably should avoid Delaware State's Memorial Hall this winter. That's because, in typical Greg Jackson style, Delaware State's men's basketball team will attempt to wear its opponents down with stifling defense, especially considering that nine of its 15 players are underclassmen.

DSU will tip off its 2010-11 season at 7:30 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Washington Adventist in a nonconference game. Jackson, entering his 11th season as Hornets coach, will try to mold his young team to play with his defensive philosophy.

Del. St. Hornets to Kick Off Basketball Season

Dover, Del. - Delaware State tips off the 2010-11 men's basketball season against NCAA Division II Washington Adventist (formerly Columbia Union) of Takoma Park, Md., tomorrow evening (Nov. 13). Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

The Hornets return eight letter winners from their 2009-10 squad, which posted an overall record of 17-12. DSU was second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) final regular season standings with an 11-5 mark in league play last season. Washington Adventist was 6-18 during the 2010-11 season. The Shock brought in Patrick Crarey as their new head coach during the off-season.

DSU Hornets say they're up for challenge against S.C. State Bulldogs

DOVER, DE -- A tough season will not become any easier today when Delaware State's football team hosts South Carolina State, the two-time reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champions who are ranked 17th nationally in Division I-AA. DSU (1-6 overall, 1-4 MEAC) hosts the Bulldogs (5-2, 3-1) at Alumni Stadium at 1 this afternoon. The Hornets say they will not be intimidated.

"They're one of the best teams in the MEAC, so we've had to prepare hard this week for a very competitive match," said Andre Caroll, a redshirt senior defensive lineman for DSU.

The Hornets are hoping to follow the same blueprint as last season, when they won two out of their last three games to finish 4-7 despite struggling to a 1-5 start, which included a forfeit loss because of a scheduling conflict.

DSU learning painful lesson, Lavan says

DOVER, DE -- There is no class at Delaware State that can teach its football team how to finish games. That, according to Hornets coach Al Lavan, has to be learned through difficult lessons. Those lessons don't get much more painful than DSU's 34-24 loss at Morgan State last Saturday, when the Hornets allowed 13 points in the final 20 seconds of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game.

Lavan remains confident in his team's ability, even as the Hornets (1-6 overall, 1-4 MEAC) prepare to host two-time reigning conference champion South Carolina State (5-2, 3-1) at Alumni Stadium at 1 p.m. Saturday.

A&T loses lead and 10th straight game

DOVER, DE -- Through a winless football season, Delaware State University could count on one offensive weapon from week to week: running back Jaashawn Jones.

On Saturday, Jones led the Hornets with 144 yards on 30 carries. More importantly, he drew enough attention from N.C. A&T's defense to open up big plays for the Hornets' other weapons. The result was a 31-26 homecoming win for the Hornets in front of 4,131 fans at Alumni Stadium. DSU (1-5, 1-3 MEAC) had seven plays of 20 yards or more, six of which came through the air.
