ECSU Vikings off to surprising 3-0 start

Elizabeth City State’s baseball team has been practicing under some difficult conditions. That is why last weekend’s season-opening three-game road swing, which produced three wins, came as a bit of a surprise to coach Terrance Whittle

The Vikings won twice at Morehouse in Atlanta on Saturday, 8-1 and 13-6, then followed that with a 10-7 win over Paine in Augusta, despite having only had three outdoor practices and not facing live pitching because of rain and winter weather.

RANDOLPH FANS NINE AS VIKINGS BEAT PAINE COLLEGE 10-7

AUGUSTA, GA-The Elizabeth City State University baseball team will return home with a perfect record intact as they downed Paine College 10-7 Sunday afternoon.

Pitcher Kerich Randolph pitched 7 innings striking out nine against on one hit.

Offensively the Vikings stayed hot with four different players going 2-4 on the afternoon. Tony Wiggins and Clifton Taylor both tallied two singles each while Phillip Dodson finished with a double and a single. Kyle Meads, who hit a three-run homer in the Vikings' opener against Morehouse, hit a triple and a double on the afternoon

VIKINGS SWEEP MOREHOUSE WITH 13-6 WIN IN GAME TWO OF DOUBLEHEADER

ATLANTA, GA- Elizabeth City State University Vikings completed a doubleheader sweep of Morehouse College downing the Maroon Tigers 13-6 in game two on Saturday afternoon.

Weston Dodson collected his three RBI on a three run homer while Hasten Simmons and Khatim Butler both added 2 RBI apiece in the seven run victory. Freshman Cameron Cecil, who was relieved by Hertford, NC native Brad Miller, pitched four shut-out inning in his first appearance.

Harris: Does anyone care about Elizabeth City State's Michael Bonner?

Harris: Does anyone care about Michael Bonner?

At one end of the basketball court in the R.L. Vaughan Center are team photos for the Elizabeth City State teams. In the men’s basketball picture, one of the biggest smiles belongs to Perquimans graduate Michael Bonner. Although he didn’t know it then, it was the only time Bonner would put on an ECSU uniform.

Since then, Bonner has been getting a raw deal. And that is about as nice as I can put it and get it past my editors.

He should be playing with the Vikings and contributing as they make a run in the final weeks of the season. Instead, Bonner is watching the games from the stands. Always with a smile on his face...

NOTE TO VIKINGS AND HBCU FANS:

Please pass the link to this story "Harris: Does anyone care about Michael Bonner?" on to your friends and let us all assist this deserving student-athlete in receiving a fair decision from CIAA Commissioner Leon G. Kerry.

ECSU beat writer Will Harris of the Daily Advance Newspaper is on point -- that student Michael Bonner has received a raw deal from the professionals that he and his family trusted to provide the proper guidance for both his academic and athletic careers. Why should he suffer for their incompetency?

Will you help by bringing political pressure on the CIAA Commissioner's Office to provide Mr. Michael Bonner with a quick waiver of this silly two-year rule, that should not be applied to the Winston Salem State University situation? Please express your support and ask the Commissioner to render a decision, now, that is long overdue to Mr. Bonner and his family.

ECSU’s Jenkins first team All-America

Elizabeth City State defensive end Malcolm Jenkins was named to the first team Daktronics All-America team on Tuesday, becoming just the second Viking to be named to the Division II honor squad. Defensive back Howard Williams is the only other ECSU player to make the team. He was selected in 2004.

In the preseason, Jenkins was named to the Lindy’s All-America team and did not disappoint throughout the season.

Jenkins CIAA’s top defender

Just one Elizabeth City State football player made the All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association first team, but it was big one. Defensive end Malcolm Jenkins not only made the first team for the second year in a row, but he was also named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year.

“Malcolm did a lot of things good,” ECSU coach Waverly Tillar said. “He’s consistent most every game out and he gave the offenses we faced a fit.”

Jenkins led the CIAA in sacks with 13 and tackles for loss with 18.5. The senior from Florence, N.J., led the Vikings with 27 quarterback hurries and was third on the team with 42 tackles.

Injuries will affect ECSU Vikings' start

Elizabeth City State’s men’s basketball team is in late-season form, but not in a good way. The Vikings are suffering from a multitude of nagging injuries, have lost one player for the year and another will miss at least half the season, if he comes back at all.

“The health of our team right now is not good,” said ECSU coach Shawn Walker, whose team opens the season tonight against Barton.

Barton teams face road tests this weekend

Health issues continue to be a major concern for the men's and women's basketball teams of Barton College as they head into play this weekend on the road. The Bulldogs take on host Elizabeth City State tonight at 8 in the first day of the ECSU Basketball Tip-Off Classic, and then face St. Augustine's at 5 p.m. Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs visit Fayetteville State on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Barton men opened their season with a hard-fought 90-80 win at Chowan University on Tuesday night and now the Conference Carolinas Bulldogs will face two more Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association teams. The ECSU Vikings, who will be playing their season opener, were picked to win the CIAA Northern Division while the Falcons (1-0) edged ECSU for the CIAA crown last February.

Injuries hit Vikings hard

Elizabeth City State’s men’s basketball team’s 74-41 exhibition loss by to Old Dominion on Saturday may have been more notable for those Vikings not on the court.

Missing in action were senior guard Trent Bivens, junior forward C.J. Wright and sophomore guard Michael Bonner. Wright has an ACL tear and could miss the season, while Bivens and Bonner are expected to be ready for the season opener on Nov. 19. Camden native Ricky Krainiak, who transferred to ECSU after one season at Campbell, will also be redshirt...

Chowan arrives as a spoiler

While the door remains cracked, Elizabeth City State feels like it was slammed in its face last week. The Vikings rolled up 507 yards of offense, yet managed just two touchdowns in a 20-12 loss at Bowie State to all but end their hopes of a trip to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship game.

It was ECSU’s second loss in a row, leaving the Vikings a game down in the loss column to both Virginia State and Bowie State with two games remaining.

Follow Chowan at Elizabeth City State on Saturday

ELIZABETH CITY, NC - Chowan University football fans can follow Saturday's game at Elizabeth City State University by logging onto GAME DAY CENTRAL on the Hawks' athletic website. Powell back at quarterback for ECSU

Elizabeth City State got some good new this week when starting quarterback Creven Powell was given medical clearance to play. The Vikings will need him and a little luck as they chase a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship, beginning with today’s game at Bowie State.

Elizabeth City State’s Air Viking I arrives

Elizabeth City State University’s aviation program was flying high Friday, as university and local officials celebrated the arrival of the program’s newest airplane.

ECSU linemen many miles from home

Homecoming means different things to different people, but for at least three Elizabeth City State football players, this weekend’s homecoming festivities will be spent about as far away from home as you can get.

Baron Coffin, Sanerivi Reupena and Kahawaiolaa Soon share a background that is a far cry from northeast North Carolina. All three are junior offensive linemen from California junior colleges, which is how they arrived in Elizabeth City. But their Polynesian heritage sets them apart. Coffin hails from American Samoa, Soon is from Hawaii and Reupena was born in California, but his parents are native Samoans.

BSU Bulldogs Win on Senior Day, 20-12 over ECSU

The Bowie State Bulldogs (5-4 overall, 5-1 CIAA) on Senior day found a way despite giving up 500 yards in total offense and not scoring in the second half to defeat Elizabeth State (4-4 overall, 3-2 CIAA), 20-12. The win gives the Bulldogs a fighting chance of earning a CIAA championship birth with two weeks remaining in the season.

"The guys played for the seniors today and they played a good game," said coach Damon Wilson. "This is a good Elizabeth City team." "The guys fought for four quarters and found a way to win the ballgame, so it was great to finish our home stretch with a W."

The Bulldogs won the game because of three things: on offense, they were efficient and ran the ball successfully; on defense, they were able to create three turnovers when Elizabeth City was within a yard of the end zone; and finally, special teams was fantastic creating two touchdowns.

Virginia State Trojans take over first in CIAA North

ETTRICK, VA -- Daronte McNeill took Elizabeth City as far as he could, but it was a balanced Virginia State attack that prevailed 15-10 last night. Playing on just five days rest, the Trojans went with a wildcat offense that spread the carries around, then let sophomore quarterback Jarred Battle finish the job.

The Vikings had McNeill, who nearly completed a second-half comeback, but his mud-stained jersey showed just how heavy the team rode its workhorse back. Unlike VSU, McNeill had no quarterback to lean on -- sophomore Namon Jones threw three interceptions in his first collegiate start.

Trojans hold off Vikings 15-10

ETTRICK, VA - The spotlight suits the Virginia State University football team. The Trojans played host to the CBS Division II game of the week and were seemingly unphased by the national audience. They jumped out to a first-half lead and held on to beat visiting Elizabeth City State University 15-10 on Thursday in a CIAA North Division game.

After fumbling on its first possession and punting on its second, Virginia State performed the football equivalent of batting for the cycle. The Trojans scored in every possible way - tallying a touchdown, two field goals and a safety en route to a 15-3 lead.

Virginia State defeats ECSU

Elizabeth City State’s football team’s motto this season is “Seal the Deal.” On Saturday, the Vikings had several chances to seal the game and ultimately had to turn to a handful of backups to secure a 17-14 win over Virginia Union.

The Vikings (4-2, 3-0) are in the same position and cannot afford a loss at Virginia State (4-2, 2-1) when the two teams meet tonight in a nationally televised contest.

VUU Donaldson Reaches 2,000 Yard Plateau

Virginia Union University's Tarian Donaldson rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown, but Elizabeth City State University downed VUU 17-14 in Elizabeth City, N.C., on October 9.

Donaldson became only the third Panther in the last 10 years to reach the 2,000-yard plateau in his career. The senior running back from Virginia Beach, VA, now has 2,022 career yards. Andre Braxton and Elihu Smith are the other Panthers to rush for more than 2,000 yards in their careers during the last decade.

New chancellor's box boost to ECSU plans

Fans at Roebuck Stadium Saturday noticed a new structure on the home side. A new chancellor’s suite was installed last week and will remain in place for Elizabeth City State’s final two home games. The building is a temporary structure that filled an immediate need Vikings’ officials saw.

There was some buzz around the Elizabeth City State University Foundation Classic charity golf tournament at The Pines at Elizabeth City Friday. An NFL Hall-of-Famer was on the course.

Bruce Smith, who left pro football as the all-time sacks leader after a 19-year career with the Buffalo Bills and Washington Redskins, was playing in a foursome that included Foundation board chairman Rodney Hawkins, legendary ECSU basketball coach Bobby Vaughan and businessman Nick Clark.

Fayetteville State fails to capitalize on early lead

Rocky Mount, N.C. - Fayetteville State was given every chance to put away Elizabeth City State during the first half of the Down East Viking Football Classic on Saturday at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex. But as time continued to tick off the clock and a partisan Elizabeth City State crowd grew restless with some poor play by the Vikings early, hope emerged.

It came in the form of a defense that didn’t let things get out of hand, and when Elizabeth City State’s special teams caught a break, momentum followed in its favor. “We had a few stumbles and falls, but we picked it back up, and that’s what we needed to do,” Elizabeth City State wide receiver Dexter Manley said after his team rallied for a 38-26 victory in the 13th edition of the Classic.

ECSU Vikings travel for 13th Down East Classic

Packing up a football team and traveling 100 miles to play a home game might seem like a pitfall of distractions, but for the Elizabeth City State Vikings, this weekend is a familiar process.

Today’s Down East Viking Football Classic in Rocky Mount has grown into a second homecoming of sorts for ECSU. The weekend is full of parties, banquets and a football game to cap everything off. This year’s game, the 13th year of the event, pits ECSU (1-1) against fellow Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association member Fayetteville State (1-1), although this does not count as a league game. With all that surrounds the game, the Vikings are somewhat insulated from it, according to coach Waverly Tillar.

Down East Classic game features two programs on the rise

When Elizabeth City State plays host to Fayetteville State in the 13th annual Down East Viking Football Classic at 4 p.m.today at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex, the two teams will showcase more than an intrastate rivalry. Both the Vikings and the Broncos are Division II programs on the rise, especially visiting Fayetteville State, which finished last season seventh in the Super Regional 1 rankings.

ECSU Vikings' Jenkins an All-America

When Malcolm Jenkins arrived at Elizabeth City State as a freshman, coaches threw him No. 71. He took that as a slight. Wearing an offensive lineman’s number was unfitting for a defensive end. Now a senior, Jenkins’ No. 92 is a number Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association quarterbacks fear most.

“They didn’t even expect me to play.” Jenkins recalled of his freshman season. “They probably wanted me on special teams or redshirt and sit out a year. I had this big jersey on, an O-lineman jersey. I took it as a sign of disrespect, like they think I’m not going do anything, so...

Elizabeth City State Vikings' Powell was ready, able

It was not that long ago that Elizabeth City State’s football team struggled for wins. The turnaround occurred in 2006 when Curtis Rich emerged from a crowded quarterback corps to lead the Vikings to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship game and head coach Waverly Tillar made a commitment to solidifying the position.

The next season, with Rich entrenched, Tillar recruited Pasquotank’s Creven Powell, convincing him to come to ECSU over offers from Norfolk State and North Carolina A&T, and the rest, as they say, was history. “I told the coaches after the 2006 football season, I don’t ever want to have another quarterback situation where we played musical chairs with quarterback and not having the type of quarterback to move this offense,” Tillar said.

Central Arkansas 47, Elizabeth City State Vikings 20

Conway, AR - University of Central Arkansas wide receiver Kenneth Robey, a cameo guy at best last season, became a star Thursday night. Robey, a 5-foot-9 receiver who had no career receptions, caught nine passes for 151 yards and three touchdowns in putting the Bears on the upside in a real roller-coaster ride of a 47-20 victory over Elizabeth City State before 9,121 at First Security Field at Estes Stadium.

Robey caught touchdown passes from both starting quarterback Nathan Dick and backup Wynrick Smothers. Nathan Dick rolled up Nathan Brown-type statistics the first half, completing 21 of 26 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns in leading UCA to a 27-14 lead at the half. He finished 26 of 35 for 351 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 32 more yards.

Robey caught passes of 10 and 63 yards from Dick and nine on a rollout pass from Smothers, who set up a key touchdown with a 16-yard run. Nine different receivers caught passes for the Bears.

ECSU Vikings takes opener over JCSU 45-27

ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Elizabeth City State held off an upstart Johnson C. Smith football squad for a 45-27 win in their season opener at Roebuck Stadium Saturday evening.

After holding a 24-7 lead at the intermission, the Golden Bulls seized the momentum in the second half reeling off 14 unanswered points via two touchdown tosses from Golden Bull quarterback Ryan Carter. The Vikings got some much needed breathing room on the Golden Bulls' next drive when an errant Carter pass was picked off and returned 33 yards for a score by Devon Price with and 3:40 remaining in the third quarter the Vikings led by ten, 31-21.

ECSU extended their lead in the fourth quarter when Cedric Blacknall's first of two rushing scores capped an 11 play, 82 yard drive with 12:29 left in the contest. JCSU (0-1, CIAA 0-1) broke the scoring plane again on a 3-yard touchdown run by Archie Barrow at the 7:32 mark. However all hopes of a late comeback were dash when Billy Wiggins returned the ensuing kickoff 65 yards to the Golden Bull 30 yard line, setting up a 3 play drive which Blacknall finished with his second 3-yard TD of the evening for the final point spread.

This could be the year for ECSU

Elizabeth City State’s football team has come so tantalizingly close. In 2006, a last-second, 51-yard field goal sank the Vikings in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship game. In 2008, ECSU was thumped by a very talented Shaw team in the league title game. Last year, a coin flip cost the Vikings a third trip in four years to the CIAA finale.

After all of that, ECSU coach Waverly Tillar thinks this might finally be the year.

“I think we went out this year from a recruiting standpoint and got the pieces we need,” Tillar said. “When I say ‘the pieces,’ I mean the quality depth. Last year, our Achilles heel was midseason, we got banged up and we didn’t have quality guys to come in a keep it going. We have it going on this year. I feel the games we’ll win will be in the trenches.”

Elizabeth City State Vikings' Manley back for final season

ECSU Manley,#5 averages an insane 23.9 yards per catch over his career.

NFL scouts are already familiar with Elizabeth City State wide receiver Dexter Manley. In fact, most thought he was a senior and would be coming out for 2010 draft, but it turned out Manley had one more year of college eligibility left. Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association foes wish he had left. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Manley, now really a senior, leads an explosive Vikings offense that averaged 32.5 points per game in 2009.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to coach guys that were athletic and I’ve been fortunate enough to coach guys that were smart football players. He is the rare combination of both,” ECSU offensive coordinator Alvin Parker said. “He knows what’s going on totally with our scheme and he’s athletic enough to make any play out there on the field.”

Incoming ... Bonner comes to ECSU

Elizabeth City State’s basketball team is starting to look like an Atlantic Conference all-star team. Perquimans’ Michael Bonner is the latest former star of the 1A conference, now known as the Four Rivers, to join the Vikings, transferring from Winston-Salem State. Earlier this year, former Camden star Ricky Krainiak transferred to ECSU from Campbell, joining last year’s Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Rookie of the Year Angelo Sharpless of Plymouth.

Being close to home and the presence of Sharpless and Krainiak influenced Bonner’s choice of schools. “ECSU is a very good place,” said Bonner, the 2007-08 Daily Advance Player of the Year. “Coach (Shawn) Walker is a really cool guy and from what I hear, he is an excellent coach. Angelo Sharpless, I played with him in high school. Ricky Krainiak, I played with him in high school. We all have that bond already. It’s a beautiful school and my family is around here and my church is around here.”

After Bonner experienced a rough freshman season, Winston-Salem coaches decided to redshirt the 6-foot-5, 190-pound guard last season, a choice that confused the Hertford native.

Pitts, Sweat to join Sports Hall of Fame

Daily Press

Richard "Pop" Pitts, a fixture in Peninsula District athletics for three decades and a standout basketball player at Norfolk State in the 1960s, is part of the 2007 induction class in the Hampton Roads African-American Sports Hall of Fame.

Pitts is joined by LaVerne Sweat, longtime track coach at Norfolk State and Hampton University, former Elizabeth City State basketball star Marvin Trotman, basketball and track standout Walter Green, and boxing instructor and trainer Earnest Green.

"It's probably the greatest honor that I've ever had," Pitts said. "For being out of college athletics for 40 years and to still be recognized as a good player is very satisfying."

Pitts, a Norfolk native, starred at Norfolk State in the mid-'60s. He earned All-CIAA regular season and tournament as a junior and senior. He averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds per game as a junior and 25.8 points and 12 rebounds per game as a senior.

Pitts coached and taught at Peninsula Catholic from 1970-75, helping implement many of the school's athletic programs. After a year away from education, he went to Menchville High, where he served as coach and administrator from 1976-2004.

He coached basketball for the Monarchs from 1976-89 and served as athletic director from 1990 until his retirement.

He is also well-known in track and field circles. His presence and booming voice made him an institution as a starter and event official for years at track meets.

"I know that they put six (inductees) in per year," Pitts said. "When you look at all the athletes that have come from this area, it can take years to get recognized. I wasn't a flashy player, and people tend to notice flashy players. I was more of a blue-collar worker. To get inducted in the 10th class is quite an honor, considering it could have taken a lot longer."

Sweat coached at both Hampton and Norfolk State. She was track coach at Norfolk State from 1988-2005 and retired as senior women's administrator in 2006. Her teams won numerous CIAA and later Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference titles.

She was an assistant coach with the U.S. Olympic track team in Sydney in 2000. She also was head coach of the U.S. team at the World University Games in Romania in 1981 and the Junior Pan Am Games in Canada in 1993.

The HRAASHF induction banquet will be held Nov. 3 at the Norfolk Sheraton Waterside. Tickets are $70 and can be reserved by calling Yvette Todd at 404-1775 or at the Hall's Web site: www.hraashf.org.
