Winston Salem, North Carolina -- Winston-Salem State overwhelmed yet another opponent on Saturday. This time it was Edward Waters as the Rams rolled to a 59-7 win in front of about 5,000 at sunny Bowman Gray Stadium.
The Rams, ranked 11th, improved to 8-0 and have a chance to move into the top 10 on the NCAA Division II poll, thanks to an offense that scored seven touchdowns in its first nine series. The Rams are 8-0 for the first time since 1978.
"The guys really came out and were ready to play," coach Connell Maynor of the Rams said. "I thought they were focused and we jumped on them early."
Wide receiver Tehyvn Brantley caught two touchdown passes, Dominique Fitzgerald also caught one, and running back Nic Cooper ran for 120 yards on 19 carries and scored a touchdown. Quarterback Kameron Smith also had a productive day, completing 12 of 20 passes for 196 yards and running the offense with precision.

CIAA Football: Edward Waters 14, Livingstone 13
JACKSONVILLE, Florida — The Livingstone football team played Edward Waters in a low-scoring affair Saturday afternoon and in the end two special teams miscues doomed the Blue Bears as they fell 14-13 to the Tigers.
Edward Waters scored the first points of the game with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter as the Tigers connected on a 46-yard pass completion for a touchdown to go up 7-0.
Livingstone responded on the ensuing drive. The Blue Bears took the ball 70 yards over eight plays. The drive was capped off by a 37-yard passing touchdown from Levon Stanley to Miles Harris. The touchdown was Harris’ first score as a Blue Bear in his three-year career. The extra point was blocked by the Tigers and Edward Waters held a 7-6 lead.

XU's Kirk tames Lady Tigers with 13 kills, .650 percentage
TALLADEGA, Ala. — Moira Kirk produced 13 kills and a .650 attack percentage Friday to lead Xavier University of Louisiana to a 25-12, 25-12, 25-10 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference women's volleyball victory against Edward Waters.
The Gold Nuggets (8-2 overall, 3-0 GCAC) won their seventh in a row to extend a school record and moved a half-match ahead of Tougaloo in the conference.
Kirk had no attack errors for the first time this season. She hit .600 or better in a match for the third time, and for the first time she reached double figures in kills in consecutive matches. Kirk had 12 kills in a three-set sweep of Talladega earlier in the afternoon.
Xavier never trailed in any of the three sets, and first-year coach Christabell Hamilton used 11 of 12 players in the rout. Freshmen Kia Smith and Morgan Stallings both produced their first two kills of the season. Stallings also recorded her first block.
Starting setter Patrice Hightower did not play after the first set, and kills leader Taylor Reuther sat out the third. Alexandra Rencher had 16 assists and Smith seven in relief of Hightower.
Jeanay Butler served a season-best four aces and finished with a XU-best seven for the day.
Xavier closed the first set with a 12-4 run, had a 9-1 run in the second set and scored 11 of the first 12 points in the third. Edward Waters (2-10, 0-2) did not produce a kill until the 16th rally.
Xavier hit .275. It was the third straight match the Gold Nuggets hit .200 or higher, the first time that's happened since Xavier reinstated the program a year ago. The Nuggets had a 9-1 advantage in aces, including Celeste Poe's two and one apiece from Hightower, Rencher and Reuther.
Xavier will conclude its GCAC series at Talladega with an 8 a.m. Saturday match against Fisk, which led 5-2 and 9-5 in its fifth set against Tougaloo before losing 15-13. Fisk rallied from a 2-sets-to-none deficit.
NOTES: The Lady Tigers were Xavier's first neutral-site opponent of the season . . . It's the third time in Xavier's four seasons that the Nuggets won twice in one day. The other times were Sept. 11, 2004, and last Nov. 12 during the opening day of the GCAC Tournament . . . The Nuggets have won 10 consecutive sets and 21 of their last 23.

Morehouse Rolls Over Edward Waters
Atlanta, GA - David Carter rushed for 123 yards and four touchdowns, as Morehouse rolled over Edward Waters College, 49-15. Carter, a junior from Marietta, GA, scored on two 26-yard runs, a four-yard run and a one-yarder, to bring his season total to 363 yards and six touchdowns.
The Maroon Tigers rolled up a season-high 510 yards of offense, in the lopsided win over EWC, which plays in the smaller-college NAIA. Morehouse converted on 8-of-15 third-down chances and 3-of-3 fourth-down chances.
Edward Waters got on the board first with a seven-play, 61-yard drive that was capped off by a 5-yard touchdown run by Antonio Bellamy.
Morehouse bounced right back, with a “scoop and score,” by defensive back Darrius Williams who recovered an Edward Waters fumble at the 9-yard line and sprinted into the end zone. The fumble was forced by defensive end Elijah Anderson, who swatted down an errant lateral by quarterback Brandon Thurman.
Five minutes later, Carter broke several attempted arm tackles and rumbled 26 yards into the end zone, to give Morehouse 14-6 first quarter lead.
In the second quarter, Paul Parker extended the Maroon Tiger lead, with a 55-yard touchdown reception from Byron Ingram. Parker, a senior wide receiver, had his best day as a Maroon Tiger, finishing with two catches for 107 yards.
The ensuing extra point attempt was fumbled by holder Joshua Thurston and returned by linebacker Arthur Smith for a safety.
Edward Waters running back Anthony Wallace scored on a 3-yard rush, to bring the halftime score to 20-15.

Boys In The Hall: John Jordan "Buck" O'Neil
John Jordan "Buck" O'Neil (1911–2006) loved baseball, and immersed himself in the game from age 12 to 94. A standout Negro League player and two-time batting champion, O'Neil went on to become the first black manager of a major league team.
Kansas City, Mo. - If anybody in baseball ever had every reason to be surly and sullen during his life, Buck O'Neil is that man. Instead, nobody ever saw O'Neil when his face didn't look like a template for the yellow smiley face.
The first time I saw him was when the Cincinnati Reds played an interleague series against the Kansas City Royals. I visited the Negro League Baseball Museum and he was there, a broad smile splashed across his pleasant face.

Video: Buck O'Neil: 'It's who you are'
When I told him how sorry I was that he was never afforded the opportunity to display his talents in the major leagues because of his skin color, the smile broadened and he said, "You'll never hear me complain about anything because I've had a wonderful life and I'm still living a wonderful life."
At the time, he was in his 80s and as sharp as ever. And he remained that was into his 90s, a man whose memories of life in the Negro Leagues were lucid, vivid and highly entertaining.
After chatting, he handed me a Kansas City Monarchs cap, like the one he wore as a first baseman for the Negro American League team and I cherish it to this day.
Few people, even knowledgeable baseball people, ever heard of O'Neil until he was 84 years old and Ken Burns used him as the spokesman/historian for his documentary, "Baseball." And a legend was born.

Alvin Brown and the Decline of the Willie Gary Football Classic
Early in the campaign, several local reporters commented on the elusive nature of his work history, lamenting that it was difficult to accurately assess Mayor-elect Alvin Brown’s performance in a seemingly endless series of over-lapping jobs held since leaving the Clinton Administration more than a decade earlier. It seems that Brown’s role as president and executive director of the once-promising Willie E. Gary Football Classic, a scholarship program featuring an annual match-up of historically black colleges, might provide the most important clue as to his leadership abilities.
Founded by flamboyant trial attorney Willie Gary in 2002, the annual football game started out as something of a smashing success. In its early years, the classic was played at Alltel Stadium and drew relatively decent crowds — averaging about 15,000 per game between 2002 and 2004. Not bad for an annual match-up between two smaller schools.

Edward Waters hires Brad Bernard
EWC Head Football Coach Brad Bernard |
Even before former Bethune-Cookman offensive coordinator Brad Bernard was hired as head football coach at Edward Waters on Monday, his phone started ringing.
"Some people I hadn't talked to in 12 years were calling to congratulate me and sometimes asking for a job," Bernard said. Bernard will be officially introduced today at the NAIA school in Jacksonville. And then he will begin making his own calls to put together a coaching staff. One of the first calls he will make, Bernard said, will be to old boss, former B-CU head coach Alvin Wyatt.
"Everyone in America would like to talk to that man," Bernard said of the Wildcats' all-time winningest coach. "He's a great head coach. Hopefully he can give me some guidance."
Brad Bernard to be named new football coach at Edward Waters
Edward Waters College will announce the hiring of Brad Bernard as its new head football coach at a news conference today. Bernard has been offensive coordinator for Bethune-Cookman and Howard University. He also coached at two local high schools, Raines and Mandarin.
He played at and graduated from Georgia Southern where he helped lead the Eagles to the conference championship three years. He led Bethune-Cookman to two Division 1-AA playoff appearances and to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship in 2002.

B-CU Wildcats 10-0 for 1st time, clinch share of MEAC title
DAYTONA BEACH -- Few Bethune-Cookman fans likely expected to be glued to their seats at the end of Saturday's home finale. The 10th-ranked Wildcats came into the game averaging 41.8 points and facing the worst scoring defense in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (26.1 points per game).
But not until Eddie Poole returned an onside kick 37 yards for a touchdown with 1:12 left was B-CU's 35-20 victory over Howard (1-9, 0-7 MEAC) secured Saturday at Municipal Stadium. "We've been practicing that all year," said Poole, a transfer from Rutgers. "I wanted to tease them, play with them like I wasn't going for the ball."
The Wildcats improved their record to 10-0 for the first time in school history. They clinched at least a share of the conference championship, and they can win it outright next week with a victory over Florida A&M at the Florida Classic in Orlando.
Reed powers B-CU
DAYTONA BEACH -- C.J. Reed and his Bethune-Cookman University teammates nearly lived up to coach Cliff Reed's expectations Saturday night at Moore Gymnasium. Reed canned a game-high 20 points to lead four Wildcats in double figures as they blasted Edward Waters College, 85-49, in the season-opener.
"I am elated with the win to get things started right," said Cliff Reed. "I think we played hard, but I also think we played sloppy. "We were supposed to win this game, but I believe we have had better overall efforts in some of the pre-season scrimmages we have had."

NCCU Eagles earn first win for Bullock
DURHAM -- N.C. Central broke a three-game losing streak and celebrated a 20-7 homecoming victory over Edward Waters on Saturday at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium. "It was very important to win and I think it will provide great momentum going into next week," interim NCCU coach Darryl Bullock said. "We got off to a quick start, but [Edward Waters] kept fighting and it will be a real good lesson for us."
The Eagles grabbed the early lead on their second possession when they drove 46 yards in three plays for a touchdown on a 22-yard run by Tim Shankle. NCCU later added a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter to build a 20-0 lead thanks to a 47-yard pass from quarterback Michael Johnson to Geovonie Irvine and a 1-yard run by fullback Justin Manning.

NCCU quarterback Michael Johnson set the tone of the game with his first throw to Irvine who sprinted down the right side to haul in a 59-yard pass. The Eagles weren't able to score on the drive but it gave them the confidence to come back the next time they had the ball to score.

B-CU rolls up 70 points, 396 rush yards in debut
DAYTONA BEACH, FL -- Brian Jenkins' first game as Bethune-Cookman's head coach could not have played out any better had it been choreographed. Fans squeezed shoulder-to-shoulder in the home-side grandstands at Municipal Stadium to watch Jenkins' debut Saturday and were treated to B-CU rolling up 635 yards in beating undermanned Edward Waters 70-10.
It was the most points the Wildcats have ever scored in a coach's first game. And for the most part Jenkins was satisfied. "It was our first win and hopefully a sign of more to come, but we still have a lot of work to do," he said.
Jenkins chewed out his team late in the game when he felt like his players were losing their poise, and he was unhappy with his team's seven penalties, especially a personal foul and a delay-of-game call. But those are things that probably won't be remembered in the long run.

ESPNU TV crew films B-CU band -
With their hands waving in the air, hundreds of Bethune-Cookman University Marching Wildcats shake their hips in unison and repeatedly chant "How low can you go?" as they shimmy closer and closer to the ground.
In just two weeks, about 320 band students, including dancers and flag corps, have learned routines and dozens of songs leading up to their first performance Saturday at Municipal Stadium, where the football team plays Edward Waters College.
"We move at a fast pace," said Donovan Wells, director of bands at Bethune-Cookman University. For about 80 freshmen who play instruments, they first had to pass an audition. Once accepted earlier this year, they received 26 songs to learn before practice started Aug. 16. In all, the band members learn about 55 songs they perform throughout the season.

GCAC Prepares to Become Nation's 5th HBCU Conference
In a few weeks, the four HBCU conferences – the CIAA, MEAC, SIAC & SWAC – will need to make room at nation’s the table for a newcomer. The revamped Gulf Coast Athletic Conference will begin life with six historically black colleges and universities after 29 years as a mixed league. Dillard University, Edward Waters College, Fisk, Southern University-New Orleans, Tougaloo and Xavier of Louisiana will try to keep the conference alive after six former members – all predominantly white institutions -- departed for greener pastures.
When the 2009-10 athletic season finished back in June, the GCAC had 10 members. But, LSU-Shreveport left to join the Red River Athletic Conference. Belhaven, Loyola of New Orleans, Mobile, Spring Hill and William Carey joined the expanding Southern States Athletic Conference in a bid for more exposure, according to New Orleans Small College Examiner Eddie Francis. That left GCAC with just four teams – Dillard, SUNO, Tougaloo and Xavier. Ed Cassiere, Sports Information Director at Xavier, explained that the conference needed six members to keep its automatic bids to the various NAIA tournaments. Otherwise, members would have to participate in a preliminary tournament with the Association of Independent Institutions for the chance to go to the playoffs.

SSU player proposes on football field
SSU senior lineman, Roland Jackson
Savannah State University football player Roland Jackson did not have a post-game surprise after the Tigers played Edward Waters College on Saturday, but he certainly did the previous Saturday. After SSU's 23-7 homecoming victory over Concordia-Selma on Nov. 1, the senior stunned his girlfriend, Janika Davis, by proposing marriage to her on the field at T.A. Wright Stadium.
"She said yes," Jackson said, grinning. "She was really shocked."
After the game, a sweat-and-grass-covered Jackson sprinted to the locker room and showered. "I was going to (propose) in uniform, but I knew that the moment was going to get deep, and I didn't want to be hugging on her smelling like that," he said. Davis, an SSU senior from Riverdale, waited at midfield along with her family, Jackson's family and their friends.
